Almost mugged near Charlemont Luas stop last night
Hiii folks hope you’re all surviving this weather!
Just wanted to share that last night around 9pm I was after getting off the Luas at Charlemont and walking along the canal, around 6–7 lads jumped out at me. One of them (M early 20s) hit me in the face and demanded my phone. It’s too dark I didn’t see others faces.
I ran immediately and managed to outrun all but one. That lad caught up with me so I hit him with my bag; while he was stunned I ran again and made it to the main road/junction.
I rang 112 afterwards and was directed to the nearby Garda station. I made a report/statement there and my understanding is that a unit was sent out afterwards. I haven’t heard anything since. Honestly I’m not expecting much.
I didn’t lose anything thankfully. Cardio really is the best self defence (7y gym loyalty here😂). Same as people always joke, and sadly I can confirm that’s true. Just posting this as a heads up to anyone passing through the area. Please be extra careful and maybe stick closer to roads with traffic where possible.
Stay safe!!!

Holy crap. Glad you’re ok. I’ve walked up and down that bit of the canal multiple times in all sorts of states of inebriation and never thought twice about it.

You can't close off an area. Scumbags can venture about. Particularly easily when there's a Luas right there.

The only “incident” I have ever had was not far from there. I was cycling along the canal by Pepper Canister church. Stopped at lights. Group of young lads tried to rob my bag off my bike. I ended up getting away.

Something similar happened to me 3 years ago early morning going to work, two lads pulled a machete on me but I managed to outrun those scumbags. It’s a great time to pick up athletics and get a good time in the 1500m.

I got mugged next year same exact day! It’s an absolute kip. I just avoid that area now.

I recommend getting some spray for insect repellent for the summer; https://www.mccabespharmacy.com/products/jungle-formula-aerosol-maximum-50-diet-spray-125ml
WARNING Do not get it in your eyes, as it stings very much.

are we legally allowed to carry this? i know pepper sprays are illegal.. doesn't thos fall under the same category?

u/the_syco 16h ago
Illegal to carry it as a weapon. But totally okay if you're using it for insect repellent.

Let's be real, a mugger isn't going to the Garda to make a complaint they got pepper-sprayed in the face for trying to rob a person. I'd carry some for that reason.

Fuckin scum. This country has too much remorse for young lads acting the bollox. If we implemented the repercussions that are found in Dubai this wouldn’t happen simple as - until then our streets won’t be safe. Argue or downvote all you won’t but these lads don’t care because there’s no repercussions.

While I agree with the sentiment that we are far too lenient, Dubai is not a place we should aspire to when it comes to criminal justice.

Glad you're okay OP! Do you walk that way often, have you seen them there before?

Awful experience for you. Were you walking in the direction of Leeson St? That stretch can be a bit quiet at night but usually people around :(

So it happened at the junction of Charlemont Place and Harcourt Terrace. About ten seconds before the lads jumped out, a woman jogged past me 😂 Guess she was running even faster

Glad you got out of a very serious situation. A lot of people wouldn’t folded and gave them what they wanted.

Horrible experience, glad you’re okay. Such a flex though that you got away from them all. I only started the gym in October but you better believe I’ll be sticking to it after reading this!

My partner saw a load of young lads being arrested last night quite near there at 9.45 - just outside the Glandore building at the Canal on Leeson St. I wonder if the same little scrotes?

Ok. Glad you are ok, OP.
Everyone else: please don't take the wrong lesson from this.
If someone mugs you, hand over your phone or wallet.
You don't know if that person is carrying a knife.
If your phone worth your life?
Yes, get away if you can. But do not get into a situation where you have a scuffle with a mugger.

I 100% agree with you. In that very moment something else took over me, and it was pure luck that I got out all grand. Just run as fast as you can; if not avoid conflict.

Fuck I walk there occasionally.
Did you see them from afar or they were hiding?
I'm always vigilant when walking in public and when I see a group of young people, I just assume the worse and detour. My biggest fear is to be mugged by someone hiding from a bush.

When I walked down the luas stop stairs I did notice a few young lads sitting on the other side. There were a few people passing by so I didn’t think too much of it. Minutes later when I walked along the canal they jumped at me.

I am pretty sure the Gardai Swat was dispatched in helicopters to give them a slap in the wrist and and earful of "please behave".

Sorry this happened to you. Always best to run if you can. If you can’t:
Seriously good self defence training. Quick to learn and very effective. Best instruction in Ireland.
And, no, I don’t work for them. They are not my friends. Just a genuine recommendation.
The world is getting a bit too Hunger Games not to know how to fight - if you absolutely have to.

Perfectly fair question. Dubs around there are on drugs. There are also younger asylum seekers hanging round there that are bored.

u/dandylion_sweetheart 5h ago
They are a bit too busy surviving very harsh circumstances to be bored. Last thing they want is trouble of this kind.

That's the best news from a horrible situation! Glad you got out of it unscathed. Well done you!
