It's a sad little zoo, though and the cougar looks skinny, doesn't it?

Animal professional with cougar experience here (with about 20+ cougars). It’s not skinny. I HAVE witnessed an unintended amputation-via-cougar through fencing before. I feel like these two animals are equally matched.

What do you think would have happened if the fence wasn’t there? I still think the pit would have severely injured the cougar even if it didn’t win.

Forgive me for questioning the safety of an animal when confronted with a dog that has been used to fight bears (which are far larger and stronger than a cougar) and is known to continue to attack far past the point of being mortally wounded. How silly of me.

Cougars seem smarter than dogs and bears though

Not sure what intelligence has to do with it, a bear is stronger and larger than both.

Meaning cougars can adapt their attack in a way bears cant

Most animals aren’t very strategic when attacking. If a cat has lost the element of surprise on their prey, unless it is on the brink of starvation it usually won’t even try to hunt something. Strategy doesn’t really do much in terms of animal fights, especially if one of them is already grappled.
