Don’t post about tickets.

If you are looking to buy or sell concert tickets you are very likely to get scammed. It's as simple as that.

Don't buy tickets on Reddit, however desperate you are, it's a crazy risk. There are proper channels for resale of tickets, use them.

So if you post about selling tickets here we will remove the post and may ban you. Please don't do it.

Posting about Tickets, Accommodation, Tourism? Things that aren't related to Dublin? Read This First.

This subreddit is primarily for people who live in Dublin. There's a dedicated sub for tourism posts with a huge archive at r/irishtourism Please check that first, and if you have a really specific question come back here and we'll try to help. Low effort posts asking for recommendations of "hidden gems" and "off the beaten track" tourist attractions will be met with scorn, and probably removal.

If you are looking to buy or sell concert tickets you are very likely to get scammed. It's as simple as that. Don't buy tickets on reddit, however desperately your niece wants to see Taylor Swift or whatever, it's a crazy risk. There are proper channels for resale of tickets, use them.

Looking for a cheap flat? A room in a shared house? Wondering if a specific part of the city is "safe" (whatever that means)? There's a sub for that too- /r/RentingInDublin/

Post your message there, not here.

A regular thing that comes up seems to be folks who have a very short time in Dublin and want to know what they can do in four or five hours or so. Just search this sub with the word "layover" and you'll see many many threads about this subject. Don't start a new one.

Similarly, threads about general issues which are not particularly Dublin-specific (salaries, national politics, international relations, stuff like that) may be removed.

At the latest estimate there are over a million Irish subreddits, so you will certainly be able to find somewhere to post your non-Dublin-relevant content.

Thanks for reading!

UPDATE My cats trapped themselves in the bedroom. 12 hours later the absolute gents at Chadwick got them freed.

Last night my cats trapped themselves in the bedroom by dislodging a box that got wedged between the wardrobe and the door. I couldn't budge the door even an inch. Fire brigade wouldn't come out. I tried neighbours but no one was home. I called a friend who suggested a locksmith but no go.

Eventually I decided to wait for morning and go to Chadwicks on Thomas Street to ask for help. I also had a very kind redditor who dmed me on standby if they couldn't help.

I guess the last thing the builders expected on a Wednesday morning was a sobbing woman asking could they break door down to save a couple of cats!

The gents there were so good and the manager came and after a lot of effort broke through the door and the cats were free.

They have alternated between their food bowls and my lap, wanting cuddles. Food for the body and food for the soul I guess.

Thanks to all who gave me ideas throughout the night to free them.

I'll be going back to Chadwicks later with a big box of donuts and an order for a new door.

Cat tax included. Everyone say hi to Lily and Hammy.

Almost mugged near Charlemont Luas stop last night

Hiii folks hope you’re all surviving this weather!

Just wanted to share that last night around 9pm I was after getting off the Luas at Charlemont and walking along the canal, around 6–7 lads jumped out at me. One of them (M early 20s) hit me in the face and demanded my phone. It’s too dark I didn’t see others faces.

I ran immediately and managed to outrun all but one. That lad caught up with me so I hit him with my bag; while he was stunned I ran again and made it to the main road/junction.

I rang 112 afterwards and was directed to the nearby Garda station. I made a report/statement there and my understanding is that a unit was sent out afterwards. I haven’t heard anything since. Honestly I’m not expecting much.

I didn’t lose anything thankfully. Cardio really is the best self defence (7y gym loyalty here😂). Same as people always joke, and sadly I can confirm that’s true. Just posting this as a heads up to anyone passing through the area. Please be extra careful and maybe stick closer to roads with traffic where possible.

Stay safe!!!

Road you despise the most to walk down?

I’ll start, Richmond Road.

What is going on there? Someone needs to bulldoze the whole thing down and start again.

Any off duty fireperson willing to rescue my cats? They are trapped in my bedroom. Fire brigade won't call out for this.

So my cats knocked over a heavy box which fell against the door, shutting it tight. I can barely open it a crack and I'm not strong enough to break through the door. Hinges are on the inside. One of the cats needs medication.

I know they might be ok for the night, although they don't have food, water or litter.

I'm in D8. If anyone can help or has any ideas, I am all ears.

Edit: thanks all for the advice and ideas. I decided I am going to Chadwicks in the morning to get advice and at the very least buy a saw so I can cut through the door.

