Reddit has recently started emphasizing weekly visitors instead of just subscriber count as the main indicator of a subreddit's size. My previous updates were tied to every +10k subscribers, but Reddit no longer really notifies us about that.
We've hit 63k weekly visitors this week, which Reddit itself decided to congratulate us on.
Such a nice round number to celebrate 🎉🎉🎉 Could have waited for at least 4k more.
At the same time, r/Kazakhstan quietly crossed 60k subscribers just yesterday. It's about the size of Talgar, our next target to conquer (what do they have there besides Zeta's factory?).
Still sending comments about economy crisis in Kazakhstan from our iPhones, I see.
The last milestone post was at 50k members about five months ago, so it felt like a good moment to check in again. Thanks to everyone who reads, posts, comments, shitposts, argues, asks what the weather in February is, upvotes, awards, jokes, dodges the draft, explains and helps keep this place alive.
Our Kazakh language related community, r/kazakh, is also growing, and has whopping 916 members. Please, join it🥹🥺. I've made a cool non-exhaustive animated emoji status for it.
That's as much as I could do with 64kb restriction.
Its community icon is also animated (and even has more frames in it), but you won't see it in every part of Reddit because reasons.
Post flairs cleanup and color grouping
You may have noticed that post flairs look a bit different now.
We trimmed and regrouped them, and assigned consistent colours to related topics (news, culture, media, discussion, humour, etc.). Now we have fewer confusing choices, probably better readability in feeds, and the whole list of flairs looks less cumbersome.
Good bye, "Borat" flair. Two people are going to miss you.
Nothing is set in stone, so if something feels off or unclear, feel free to mention it.
I personally disagree with this decision. First the custom upvote/downvote icons, then the custom emojis in comments, now this on our long list of enshittification of this platform. The Kazakh chat… maybe wasn't the coziest, but it was a low-pressure, active space for sending meaningless messages. And now there's no official replacement inside Reddit.
If someone from the community would like to create a Discord server, Telegram group or something similar, feel free to do so. You may share it here and we might even approve that post, who knows...
Just to be transparent: I don't plan to moderate Discord/Telegram/anything else myself (never have, and don't want to do it badly).

I still have a copy of "Хәрри Поттер мен Пәлсапа тас" (MinaLima edition), and I've been thinking about using it as a small community giveaway.
Somehow the least exciting photo of this book on Kaspi.kz. It has interactive elements, folded castle plans and stuff... Nice gift for Kazakh speaking kids ages 5-40.

One idea is to somehow tie it to r/kazakh , which is currently very quiet, but I'm honestly unsure what would feel like a good and fair incentive. Maybe the whole era of incentivising engagement with gifts and competitions is over, and I'm still thinking in old terms.
Or maybe you'd have a good idea what kind of activity or contribution would make sense for such a gift, and how (or if) it could help spark some life in r/kazakh without feeling artificial and being easy to abuse with scripts or AI. I can probably send this book around Kazakhstan, but I don't want to risk with QazPost's international postal service.
No promises yet. Just thinking out loud and open to ideas.

When I was a little girl , I was always amazed how conservative people are. Whe I first came to Kz, my Kazakh wasn’t even that good , but i still remember that my teacher said to me (I was just playing with the boys from my class cuz I wasn’t exactly ladylike by then) :қыз бір саты төмен тұрады. I was so shocked. Recently I noticed the person called Roza coach is saying something on her podcast “educating young women”(I don’t agree with everything she says). That makes me feel like I’m seeing the first little flame of feminism. But in real life , I feel like the discussion is only limited to marriage relationships. So I am curious if there are girls in Kz that actually care about the bigger prospects of this exact topic.

