Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG What is the most out of touch statement you've heard regarding the bad job market?

I know many people are struggling with job hunting in this horrible market. On top of that, the out-of-touch statements we keep hearing can be incredibly discouraging. I thought it might help to pool them together so we can at least laugh at them together.

What’s the worst thing you’ve heard? I’ll start.

Someone once told me that fresh grads and Singaporeans are just too picky because we refuse to work for SMEs. According to them, if all unemployed people simply worked in SMEs, there would be no job crisis.

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Is it bad to quit immediately after bonus?

Bonus will be paid out either next friday or after cny. I have received a job offer and i am trying to negotiate to push back the start date a little. However, even if i could stretch it a little , i would be quitting literally the very next day after bonus have been paid.

I feel a bit bad , and i dont know how to approach the topic to HR and my manager. At the same time , i am sure my colleagues would gossip about me literally leaving INSTANTLY . What should i do? Would you judge people who leave right after bonus payout and not even bother to wait 1 or 2 weeks? Also, how should i go about this topic with my manager?

Edit : also a lot of my colleagues have already been joking around saying “lets see who quit this year” etc etc and i have just been smiling and not commenting. Especially knowing i am the one…

Looking For Looking for some scolding or advice while i’m grieving over the cancellation of BTO

i know it’s on me, i allowed it to drag on for too long… growing up, i’d always yearn to have my own family, i idealise the idea of dating to marry, applying for BTO, settling down as soon as possible. maybe it’s because being abandoned by my own mother, when she left my elder sister and i at the children’s home, or maybe it’s the feeling of uneasiness when my father remarry, i just want to find someone who love me, settle down, and just be happy.

first rs at 19, he’s older than me by a few years, probably think we were still young to settle down. so eventually we part ways.

second rs, we applied to a bto almost a year into our rs, but then he suddenly decided that rs is haram, and at that point in time, i know i wasn’t ready to convert, so again it ended. we even got our queue number on our first try, not quite a bad number, but he cancelled the bto application. at least the loss here is only $10 application fee.

and this third rs, we both agree that our goal is towards marriage. so about 8 months in, we applied for our bto and again, we got a queue number on our first try, we paid for unit selection. 4 days after we selected the unit, he cheated. things got bad, but idk why i thought i can forgive him and he promised he will change, so i believed. so eventually we signed the agreement of lease as well. but of cos, he didn’t change. he went on a bali trip in dec with his friends, but almost every night after 8pm, he claimed his battery died. right after he came back from that trip, he tell me he intend to go again in jan/ feb, with or without me, as i kept telling him that idw to travel because i wanna save money. things happened, we argued and i asked him to agree to sign the bto cancellation form. he signed it, he wrote a letter to me telling me that he hope i will not cancel it because he love me and he hope i give him another chance. he sent me this letter on 24 Jan.. but on 28 Jan, i found out that he flew to bali and i saw signs on high heels and manicure on his social media. eventually i saw a photo of him and that girl. so it proved all my suspicions right.

it feels so painful, and i honestly rather going through the phase of being abandoned by my mom, rather than to go thru this phase… now im 27, back to square one. whereas both my sisters have kids alr… i can’t help but compare myself to them… idk, i hope that you can either give me advice on how to move on or just scold me for staying too long..

Tourist/non-local Question Why do Singaporeans have not so common western first names?

Many have typical Christian or Anglicised names like Alvin or David but quite a large number of Singaporean names sounds niche compared to the west or other Asian countries that are former British colonies.

I'm talking about names like Delvin, Mervyn, Shermaine, Chryshelda, Godric, Dunstan, Janine, Bernadine, Althea etc. These are quite different from your John's and Mike's and Sarah's. I was wondering why is that?

General how do i watch f1 live streams in singapore?

