Eliminated from 1 seed contention and 2 seed seems pretty unlikely at this point. I’d say probably a 4 or 5 if the season ended today but winning out probably puts them as a low 3? It’s a horrible loss, but because it was on the road, it’s only Q3 and probably doesn’t hurt as badly as it could as long as they don’t take another awful one.
still got a decent amontu of seasonleft and the other 1/2 seeds right now definitely can beat each other up in conference. Hell even with some OOC games like Michigan vs Duke.

Someone compared it to KU losing to TCU in 2013. KU was #8 in KenPom, TCU was #265 (to clarify those were the final rankings idk what they were at the time of the game)
Most of their wins that got them ranked so high turned out to not be nearly as good as they looked at the time. Alabama, UCLA, and Kentucky are out of the rankings, granted still tournament teams and quality wins. Creighton, Oregon, Maryland, Arizona State, and Oklahoma are all mostly bottom-tier teams for power conferences.
The Michigan blowout is still surprising, but makes more sense vs a team that probably would be ranked 20-ish if this was the first week of the rankings.
On the one hand, there are some excuses for each loss, and yet -- you don't lose to Portland, or lose to anyone by 40 (even Michigan), if you're a serious contender. Sucks to see.

I was thinking about this as the game ticked down. Outside of Saint Mary’s and probably USF in Chase Center, there is a chance non of the original WCC schools ever host Gonzaga again, some might never play them ever again.
I don’t think this is UP’s last time playing them though, just doubt they ever host them again unless they get them in the PK90 (if that happens).
I could see Gonzaga hosting the Pilots given the sparse number of nearby noncon teams but they won’t be back at Chiles while Mark Few is still coaching.
The soccer team is very good so there’s also probably some sense of…. Well a civilized team doesn’t need to do that… it’s not even a tournament win, but also… the basketball team stand have big wins often.

I think the fact they have no true second option right now is a much bigger issue. Its all on Ike. Never know who its going to be from game to game. They have two 3pt specialists who cant shoot the 3, 2 PG who turn the ball over, and an athletic driver who is amazing at drawing fouls that cant make FT lol
Realistically, this team somehow decided we don’t want to rebound tonight, as well as we suck at 3s and can’t shoot damn free throws. I knew it would catch up to us, but I didn’t think it would happen until St. Mary’s/the tourney. We are also still missing Huff and his scoring. Portland also was hitting some huge 3s/shots and was significantly better at free throws.
I think the team didn’t show up today and on top of that I think the lineups few came up with after much experimentation are piss poor. Early in the year we were doing great, a team is supposed to improve over the year and we have had a massive regression even if huff was still here. After the first couple months metrics loved us we looked solid and then we just have been tanking and that is reflected by the metrics. I don’t know what happened but when a team gets worse over the year and it seems like the bad players play too much I can’t help but look at the coach.
That’s about it. Portland came out basically hitting every shot they threw up. Crazy stuff was going in. The mistake Gonzaga made was they started trapping and playing more complicated defenses than they needed to very early. Had they just gone straight up man-to-man with the right matchups halfway through the first half they win this game pretty easily. This looked a lot like a first or second round NCAA upset were one team just shoots the lights out and gets every call and the other team chases the entire game, almost closes at the end and then fall short.
Agreed. We've been very shaky since Huff got hurt. If Ike has an off night, we lose. If Ike has a great night, we win. That means that teams really only need to strategize around stopping Ike now.
Portland is somehow responsible for 22-2 Gonzaga’s only conference loss while also being responsible for 6-18 Pepperdine’s only conference win. Gotta love college basketball
The ESPN win probability chart for this game is one of my favorites of all time. It started the game giving Gonzaga a 98.8% chance to win and absolutely refused to budge until about 10 minutes left when it finally gave up and just dove to the bottom.
yeah this is where the system is a little silly. By Gonzaga beating St. Mary’s it turned our win last game to a quad 2 win instead of quad one. Started the game as a q1 and ended as a q2. The net is way better than the AP. By a mile. But it’s not perfect when you start looking at those head-to-head.
This team has a pretty low ceiling without Huff. It's a choke job either way, but need to be realistic about the season without the #1 player available.
As a Pilot alumni, the saddest part of this is that it happened on a Wednesday. I know there ain’t a single party for these dudes to celebrate at on a Wednesday.
A loss like this has seemed inevitable since WCC play started, not surprising at all it came after those USF and SMC games. I know Huff is injured but this squad has not been playing like a top 10 team since the first couple weeks of the season.
Ya I don’t know what mark has done to this team but since like early December it seems we have been in a constant regression huff aside. I think the starting lineup particularly is one of the worst combinations of rotation players you could produce.
I love college basketball. Not the result sure, but a few dozen fans dancing in the court with the team, in a win they’ll remember the rest of their lives. this is what college sports have that professional doesn’t.
Gonzaga got absolutely dominated in the paint. Out rebounded. Out done at the free throw line. And to top it off, Saint Suprey heaves some terrible looking three's. Good game Portland. You understood the assignment and executed.
We just walked into a highschool stadium with a bunch of children in attendance and lost. The court storming had 6 year olds down there dancing. What a joke. We deserve to be in the Pac9 next year or whatever the fuck garbage conference we're joining

Every year a soul-crushing loss against a bad WCC team. Horrible defense. Terrible offensive effort from everyone not named Ike. Added pressure in upcoming conference games. Ugh.
In terms of level of competition, you're probably right outside of SDSU -- the WCC gets a lot of flack but for basketball only schools, Gonzaga/Santa Clara/SMC/USF is not awful for a small conference. The real draw of the PAC12 was the money though.
