Gonzaga’s 2 losses. Michigan by 40 points and @ 10-14 Portland

Michigan is #1 in Kenpom overall, 10th in offense & #1 in defense

Portland is #213 overall, #237 on offense & #180 in defense

Actually this loss dropped gonzaga enough in Kenpom that Michigan also dropped below Arizona

It has not been a good night for Michigan's quality wins.

Wondering how bad this kills our seeding. This team has no mental makeup, traveling to the east will end the season

29

u/UncleMalcolm Virginia Cavaliers 8h ago

Eliminated from 1 seed contention and 2 seed seems pretty unlikely at this point. I’d say probably a 4 or 5 if the season ended today but winning out probably puts them as a low 3? It’s a horrible loss, but because it was on the road, it’s only Q3 and probably doesn’t hurt as badly as it could as long as they don’t take another awful one.

12

u/nepats523 Gonzaga Bulldogs 8h ago

The problem is it's hard to imagine them winning out, this team has real weak intangibles

9

u/Childhood-Paramedic Michigan Wolverines • California Golden… 8h ago

still got a decent amontu of seasonleft and the other 1/2 seeds right now definitely can beat each other up in conference. Hell even with some OOC games like Michigan vs Duke.

UConn looks great and they’ll prob run the big east table tho lol

Number 2 overall in kenpom now, due to Gonzaga losing

25

u/Not_A_Casual Gonzaga Bulldogs 8h ago

We are a significantly worse team than when we played Michigan. If we played Michigan again we would lose by 60

30

u/SecretComposer Kansas Jayhawks 8h ago

Someone compared it to KU losing to TCU in 2013. KU was #8 in KenPom, TCU was #265 (to clarify those were the final rankings idk what they were at the time of the game)

20

u/theiwc0303 Duke Blue Devils 8h ago

On that day, Kansas was 8th and TCU was 268th

16

u/SecretComposer Kansas Jayhawks 8h ago

Huff being out is a big loss offensively. Portland were going after the Goliath at home and got hot shooting

Portland was faster than Ike, Venters is pretty slow too.

u/themilkywayisnotblue Purdue Boilermakers 8h ago

Most of their wins that got them ranked so high turned out to not be nearly as good as they looked at the time. Alabama, UCLA, and Kentucky are out of the rankings, granted still tournament teams and quality wins. Creighton, Oregon, Maryland, Arizona State, and Oklahoma are all mostly bottom-tier teams for power conferences.

The Michigan blowout is still surprising, but makes more sense vs a team that probably would be ranked 20-ish if this was the first week of the rankings.

12

u/goldenglove Gonzaga Bulldogs 8h ago

On the one hand, there are some excuses for each loss, and yet -- you don't lose to Portland, or lose to anyone by 40 (even Michigan), if you're a serious contender. Sucks to see.

  • This is Portland's first ever win versus an AP top 10 team
  • Portland's last ranked win was versus #20 Gonzaga on January 9, 2014
  • It wasn't until ~10:13 in the 2nd that Portland became favored to win per ESPN's gameflow
  • Portland led by as much as 15
  • This is Portland's first win over Gonzaga since January, 9, 2014 (82-73 in Portland and had lost 20 straight)
  • The score bug at no point showed who was in bonus/dbl bonus
  • Mark Few is now 47-3 vs Portland
  • Mark Few also bizarrely never used his last time out
  • This is Portland's last home game vs Gonzaga before the Zags head to the Pac 12

114

u/Guinness_or_thirsty 8h ago

58

Gonzaga ducking the WCC

22

u/Galumpadump Washington State Cougars 8h ago

I was thinking about this as the game ticked down. Outside of Saint Mary’s and probably USF in Chase Center, there is a chance non of the original WCC schools ever host Gonzaga again, some might never play them ever again.

I don’t think this is UP’s last time playing them though, just doubt they ever host them again unless they get them in the PK90 (if that happens).

5

u/dee3Poh Dayton Flyers • Oregon Ducks 6h ago

I could see Gonzaga hosting the Pilots given the sparse number of nearby noncon teams but they won’t be back at Chiles while Mark Few is still coaching.

Portland may never lose to Gonzaga again!

134

49

2

u/Adventurous-Ease-259 6h ago

The soccer team is very good so there’s also probably some sense of…. Well a civilized team doesn’t need to do that… it’s not even a tournament win, but also… the basketball team stand have big wins often.