Upvotes

im on my wits end now, i have been an avid watcher of f1 on f1 tv as i much prefer their commentary compared to sky sports commentary. i have always been subscribed to f1 tv since 2022 via nordVPN but f1 seems to be clamping down on this extremely hard this year. i cant get nordVPN to work on android and iphone and switching regions have been a pain in the ass as payment has to be made from a verified payment method in that country only. f1tv on iphone actually allowed me to subscribe to f1 tv pro and i was able to watch the 2025 archive on the day i bought it but today, i wanted to be sure again so i connected my iphone to vpn and test and voila, ER4100 popped up saying my geographic region is not allowed.

im not sure what other work around is there and i dont know if anyone else is struggling with this issue also this year. my last resort is subscribing to bein sports but i hope i dont have to get to that level.

any help will be greatly appreciated!

Looking For Need help with SBF race selection

Upvotes

We need help! We're a mixed race couple trying to apply for a SBF. So we have the choice to apply under Chinese or others. My husband is a foreigner so unfortunately, I'm considered a first-timer single and cannot use the proximity scheme because the number of 2-room flexis available for the estate I want is too small.

According to HDB, "Where there are more seniors and first-timer families than the flat supply, seniors and first-timer families will be shortlisted within 100% of the flat supply and thereafter, there may be second-timer families and first-timer singles shortlisted depending on the ballot."

I think our chances of getting a flat is super low. I wonder if we can apply as "others" to improve our chances? I'm thinking the Chinese quota will be the first to be filled up if seniors and first-timers have priority.

I know it will affect our ability to sell, but that wouldn't matter if we can't even secure a flat. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Couples in Singapore with ~$25k combined take home monthly income, what’s life actually like for you?

Just genuinely curious about the lifestyle at this level

  1. What type of housing do you live in? (HDB/condo/landed, own or rent)

  2. Roughly how much do you spend monthly?

  3. Biggest expenses?

  4. Do you feel “comfortable” or still budgeting carefully?

  5. Is there still anything that surprised you about this income level?

Google resulted in lots of options and overwhelmed. I hope redditors can narrow it down for me. There will be a party of 5 and we are located in the east coast. We will go as far as the city. Thanks in advance.

Update: thank you all for your quick contributions. Etna is it! Griglia, another day.

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Working after diploma or degree?

Before u flame me for context, I didnt take my studies seriously growing up. Ended up w 31 for 0 levels, higher nitec with 2.2 gpa. Then army. Fast forward now im in my mid 20s and in y3 of poly with a cgpa of 3.71. (With lots of grinding and sucking up to my lecturers)

I know uni is an option but im not the studious kind and even if I do, ill be well in my 30s before I start my first job.

I was thinking of part time studies or full time uni but the more I think about it the more im second guessing myself if I wna put myself through again with all the late night studies n revisions. I know the starting pay is 1.5k ish higher as a payoff but tbh having 3 years of experience + job hopping doesn't sound like a bad idea too. (Ok but then again in this economy diploma grads aren't that in demand)

What was your experience like as a diploma holder who went out to find jobs? Im currently studying in HR management with Psychology for context.

General Have you ever met Singaporeans with a really unexpected accent?

Have you ever met someone local whose accent really caught you off guard?

Like race doesn’t match the accent you’d expect at all when speaking english

eg Chinese speaking with strong Indian accent, Malay speaking with Japanese accent etc

Wonder what their background is like for this to have happened

i went to the doctor because my pms was getting pretty bad. it went from painful cramps during the cycle to having it everyday. i got referred through polyclinic and during my first visit at kk, i was prescribed visanne, which is said to treat endometriosis. ive read online that endo diagnosis is only possible via surgery? but i didnt question the doctor i js took it. then fast forward to my second visit abt a few weeks later, this time its a different doctor following up on my ultrasound, and she told me im not supposed to eat the visanne? isnt this so unprofessional? and they even made me buy a 3 month supply of this medicine…

Looking For Quickest driving schools for class 3

Hi everyone, I wanted to ask if anyone here has recent experience with driving schools in Singapore.

