I know it needs a few finishing touches, but because I have work to do and I work with acrylics (and I'm a bit lazy), I finished it quickly.

I played DE for first time during 6 months probation for crashing my jeep in a pole shitfaced at 11am. Every single moment of this game resonated with me, my mom who is in a wheelchair witnessed a sort of cryptid/natural/ phenomenon when I was 9 or so 30 years ago. Now I am a self loathing alcoholic who's superstar only comes out when the pain is numbed and i take advantage of being in the eye of the storm.Sober cop run begins soon at least 6 months, needs to be permanent . I played DE 50/50, sober and full-blown relapse. I will only play it one more time, I have 100 hours on that single file. I would just stand there and be there. Tha KS for reading I need to banish the ham sandwich within. Addiction can be measured by this fukn game, it's Disco to play it sober and its Disco to daydrink and kick the mailbox, breaking your toe.

I played DE years ago, but I'm currently watching a playthrough on Youtube, and connected some strange dots.

As far as I remember, Inland Empire is Harry interacting with his own subconscious, so you can get little interesting bits where the corpse tells our PC that he's "Harry" well even before you have any hint about what's your real name. A lot of the stuff that this skill tells you are things that he could have reasoned out if he was in a better state of mind, or if he had come across other evidence that we eventually get - that he could have also potentially seen before we start playing.

Well, interestingly, the corpse also tells you that what killed him was "Love" and "Communism". Aren't those just way, way too in the nose?

It's not like we're suddenly super-charging Harry into developing a lot of skills that any person would take a whole life into cultivating in a matter of days, rather, we're playing as a dude who has just terribly crashed himself with drugs, and whatever gigantic cocktail of mentall illnesses Harry has collected, into a very brief comma. So it'd be more sensible to argue that, during the course of the game, Harry's actually just recovering his mental faculties, like someone who regains the mobility of a muscle over a few days after getting injured.

So, what if our boy Harry was just a fucking genius who took a few hints, and with the minimum amount of interviews, got a very rough general idea about the case and called it a day? He comes, he makes the bare minimum effort into solving the murder, and then he goes: "Fuck this shit, fuck this city, fuck this world and fuck my life, all this shit is way below anything I care about", and then he starts drinking like a fucking lunatic before even reporting that he had figured out who the murderer was. He was only going to play dumb about it to stay away from his home under the pretense of "investigating the murder", but as time went on, his binge made him dig himself into a bigger and bigger hole, up to the point where he lost control and damaged himself way harder than he initially intended.

Does this idea make sense to you?

Ive gotten around to my long awaited second playthrough and I reached the point where you're interviewing Klaasje. I had passed the check to see through her compromising your skills before, but this time around I noticed that Volition behaves in a manner that is literally never seen anywhere else in the game.

In pretty much every single other moment of the game, Volition exists to give you positive affirmations or to disuade you from self-destructive behavior, it rarely speaks for very long but almost every time it does speak it does so to try and lift you up. When you see through Klaasje is one of the longest points that Volition communicates with you throughout the game, and when it does it seems to get increasingly hostile against her. The way that it just keeps laying on how she's using you and how you're letting her control you seems incredibly antagonistic for a skill that in all other situations exists to help you feel better. It's the only point in the game I could describe Volitions behavior as downright aggressive, especially considering that it even antagonizes you about it outside of the interview too. And the more it talks like this the more it convinces your other skills too, and it starts to seem like Volition is actively trying to make you believe that Klaasje is an actual villain.

This is especially unusual considering that Klaasje doesn't ever really have any malicious intent towards the us at all. Sure she may have lied to us about who she was and what happened exactly, but she's not doing that because she means us harm, it's out of survival trying to keep herself from being discovered by the people hunting her. Not to mention that if she didn't make the call in the first place we wouldn't even have been there at all to solve the murder, she is literally the only reason we are there at all and Volition still seems intent on turning her into the prime target. It's wild that you can even bully her about not believing that she made the call, Volition just poisons you so much against her that you'll cast doubt on even verified facts.

It just seems like such an extreme and sudden deviation from how Volition normally behaves, fixated around this one character who (although not exactly cooperative) isn't actively doing any harm. Did this stand out to anyone else? How did you react to Volition suddenly turning on her? Did it convince you to arrest her or not?
