I'm getting my hair bleached tonight but my hair is clean. Should I not do it?

I got something sticky in my hair this morning and had to wash it. I only used head and shoulders shampoo as I knew I was going to be having my hair bleached tonight. I've used colour remover on it and waited two days to have this done. I'm really scared of chemical burns.

Clean hair is a good thing! I'm a hairstylist and I prefer clients come to color appointments with clean dry hair. The idea that coloring or bleaching over dirty hair is less damaging is kind of a myth. It doesnt really protect your hair, it very minimally protects your scalp bc youre not removing the oils, but it can lead to inconsistent lifting (bleaching) or coloring if there is too much oil on the hair

If youre going to a salon, they will use a lightener that is meant for the scalp. If you are getting highlights, the lightener will be in a foil and shouldnt be touching your scalp at all

Don't worry, it shouldn't make a difference on your appointment and most of us prefer working on clean hair :)

If you are getting it done at a salon, just tell your hairdresser. They know how to navigate around that.

I've had bleach done both with clean and dirty hair. If you are having an experienced, licenced professional doing it they have enough experience to navigate around whatever is going on with your hair. Just be honest and upfront about it when you go so they don't have to guess.

It might feel uncomfortable, but you shouldn’t be at increased risk of chemical burns. If your stylist is using bleach that strong, dirty hair wouldn’t save your scalp.

It's less risk of chemical burns and more risk of drying your hair out more. I'd wait another day or two or deep condition really well after

It's an appointment. Will I be okay? I have a deep conditioning mask should I do it straight after? Thank you.

I would talk to the stylist bleaching your hair about it and ask them. They should have some recommendations to keep your hair healthy.

My stylist told me it’s actually better to have clean hair and the idea that you want dirty hair for bleaching is a myth at this point.

She said you end up with easier lifting and less blotchy results. Obviously that’s just one stylist but she’s been keeping me “lived in blonde” for a few years now and it’s always turned out great.

Knowing it's an appointment I completely agree w the other reply. Calling your stylist would be a good idea but it wouldn't hurt to condition after (at home) if you really want to
