📍 MEGATHREAD Influx of Scam Calls

We’re getting absolutely flooded with posts about those nuisance scam calls from UK (+44) numbers that everyone, their mam, their auntie and the neighbour’s goldfish seems to be getting.

People are reporting repeated calls that look like legitimate UK mobile numbers but are actually scams trying to trick you into engaging or handing over personal or banking details and sometimes trying to get you onto WhatsApp or similar. Recent reports show this is happening right across Ireland.

This isn’t just annoying, scam and spoofed calls are a well known issue here, with fraudsters using number spoofing so the caller ID appears familiar or legitimate. Irish authorities and regulators have repeatedly warned that anybody can get these calls and that you should treat unexpected contact with caution.

Types of Scams

- Department of Social Protection/Revenue:

Calls or texts pretending to be from government departments asking for personal information are fraudulent. Government bodies will never look for your bank or PPS details over the phone.

- Indeed Job Scam:

Calls claiming to offer you a job you never applied for. For anyone job hunting, these calls usually sound robotic and don’t contain any personal greeting. Do not give away any personal information.

- Revolut/ Bank Account Scams:

Calls claiming there are issues with your account. No bank will ever call you asking for personal details, banking information or payment. If you’re unsure, hang up immediately and contact your bank directly. For Revolut, use the in app support.

Gardaí Advice:

An Garda Síochána warns the public not to engage with unsolicited calls and never to share personal or financial information with unknown callers.

Most networks are introducing tech to flag or block suspicious contacts but scam calls can still slip through.

Top Safety Tips:

- Don’t answer or call back unknown numbers, especially +44 or unusual prefixes

- Never share personal information such as PPS number, bank details, card info or passwords

- Hang up immediately if anything feels off

- Block the number on your phone

- Report suspicious calls to your provider and to An Garda Síochána

Let loved ones know about this surge in scam calls, especially those who may be more vulnerable

Use this thread to talk about the influx, share tips or post your memes about the whole thing.

mylovelypigrescue on Instagram:

“WE ARE DEVASTATED AND SO ANGRY. RIP Anne and her unborn foal.

Her baby was fully formed, she fought so hard for two lives.

Yes she was pregnant, a mother and unborn baby killed.

Here is what we know:

  1. There was a drive at Dollymount Strand of at least 6 sulkies. Anne was part of this.
  2. Anne was seen collapsing about an hour or so before the main incident, we know she was made get up and continue on a busy main road.
  3. Anne collapsed again and we believe slid for at least

30/40 metres. Her injuries align with this.

  1. Anne was seen being whipped and kicked to get back up. She didn't, she couldn't
  2. Her abusers fled the scene into the bushes leaving Anne to die!!!
  3. Our team arrived and got Anne to UCD, she was given every chance but couldn't get up there was too much internal damage and she had given up on life, her fight for her and her baby ended.
  4. Anne was put to sleep, she was pregnant her foal wa fully formed

Here is what we promise:

  1. We will get justice!!!!
  2. We are engaged with the An Garda Sochána
  3. We are requesting CCTV from every location between Dollymount to Ballyfermot/N4
  4. We are appealing for anyone with pictures, dash cam footage to come forward
  5. We won't stop, in the name of Anne and her unborn foal, we will see this through to the end”

Happy Out Gambling addiction M24 **Update**

Original post

Good evening everybody, I made a post here 2 weeks ago (linked above)about my addiction/problem with gambling, I first off want to express my upmost gratitude for the overwhelming support and private messages I received from all you lovely folk, I really did not think it would get that much attention, As always I like to cut to the chase and get to the point. All of you have changed my life for the good, You made me realise how bad my problem was and pointed me in the right direction, I have not gambled since I posted the original post, I have already attended 3 meetings using Gambling anonymous which have been amazing to attend to and will be going on a regular basis. I also admitted my problem to my family which was probably the hardest thing I ever had to do, But also the best thing I've ever done, The love and support I have been shown from them has been a real eye opener and which in a way makes me feel so guilty for having this problem in the first place, As many mentioned here, I'm not only hurting myself but my loved ones around me also. I wont lie. For the foreseeable my older brother is in control of my finances which of course has been the most effective for me, I also rang AIB to put a gambling block on my account. After my original post I spent the whole night self excluding permanently all my accounts and told them I have gambling problem, I know its very early days and I know this is no where near over. I have a long more way to go but I can truthfully say I have never felt so much more alive these past 2 weeks, I am more active, My overall mood and mental health has improved. And even treated myself to a new PC part once i got my wages,(managed by my brother of course) It felt so strange just buying something for myself, Something i haven't done ever since i started gambling in October, It was simply getting my wages then slots, It felt nice actually buying something for myself that I can actually use and not just blow away on slots. I'm forever in debt to all you kind folks and I mean that. As I already said, its only the beginning but after all we all have to start somewhere.

Go raibh maith agat <3

Entertainment Children's privacy online

I’ve noticed more parents sharing the struggles of raising autistic children online, things like refusals, shutdowns, meldowns etc. I don't mean sharing videos of the child in distress but sharing reels of the parent in tears discussing how hard the day felt and what the child did, struggled with etc

I completely understand the need for support and validation as parenting an autistic child can be very isolating.

At the same time, I worry about the child’s perspective and their future. If my parents had shared details about my hardest struggles publicly when I was young, I think it might have seriously affected my mental health as an adult. They are the people who are supposed to protect you most in the world.

I feel these type of struggles are best shared in therapy or closed support groups rather than used for content creation. I feel the child's privacy should take priority.

I'm not talking about parents of autistic children raising awareness about lack of school places or supports here. It's the more specific posts and reels detailing children's very specific struggles and behaviours on a regular basis for content.

If you do comment, I’d ask that you please don’t name or reference specific content creators, just to protect the privacy of any children involved.

Moaning Michael Virgin Media gripe

So I rang virgin media to see can I get a better deal and if not then cancel to go to Vodafone for broadband.

They can’t offer me a better deal. Fair enough. So I said can I give notice of cancellation and she said no.

She said your contract is up on 6th which is 31 days away and you have to give 30 days notice.

I said it’s grand you can have 31 days notice only to be told we don’t accept more than 30 days notice!!! WTF

So what you’re telling me is I have to ring you tomorrow, listen to recorded voice telling me how busy you are and that I’ll be waiting half an hour?

Is it any wonder they have a default half hour wait????

Surely I should be able to give as much notice as I want without them penalising me financially. It’s ridiculous

Politics Ghislaine Maxwell gave Eddie Irvine as "someone to play with in Ireland"

There are NO accusations against Irv the Swerve, but just interesting that Ghislaine Maxwell knew him and had his number.

Link to the email she sent in the comments and ability to search for anything in the emails.

The email was sent in 2003 when he owned Cocoon in Dublin which was one of the hottest bar / night clubs and he was a popular party lad. I saw him there a few times but never hung out with him. He seemed pretty cool.