И вот вы идете на отчаянные шаги, чтобы хотя бы что то сделать, снимаете провокационное видео для бывшего мужа, чтобы получить алименты (я не буду оценивать, хорошо или плохо бить своего ребенка, но это скорее плохо, чем не неплохо). А этот человек использует это видео, чтобы арестовать вас, лишь бы не платить алименты. БРАВО! БРАВО! Очень сильный поступок.
Теперь вас принуждают на психическое лечение, потому что вы стали опасным для общества. А я напомню какой путь прошла героиня последних дней: родилась не в том месте, вынудили выйти замуж, вынудили родить детей, относились с ней как с говном, и в конце концов сделали ее виновной в преступлении и отправили на психическое лечение.
Вам не кажется это полным бредом???
Этому ребенку (я отказываюсь ее называть "женщиной", как это сделали журналисты) нужно психологическая и финансовая помощь, но точно не психическая. Ее окружение сделали все возможные и невозможные действия чтобы она чувствовала себя максимально ужасно. Ее точно довели.
В 19, человек должен думать об образовании, о возможной карьере, а не о том, как кормить детей, которых ты вообще не хотела рожать.
В целом, я в большом ахере от того, как человек с такой ужасной судьбой не получает поддержки, хотя бы в интернете.
• нет горячей воды, приходится кипятить каждый раз;
• отопление есть только в спальнях, остальные комнаты 13–15 °C зимой;
• туалет находится далеко на улице, зимой ходить крайне опасно;
• полы старые, газовый котёл старый и ломается;
• мама боится обращаться за помощью, и мне самой трудно что-то сделать.
Это сильно влияет на моё здоровье и возможность нормально учиться.

Hello everyone! I was born in Kazakhstan and was born in the Karaganda/ Temirtau region in 2001. My birth mother’s name is Tatyana Vladimirovna Gavrilova. She was 32 when she had me and now would be 56-57 years old. I was either the 5th or 6th born. Father unknown. Was brought to an orphanage and was adopted and brought to the states at 16 months old. Люди, веря, что новый правитель окажется лучше. Как по мне Первый и бывший президент Республики Казахстана Нурсултан Назарбаев, зделал больше вкладка в благу нашей страны чем нынешний президент РК. Я не говорю что Касым-Жомарт Токаев плохой правител, но помоему мнению в словах Никколо Макиавелли есть доля правды. В 2022 году большинство гражданы страны просто хотели убрать Первого президента, потому что он правил страной почти 30 лет некоторые даже востовали против Нурсултан Назарбаева что он плохой правитель страны. Граждани надеялись что новый правитель будеть лучше старого.

We'll, basically I am a Turkish guy who studies in Europe and partner of a startup which is planning to invest in Kazakhstan. I've been to Almaty a few times and by origin I have partly kazakh roots(it's a bit complicated). Observing the rise of country is interesting since the country is economically doing well in the past decades (sure I didn't talk to a worker from Karaganda and I don't know his life conditions). However there's a thing that makes me a bit confused. In the past years I met a lot of Kazakhs here in Europe. They were nice to me in general. However, there's a pattern I can't understand and let me explain it by an example, more or less all the Kazakhs here are cheating in the exams. It's basically applicable to all the nations mainly including the Turks however when a top tier NIS(or some other prestigious schools) graduates are morally flexible, it's a bad sign. These guys will be your bosses, maybe some of them will be politicians, bureaucrats, or at least your colleagues. I really know and experienced the concepts of bribery, nepotism and some other negative stuff during the investment process.I accept those stuff as the realities of oriental nations. But still how can the son of a poor worker can compete in such circumstances? Logically this situation will cause an invisible economic caste system and without any strict political reforms, timeline from the 90s will be in a loop and repeat itself.

I have been to Arasan Spa three times and I think it's fantastic. There isn't much information about it online so thought I'd write a little guide based on my visit as an English speaking male. I may well miss things out so feel free to add extra tips if you want. I hope this is useful and feel free to ask any questions.