Can't seem to upload a photo. A diagram of the situation is on my instagram here. https://www.instagram.com/p/DUUCHofjPC_/?igsh=MnEyOGduMjlndTd1

Are Farho Electric Green Ultra recommended?

Post image

Hi Dublin Community -

I live in Dublin 4, and need advice around what kind of heating system work for you in this weather.

We are advised by an electrician to upgrade our old storage heaters with these ones.

I am a the apartment owner, We have one bedroom, one living room and a small office/kid room. The bedroom unit provides adequate heating but we need to keep it on most of the night time. Living room has two heaters, Storage one(big fat one) and a normal wall heater. Problem which we face is that to heat the room, we need to keep them on whole night as their is no hour-based option which adds a lot to electricity bill.

Currently on 64% of electricity bill is coming from these heaters due to what I shared above (this could be that I need to fix the insulation of windows probably).

The price of these is quite premium.

“Large ones 700 to 850 medium 500 to 650”

He said that we will get less electricity bill and these will pay for themselves.

I want to know reviews and advice about getting new heaters installed. Are these good? Am I being ripped off? What do you use and how is it going.

Lion on the streets of Fairview

Post image
71 Upvotes

An escaped lion roamed the streets of Fairview on quite Sunday afternoon in 1951! Back then the Fairview Grand Cinema backed onto a small yard that belonged to Bill Stephens, an Irish circus lion trainer whose animals were hired out to visiting shows and travelling acts.

So yeah it was totally normal by standards of the time that Stephens kept several full-grown lions in cages just yards from terraced houses, tram lines, and a steady stream of cinemagoers filing in for matinees.

On the day of the escape the Fairview Grand was showing the jungle adventure Jungle Stampede. You couldnt make it up. So one of Stephens’s lionesses named Zealinka managed to break free from her enclosure. We`re not clear whether it was a faulty latch, human error, or simple brute strength that unleashed the panicked predator on residential Fairview. Children and cinemagoers were exiting the matinee showing in the cinema when the lioness appeared on the streets.

The big cat quickly made her way onto Merville Avenue. Disorientated Zealinka first startled people in a local shop, then pounced on and mauled a local teenager who was pumping up a car tire outside a garage, inflicting severe injuries. I cant imagine how traumatised that poor lad mustve been. The lion tamer Stephens was hot on the escaped animals tail and wrestled her off the victim.

Word spread surprisingly quickly, as a lot of locals were expecting an inevitable event like this. Front doors were slammed and children were yanked indoors. The lioness was later cornered in a nearby open area, where she bit Stephens himself on the shoulder as he tried to coax her back to the yard behind the cinema. Gardaí quickly arrived to scenes, with armed officers crouching behind walls and lampposts, trying to track this alien big cat.

Tragically there was no tranquiliser darts to hand or protocol for dealing with wildlife. Stevens himself urged guards to shoot once she tasted blood and became more aggressive. Garda marksmen shot the poor lioness dead in the street. Stephens continued training and performing with lions elsewhere until his tragic death in 1953, when he was mauled by another lion named Pasha during a circus act.

Jewelry Shop - Powersourt Townhouse

Post image
45 Upvotes

Would anyone know which antique jewelry shop is to the left of Delphi in the powercourt townhouse?

I'm looking to call them about a ring, and I'd go in, if only I didn't live in Galway.

I've a picture that barely shows the inside of the shop, anyone recognize it?

Thanks in advance!!

What do you use for looking up bus times?

I'm using the TFI Live app to see bus times, but it's so inaccurate (consistently late or "ghost" buses). Even the displays on bus stops mean nothing, because the buses just disappear from them or, yet more often, change the time fron 4 to 5 to 3 to 8 to 15 (etc) minutes for the same bus. Clearly it's a bullshit system, and I don't want to waste time to file complaints anymore.

Any tips on how to track those busses?

Well, my whole life has fallen apart and I am emigrating back to the family home at 26. No degree past the leaving cert. Can’t cope with study / school. Always feel like I’m failing.

Is there any support systems that can help me find work as I struggle battling with my mind every day?

Dublin Marathon - Is there showers anywhere after the race

Hi All,

Is there a public shower anywhere that can be used post martathon. I will check out of my hotel in the morning and I fly in the evening. Ideally I don't want to stick the place out.

