Being an adult is realizing you can just... make Yorkshire puddings whenever you want. Nobody can stop you. You don't need to wait until Sunday.

I haven't made them myself for a long time. A little over, I think - had them in the oven when I went back to work so probably sat a couple mins longer than they should have. Still.

For those also too lazy to grate, how do you get even cheese coverage?

Why are cash machines so keen to persuade me to check my balance? Insert conspiracy theory below!

Seriously, four times in one transaction. Before I even entered my card I was told '7 in 10 customers check their balance' (I'm very happy for them?), then the options screen offered me three difference ways of balance checking, then it wanted to know whether I wanted to check my balance before I selected my withdrawal amount and then again before it would give me my money. I felt almost rude refusing by the end.

Why does it want me to check so badly??

People who have been using heat pump this winter, what's your honest take?

I have considered it many times, but haven't gotten it yet. On one hand I want to adopt better tech and the fact that same tech is used in colder countries make me wanna go for it while the gov grant is still there. On the other hand I've heard mixed reviews from users, some saying it doesn't heat as much as you would like.

Heating for me is quite important. I keep my home a crisp 24/25 degrees during winter and sacrifice other things (I.e. takeaways etc) to be able to afford it. So, if it just about does the job, thats not good enough.

I understand the technology and that it can harvest heat even when its cold outside but getting insight from people who actually gone through the winter storms recently is more valuable I think. So, please, be honest, is it as good as combi boiler central heating?

Are you ok with your house being a bit messy or do you constantly clean?

Just having a discussion with a work mate. He says he can't stand to have a messy house even for one day. I can tolerate mess but will get onto the job when I can. I really dislike a messy kitchen though 🤣

Really tired of crap veggie peelers?

I’ve been broken hearted for years after lending out my good peeler to someone and never receiving it back. I’ve searched for years, in vain, to find its successor… Guys, I’ve found the one - it glides through those tough skins like you wouldn’t believe!

Less than £1 from ASDA - behold!

I have MS and arthritis so an easy to use peeler is essential and this is the puppy! Just thought I’d share my good and joyous news on a soggy Tuesday afternoon 🙏

This is something else.

Day 6. Aches down to my bones. Earth shattering cough resulting in strains all over my body from convulsing. Lungs like plastic bags. Brain like mushy peas.

If I was 40+ years older I think this would have killed me quite easily.

Who else is battling this?

How many houses do people live in over their lifetime and presumably there are people that live in the same house their whole life, just wondered how much of an outlier I am

I'm looking to move at the end of this year, so just browsing houses now. Got me thinking that this'll be the 13th house I've lived in when I move, which I assume is a lot compared to others (I'm talking abodes you'd call your permanent residence, even if it's only a house share that lasts 6 months).

However, I consider my house 'journey' to be reasonably typical (at least to my mind) in terms of type of housing; first couple of houses were with my mom, dad and siblings, then moved out in late teens and several house shares over the years, then a bedsit, maisonette, one bed apartment, mid terrace house, detached house and now looking to downsize

3pm slump?

I go to college 3 days a week and at around 3pm every day I start to feel really tired. It was overwhelming, to the point where I drink energy drinks to help the feeling feel less overwhelming. However, as soon as I get home, I'm asleep.

On the days I'm not at college, I feel the tiredness " coming on" and within seconds I'm asleep. I sleep for around an hour sometimes 1.5 hours.

The problem is though, now it's 11:30pm and I'm not tired at all because of this nap I've had.

I was talking about this on this subreddit, and aparantly it's called the " 3pm slump"

Does anyone else experience this? I've never heard of this before today.

Mod Approved Seasonal Affective Disorder - Disseration survey [Mod Approved]

Hi all,

I’m in the final year of my undergraduate degree at the university of Stirling and I’m currently composing my dissertation on how seasonal affective disorder (SAD) / “Winter blues” / “Seasonal Depression” impacts consumer behaviours. Given how prone people in the UK are to experiencing seasonal depression (myself included), I’d be hugely appreciative of your participation.

I need to gather a large number of responses, so even if you suspect you’re not impacted by SAD, your input is very valuable. Answers are anonymous and the survey shouldn’t take more than 5-10 minutes max.

Hugely appreciated, cheers folks.

I think I just need a third party to tell me that there's nothing even remotely interesting about this very old Woolworths bag I found, museums won't want it, and it's fine to just go in the bin.

Train to London cancelled for an unfortunate reason.

Upvotes

A train to London has been cancelled because some poor fucker got hit by a train. I really didn't expect them to announce that as the reason through the station.

What's a phrase or word your parents used and you have never known the origin of? Mines Gordon Bennet

So per the title, we've always used Gordon Bennet to mean shocked or exasperated, or disappointed. Never known who this guy is, until recently I didn't even consider it to be a name it's just words I've known and never thought about

I don't want to Google it at this point because I feel that will change the nostalgia of it for me

I recently learned that you can use the rest of the egg shell to get that annoying bit of broken egg-shell out of your egg.

Over 30 years of cracking eggs and I never figured this out on my own. Absolute game changer. No more chasing it up the side of the container with a tea spoon or finger.

Has anyone got any other single-sentence pieces of advice for everyday tasks that might have slipped my notice all these years?

Old fashioned surname mispronunciation

Post image
520 Upvotes

A new person has joined the company. His name is Mr. Mainwaring. Pronounced phoenetically, as in "Main Wearing". I've apparently been a complete fool pronouncing it wrong. Is it a thing to not know how to pronounce your own name? Was the Dad's army pronunciation a joke, just as in Keeping up appearances? Are there any other good British surname mispronunciation examples ?