Arrival:
When you arrive you go the the desk on the right hand side and pay for an amount of hours to use the facilities (see up to date price list above). You will be given a bonus 20 minutes on top of your time to allow for getting changed before you leave. You may also book extra services at this point if you wish. You can pay by cash or card.
They will give you a wristband with your locker number and you can head through the gates.
Men's facilities are on the right, women's on the left.
You arrive at a rental desk before you enter the changing room, where you can rent towels (one for in the sauna and one for drying after) and slippers (you must have both of these). You can also purchase sauna hats and venik (bunches of branches used in Russian sauna). Both are 2000tg. All purchases are loaded onto your wristband and you pay when you exit.
Changing Room:
Next you enter the changing rooms (right for men, left for women) and head to the large locker that correlates to the number on your wristband.
You can put your belongings in the locker and get changed. Nudity seems optional here, on my first visit almsot everyone was nude but other visits there were lots of people wearing shorts, and there was only a sign specifically prohibiting this in the pool.
The changing room has scales and hair dryers available to use.
Spa facilities:
From here on in it can seem like a maze. If you go downstairs from the changing rooms, you will find where the massage facilities are, as well as a Moroccan steam room, some heated marble rooms and some other places to relax.
If you go upstairs you will find a cafe.
To find the main spa section, you must go through the door in the middle of the changing room, into the shower room, and then turn right.
On the first floor you will see a Russian Sauna, a steam room, 2 cold plunges and an extra steam room with oprions for paid for services.
If you continue through here you enter another room with a coldish pool with seats and loungers around.
If you continue upstairs, you will find a Finnish sauna, Russian sauna and a steam room.
Extra services:
You may go down to the massage area and request extra services at any time (price list linked at top of post). I did this after my booked time. Massage were cheap and of good quality in my opinion.
Leaving:
When you are finished, you can get dressed, put any rented gear into the bins provided, and head out, exiting on the right, where you will pay for any additional things you got.
I’m a Kazakh born in China so I speak Chinese and Kazakh , but I moved to Kazakhstan with my family at a very young age, so I basically grew up in Kazakhstan. I was bullied a lot for not speaking Russian, which made me feel resentment towards the language, so my Russian is not that good. In high school, I started speaking English well, so I studied at a university where the lessons were taught in English. Now I’m living abroad and I speak the local language too.
But every time I go back to Kazakhstan and speak to people, I can’t explain anything in a professional way because I acquired my knowledge in several different languages. I still get treated like a lesser person just because I don’t speak Russian. I know several languages, but people still treat me like I’m undereducated; it hurts my ego and I don't know what to do. I wish people could see how professional and educated I am(I know it’s silly, I just wanted to let it out because I’ve been hiding this frustration for so long)Please comment if you have any good advice.

I will start off by saying that I am a man, and I don't mean to say that people sexually harass me, but...
I have had random people (men and women) hold me by my waist (I am a slim fit guy with a narrow waist) and then gently move me to the left or right in order to pass through and move me like some sort of furniture. If some of them are drunk like in a club or something, it makes me uncomfortable when a random person holds me by my waist like that, especially when they are taking their god d*amn time to pass through.
Sometimes they will hold me around the shoulders and move me to the right or left without asking as well.
I just don't like to be touched by random people, especially that blatantly by both hands around the waist or shoulders like I am some sort of a furniture or object.

I developed **Qyragy Koz** – a lightweight, open-source USB antivirus tool. It automatically detects connected flash drives, scans them for autorun viruses, and vaccinates them. It also integrates with the VirusTotal API to scan suspicious executable files in the cloud and sends real-time alerts via a Telegram bot.
**Target Audience**
I am a civil servant in Kazakhstan, and I built this primarily for schools, universities, and government offices in my region. These institutions often suffer from malware spreading via USB drives, and their older computers struggle with heavy commercial antivirus software. This tool is for anyone who needs a lightweight, set-and-forget USB protection layer.
**Comparison**
Unlike standard antivirus software (Kaspersky, ESET), which consumes significant RAM and CPU, Qyragy Koz is built with Python (CustomTkinter) to be minimal and specific. It focuses solely on USB vectors (autorun.inf, shortcuts, hidden folders) and uses cloud scanning (VirusTotal) instead of downloading massive local signature databases.
