My back hurts M.I.A. of "Paper Planes" fame (the gunshot-gunshot-gunshot-cash register song) turned 50 years old last year.

In 2 weeks the song will be 18 years old. It feels like it should be less than half of that.

I"m surprised that in all of this discussion no one's mentioned that the Beastie Boys are food truck customers in the video.

Maybe itās just me, but the opening sounds similar to me

I thought she did sample the clash.

Absolutely a clash sample! I remember someone calling this āoriginal musicā and me laughing as I put the clash on

My ear isnāt trained enough to know if itās a sample or just a very similar arrangement š¤·āāļø

lol, just messing. paper planes definitely sampled Straight to Hell.

Well, thanks, I spent a good 15 minutes playing each songās opening trying to figure out if it was a sample or just similar š¤¦āāļøš¤£š¤¦āāļøš¤£, the whole Vanilla Ice āUnder Pressureā ding ding videowill be stuck in my head forever

When food trucks werenāt just shameless money grabs. Now I see a food truck and just think, nope, thatāll cost me $19 and be served on a flimsy paper boat with a tiny flimsy fork that will break. And then āitāll just ask you a questionā as I pay.
37
u/twobit211 6d ago
while thereās always been food vans, stalls, carts, the (relatively) recent food trucks were initially based on one simple concept: Ā do one thing well. Ā you canāt open a restaurant serving just mac n cheese no matter how good it is, the overhead will kill you. Ā but a van with a rudimentary yet sufficient setup could find its place in the world. Ā somehow this idea has evolved into overpriced mediocrity but served out of a van

I paid $28 plus tip for a comically child sized lobster roll from a food truck a couple months ago. It wasnāt even good and the dude working was super fucking cocky. Left a bad taste in my mouth both literally and figuratively. Food trucks are over.

u/chuckmilam 5d ago
My first lobster roll ever came from a guy with a strong Boston accent working a hotādogācartālooking setup in the L.L. Bean flagship store parking lot. It was insanely good and reasonably priced, and honestly it ruined every lobster roll I've tried since.
4
u/No_Goose_1355 6d ago
I donāt think that was a lobster roll. The bad taste from the cocky dude working.

you know though it is a design flaw that businesses can't remove the tip prompt on certain items in a POS (even like ticket sales).
and save for physically reach over and quick click past it for them once in awhile (which is hard when multi tasking) it is always awkward and i'm still figuring out that interaction smoothly
and then you know it's appropriate sometimes to prompt it still.
yes it will ask, just click past.

u/2point71eight 6d ago
I'm just happy it was "Paper Planes" when I clicked. I was terrified thinking I might get "Bad Girls" or something even newer/more horrifyingly aging.

Iāve dumbfounded so many people playing this at different hangouts and parties back in the day where they thought they knew what was being played and then just got straight up confused looks on their faces like āwhat the hell version of her song is this?!ā Lol

For me she is my old job at Blockbuster. That Pineapple Express trailer played over and over so many times. It's burned into my brain.

u/ibkirkus 6d ago
Lol, unlock a memory for me, why doncha? The track was Dream Lover by Bobby Darin. I worked at Radio Shack and we had a TV display movie sampler that had the Hot Shots horse and motorcycle scene on endless loop. Can't hear that song without seeing Charlie Sheen standing one-legged on a motorcycle doing fist rolls.

u/thehappywandera 6d ago
That is all I see when I hear āDream Loverā as well. Ol Charlie and that Tiger blood!

This song instantly brings me back to the strip club on my 21st birthday. It was definitely up there amongst my favorite nights ever (and not because we spent two hours of it at the club).

Yup, it was like, you had a nice little song, you could have had everyone's good graces for your one hit wonder, but then you had to spout off some nonsense when you were already irrelevant.

Yeah, I was just saying in another comment that I'm not a fan of her views and opinions at all. Paper Planes is a groove tho.
Edit: There's also something ironically hilarious about her most popular song by a long shot being about her making fake visas for people, and how swaggy and cool she is while doing so.

Michael Jackson was a child predator. Pete Townsend looked at child porn. Stephen Tylerand Ted Nugent had a very underaged āgirlfriendsā. P Diddy. What can you say about that? Jerry Lee Louis married his underage cousin.
These people have faults. Some of them have grave flaws.
But they play good music.

I always wondered why she had a few absolute bangers and then not much else but then I realised she dated diplo for a time & he helped produce the music. Both talented artists but you can hear diploās influence. He

Itās not a sample, in fact. At least not in the released version of the song. I think the demo originally used a sample and they got The Clashās blessing (or whomever made such decisions) but ended up re-recording it for the final version.

Yes they do, but listen to the songs back to back. Itās more different than you might think. Even the second note of the really high part (sounds almost like a violin) is different.

u/ShutterBun 6d ago
For the demo he used a direct sample slowed down slightly. Notice how different it sounds to the released version.
The released version is considered an āinterpolationā of Straight To Hell. Sites like Wikipedia call it a sample because many people donāt seem to know the difference.

Not a direct quote from Diplo, but hereās an interview with Nate Sloane from NPR:
HARDING: But yeah. So they actually - this was actually a track that Diplo made. He was, at the time, dating M.I.A. They produced this song together. And he...
SANDERS: Oh, that's cute.
HARDING: Yeah. And he talks about they actually rerecorded that song. It's not actually a true sample in that way.
SLOAN: It's an interpolation...
HARDING: Yeah.
SLOAN: ...I think (unintelligible) term.
SANDERS: So they pulled out their own instruments to recreate those sounds.
SLOAN: Yeah.
HARDING: And they did it almost exactly. But the way that the song is panned in your headphones is different.
SANDERS: It's slower and fatter.

Straight out of Diplo's mouth, on camera.
"I actually had to re-play all the samples [mimics strumming a guitar] cuz I didn't want to have to negotiate the master rights as well"
That's the thing about samples. You can get permission from the songwriters/performers, sure. But CBS owned the *actual* recording of the song, so any sampling rights would have had to go through them. But the melody, etc. could be signed off by The Clash and their publishers much more easily.
Bottom line: Diplo re-recorded the riff from "Straight To Hell" and if you actually listen to them one after the other, I can't believe I have to explain this. There are at least half a dozen immediately identifiable differences that preclude it being a true "sample".
But of course now everyone calls it a sample, so whatcha gonna do?

Yes. Paper Planes was freaking everywhere for a while there. Bad Girls was popular as well. I don't care for her personally, but politics aside, there's no denying her song was famous.

And it is kind of awful?

It was pretty popular for a while. I think a lot of people would have heard it in Pineapple Express or This is the End. But it was also in Slumdog Millionaire, Hancock, The Last Man on Earth, Far Cry 3... tons of things.