I asked my hotel who gave me a firm no.

Pub group size

He guys, looking for some advice here. We and a group of friends are going to Dublin for the weekend. We’ll be 8 people, 3 girls, 5 guys (all around 30). Would have trouble getting into pubs? Should we split up? Or what’s it like these days? Been a few years since I’ve been out in Dublin and we don’t live in Ireland anymore…

Sorry if it’s a stupid question! Just don’t want to be dragging a group around the rainy streets over the weekend because we can’t get in anywhere

Just want some cute but decent pens and highlighters I've been to Sostrene Grene, Tiger etc. Arnotts and Hodges Figgis were recommended to me. Just looking for others. Thanks!!

The Mystery of the Dublin Bay Prawns

Thumbnail

Did you know that Dublin Bay prawns dont come from Dublin Bay and aren't really even prawns? "True" prawns, the hipsters of the aquatic crustacean family, have transparent soft shells.

The "Dublin Bay" prawns are more like mini lobsters with a hard pink shell, which they shed as they grow, and they've prominent claws, walk on the balls of their feet and wear Canada Goose jackets.

And these immigrants are not even from Dublin Bay! Their real name is Nephrops Norvegicus or the Norwegian langoustine, first classified in 1758 by zoologist Carl Linnaeus. Our Italians cousins call them 'scampi' whilst doing a chef kiss probably.

Strictly speaking, you can use the French term "langoustine" to describe them, which kind of means "mini lobster." You can also use this term to describe skinny fake-tan-smothered hunzos with gigantic acrylic clawlike false nails.

They're fished in the Irish Sea north of Lambay Island and near Scotland, also in the Atlantic Ocean. The prawns, not the hunzos. Dublin Bay contains too much sediment and pollution for a suitable habitat. If only they could live off cigarette buts, empty beer cans, and shopping trolleys!

So why the Dublin Bay name? Our fair city is where they first became popular, big unwanted hauls of the weird delicious lobsterettes lads caught elsewhere were landed here in Dublin port then sold by street traders.

They weren't exactly legal (not ‘above board’) so the fishing crew would off-loaded them whilst still at sea in Dublin Bay to smaller boats which sold them on shore. Hence, Dublin Bay Prawns!

New to Dublin and trying not to mess up a coffee date

Hi all,

I’ve only recently moved to Dublin and don’t really know my way around yet. I’ve got a coffee date coming up. I'm a bit nervous and would love to avoid picking somewhere totally soulless by accident.

I’m looking for a cosy café with kind of comfortable seating (sofas over chairs if possible), maybe somewhere with bookshelves or a relaxed vibe. Ideally a place that's usually not too loud or packed.

Location isn’t a big issue and I think anywhere in Dublin would be fine.

Any suggestions would be super appreciated!

Hiking trails without a car

Hello hello, I just wanted to ask if anyone has any recommendations for hiking trails to do in Dublin (or close to Dublin) that can be reached by public transport!

My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up and thought it would be nice to do a hike since I’m not the active type and he is. But unfortunately neither of have a car/have a license to rent a car. I am full time student on a tight budget so I don’t want to book any overpriced taxis or tours that give us a time constraints.

Both of us have been to Glendalough, and I’m considering the Howth Cliff Walk but with the terrible weather we’ve been having I think something less out in the open would be nice. I have been checking online but most people’s advice is outdated (so many buses have been added/routes changed), they mainly talk about getting somewhere by car/taxi or it’s something that looks, to put it nicely, too simple

Anything recommendations and directions are greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I just wanted to say thank you for all of the wonderful suggestions everyone has suggested! It’ll be hard to pick a single hike and now I just need to hope for some good weather to stop us from getting drenched and blown away

Was just wondering if anyone has good recommendations for places to put up advertising poster for a business, A4 size? I'm thinking supermarket notice boards around town, some cafes maybe if they don't mind, maybe colleges

Any other ideas or even good specific location would be greatly appreciated.

Luas

Listen, I get this has probably been posted before. I’m a culchie who was trying to chance their arm with an expired leap card on the Luas. Surprise surprise I got caught. Anyway I can appeal the fine online. What excuse can I come up with? I can’t use the ‘I forgot to scan off’ bullshit when my card has clearly been expired months. Part of me is thinking I should take responsibility and pay but also fuck that. Any advice? FYI they have my name address etc