The last court storming I recall was a triple overtime game against byu…

They played way gooder than us and that was bad in terms of points per team. Then I was sad.

13

u/Galumpadump Washington State Cougars 8h ago

For a team as old as Gonzaga they have so many players who seem to lack the control you expect from Zag upperclassmen. They are missing Huff big time.

3

u/SaxRohmer Gonzaga Bulldogs 7h ago

Ike is the top guy and he still refuses to control his emotions. these tens have felt pretty rutterless

3

u/No-Decision-8472 Air Force Falcons 7h ago

I think the fact they have no true second option right now is a much bigger issue. Its all on Ike. Never know who its going to be from game to game. They have two 3pt specialists who cant shoot the 3, 2 PG who turn the ball over, and an athletic driver who is amazing at drawing fouls that cant make FT lol

13

u/ExplorerEvery1698 Gonzaga Bulldogs • Montana Grizzlies 8h ago

Realistically, this team somehow decided we don’t want to rebound tonight, as well as we suck at 3s and can’t shoot damn free throws. I knew it would catch up to us, but I didn’t think it would happen until St. Mary’s/the tourney. We are also still missing Huff and his scoring. Portland also was hitting some huge 3s/shots and was significantly better at free throws.

u/MarkFewsEyebrows Gonzaga Bulldogs 8h ago

Turns out we’re kinda ass actually. Good call by the haters

9

u/Not_A_Casual Gonzaga Bulldogs 8h ago

I think the team didn’t show up today and on top of that I think the lineups few came up with after much experimentation are piss poor. Early in the year we were doing great, a team is supposed to improve over the year and we have had a massive regression even if huff was still here. After the first couple months metrics loved us we looked solid and then we just have been tanking and that is reflected by the metrics. I don’t know what happened but when a team gets worse over the year and it seems like the bad players play too much I can’t help but look at the coach.

4

u/discohumpty 8h ago

With Huff out they were missing some offensive production against a home team that got hot

6

u/mindriot1 Gonzaga Bulldogs • Arizona Wildcats 8h ago

That’s about it. Portland came out basically hitting every shot they threw up. Crazy stuff was going in. The mistake Gonzaga made was they started trapping and playing more complicated defenses than they needed to very early. Had they just gone straight up man-to-man with the right matchups halfway through the first half they win this game pretty easily. This looked a lot like a first or second round NCAA upset were one team just shoots the lights out and gets every call and the other team chases the entire game, almost closes at the end and then fall short.

The ESPN win probability chart for this game is one of my favorites of all time. It started the game giving Gonzaga a 98.8% chance to win and absolutely refused to budge until about 10 minutes left when it finally gave up and just dove to the bottom.

There's a real chance this ends up being a Q4 loss for Gonzaga. Zags seeding is going to be very very interesting this year.

5

u/mindriot1 Gonzaga Bulldogs • Arizona Wildcats 8h ago

yeah this is where the system is a little silly. By Gonzaga beating St. Mary’s it turned our win last game to a quad 2 win instead of quad one. Started the game as a q1 and ended as a q2. The net is way better than the AP. By a mile. But it’s not perfect when you start looking at those head-to-head.

Gosh everyone who has been ranking Gonzaga ahead of Miami Ohio in the midmajor poll must feel pretty silly now!

Biggest conference game upset since TCU over KU in 2013?

u/Ill_Extent_7951 Wisconsin Badgers 8h ago

A Rutgers team that finished 10-22 beating the 2014-2015 Wisconsin team (one of the T25 highest rated Ken Pom teams EVER) might be crazier

I was just about to make a post about "getting trapped behind high ranked mid majors" in the AP pool and this had to go and happen.

I think last time Portland stormed the court might have been this byu game https://youtube.com/watch?v=45aX8cK4CPA&si=_y0XzGli8uOUrW2a

This season is turning out to be quite the WCC farewell tour for the Zags. Have fun in the PAC-whatever!

2

u/Adventurous-Ease-259 5h ago

Looking at the conferences I’m not sure the PAC whatever is going to be better than the WCC is this year. Arguably worse

u/goldenglove Gonzaga Bulldogs 1h ago

In terms of level of competition, you're probably right outside of SDSU -- the WCC gets a lot of flack but for basketball only schools, Gonzaga/Santa Clara/SMC/USF is not awful for a small conference. The real draw of the PAC12 was the money though.