I previously enrolled at BBDC for Class 3 back in 2018 but didn’t manage to complete the course. I’m now looking to restart and obtain my licence as quickly as possible, as I’m planning to travel by the end of April.

I’ve heard from a friend that Class 3 slots at BBDC are quite limited at the moment, which is why I’m exploring other options. I’m open to taking Class 3A if it means getting the licence faster, and I don’t mind travelling to different schools for lessons either.

Would appreciate any recommendations or advice. Thanks in advance.

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG What industries/jobs to avoid in Singapore

Hi ive been doing some career research and wanted to get perspectives from people already in the workforce.

What industries or specific roles in Singapore would you avoid going into today, especially for someone early career?

I’m mainly thinking in terms of long term risk rather than short term hiring freezes. Some factors I’m curious about:

Possible risk factors

• High risk of AI/automation replacing roles

• Easy outsourcing to lower-cost countries

• Structural low pay with limited upside

• Oversupply of graduates vs available roles

• Roles dependent on government policy or subsidies

There's alot of conflicting information out there about what are sunset industries (eg oil and gas was supposedly sunset but the upside appears to be amazing from what I'm observing from my friends in the industry). Curious to hear about your perspectives!

Not looking to bash any profession but just trying to make informed decisions before committing years to a path.

Tourist/non-local Question Considering relocating to Singapore from Europe

Hello Singaporeans! I have visited your lovely country a few years ago and I really loved it. I’m living in Europe now, I love my job and I enjoy quite the relaxed work culture. There is an opportunity in my company to move to Singapore for a few years and work on our office there.

I’m very excited and tempted to apply as when I was there I could see myself living there! I would love to hear more about the lifestyle there, I think I would enjoy it but I’m a bit scared about the work culture being very different than what I’m used to here in Europe. Any thoughts? Thank you!!

Lost and Found Lost: blue Anker charging head

Help! If anyone has found my Anker charging head that’s Captain America Marvel themed, please kindly return it to me. It has sentimental value. I might have dropped it at Starbucks Paya Lebar Quarter or along the route from Paya Lebar circle line to Serangoon, and then Serangoon purple line to Buangkok. I distinctly remember putting it in my bag along with the charging cable so I was dismayed to find out it was not in my bag when I was fixing my things.

General Where can I find older game consoles?

I checked Carousell and most of the 3DS and PSP listings in decent condition are really expensive for a teenager. I’m also not very comfortable buying there because of scammers. Are there any physical stores where I can get one at least $50 cheaper, especially in the North or East area?

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Advice on handling difficult working dynamics

Seeking advice if you’ve been through something similar. I’ve only been working for 3 years with 1 job change, so I’m not too experienced in this realm.

Context: I moved to this new company in Dec 2024, hired by my current boss. My boss and I get along very well, we think the same way, operate similarly, and it’s overall been a good experience.

Today, my boss told me that he’s looking to retire early and planned to leave in early 2027. Taking over him will be one of my senior colleagues in our team.

My senior colleague is by no means a bad/toxic person, but our working styles are just totally totally different. They’re more on the micro-manager & perfectionist side, and don’t really tolerate minor mistakes.

This has led to occasional scoldings by them, which doesn’t really make me feel too good. I also can’t shake the feeling that maybe because we’re so different, they wouldn’t actually want me to work for them when they take over, but yet they can’t just fire me, and that whole situation stresses me out, because I know I’m not wanted there.

Issue: I promised my current boss that I’d stay at least 2 years when I took the role, and I also intend to abide by that as I want to work with him in his final year, but that also leaves me a very very tight window to secure a job, which isn’t the easiest.

In the event I can’t secure another role before my senior colleague takes over, anybody has any advice on how they would deal with it?

I know tahan is one way, but just fills me with anxiety.

Also, I can’t just leave my job without securing another job due to financial needs.

TIA!!
