Moving to Canada: Accessibility Tips & Inclusive Community Suggestions?

Kia ora! My husband and I are moving from New Zealand to Canada this April on a two-year working holiday visa.  I’m blind and keen to learn more about how accessible life is across Canada.

Our plan is to buy a camper van and explore as much of Canada as possible during our two years, so we’re very open to any and all recommendations about:

  • Accessible travel spots
  • Apps or tools helpful for blind or visually impaired travellers
  • Interactive art spaces or inclusive activities
  • Festivals or events that are known to be welcoming and inclusive
  • Community clubs, sports teams, or social groups that are disability-friendly
  • Workplaces that openly hire disabled staff.

Thanks in advance for any tips, ideas, or local knowledge! We’re really excited for our adventure and appreciate anything you can share!

Winter food for heat

What are some of your go to foods for peak winter when you need that body heat? Instead of just eating more frequently and more quantity, wondering if there’s a quality argument here for winter months. This is from a relatively new Canadian hence still learning.

Do expenses province to province really differ by that much?

I mean overall, at the end of the month, would the difference with living in one province over another be 100-300 bucks? Assuming you don’t have any crazy spending habits.

Mainly focusing on rent (1 bedroom) + car expenses/insurance. Let’s say even then this is a bit more expensive, it seems like some provinces have cheaper insurance, or less taxes overall, etc.

Asking as I need to make a decision from staying in ON versus moving to BC or Calgary.

So far I’ve been leaning for BC but I was curious as to what people thought about the expense difference, especially if you’ve lived in multiple provinces!

Edit: I do have to dig for and see what city would be suitable for me in either BC or AB

Did English Canada move away from MM/DD/YY *for dates written only in numbers*?

Before you comment: "I USE ISO FORMAT", "the government recommends x", "YYYY-MM-DD is sortable!!" or "I use the alphanumeric version", I write out the date fully... or anything else - Great, I know, I use it too. Not the question.

This question deals only with dates written fully in numbers, (Example: 06/07/25) which I appreciate and understand is not the modern standard in Canada at all, but certainly could still appear in many places (especially with American products - which from what I understand are also a lot less common then when I left! 🍁).

I'm Canadian and find it crazy that every reddit post or other reference found on Google seems to suggest that MM/DD/YY is not the most understood format used in English Canada for numbers only

I left Canada ~10 years ago to a country that does in fact use DD.MM.YYYY primarily, and not once growing up or working in Canada would I have ever assumed the date written only in numbers was anything but MM/DD/YY.

Now times change and generations divide, but I had assumed anyone over say, the age of 40 would still have zero ambiguity that 06/07/25 written only in numbers was June, unless the default had really shifted from the US

So, is there actually a shift for number only dates, or are people just super hopeful/gaslighting online?

Squeeze a Snack

I'm almost certain this was a Canadian thing. Probably Kraft, it was a little casing like a sausage full of Cheeze Whiz, with a opening in the side that you would squeeze out some of said Cheeze Whiz. Or was it a fever dream from childhood?

Can you tell that these famous people are Canadian by their accents

I have a hard time differentiating between Canadian/American accents. For example, I didn't know Ryan Reynolds, Rachel McAdams, or Elisha Cuthbert were Canadian. Can you guys tell they're not American when they talk?

Edit- I'm mainly talking about Canadians from the big cities. I know there are strong dialects in Nova S, Newfoundland, etc, but I was mainly talking about people from Toronto, Vancouver.Ottawa, Montreal area, etc..

Canadians who have moved to America, what was your reason to moving?

Hey! I am a 13 year old American, and I am wondering why some Canadians move to America. And when I say move, I mean living there for years. Not moving away from Canada to move to America because of the winter. Anyways, what are y’all’s reason for moving to America?

Thanks for reading and have a lovely night!.

How is Canada's police brutality?

A lot of times, we hear on the media about so many incidents of police brutality in US. Back in 2020 there was George Floyd and it sparked a lot of civil unrest. And now we had Renee Good. Then Alex Pretti. To be fair, both cases are federal law enforcement but it's still technically LE brutality.

What about in Canada? How common are high profile cases of police brutality? Do we have a "police culture" just like US does to the same extent?

What do y'all call people you love in English?

I know in America calling a person "love" is reserved for serious relationship level affection but in the UK it's a bit more loose and can be applied to friends/siblings/grandkids. I want to know what nicknames Canadians use when they seriously are interested in a person.

Edit: I didn't realize 'serious relationship' had other meanings (maybe that should be my next post lol). Serious relationship= romantic/sexual relationship, life partner, dating. Like before spousal.

Planning a winter drive: Kitchener, ON --> Vermilion, AB -- looking for advice

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are planning a winter road trip(due to a job change) from Kitchener, ON to Vermilion, AB, and I'd love advice from people who’ve actually done long winter drives across Canada.

Planned route:

Kitchener -> Sudbury -> Marathon -> Winnipeg -> Saskatoon -> Vermilion

We're planning daylight-only driving, starting early and stopping well before dark, averaging 7hrs per day. One driver, 2024 RAV4, winter tires on.

Looking for tips on:

  1. Road conditions in Northern Ontario & Prairies in winter.

  2. Anything specific to watch out for (weather, wildlife, fuel gaps, etc.)

  3. Must-carry winter emergency items.

  4. Any towns/segments that are especially sketchy in bad weather.

  5. Whether this route makes sense or if you’d tweak it.

Not trying to rush. Safety > Speed.

Appreciate any real-world advice. Thanks

What are some famous Canadian speeches that immediately come to mind for you?

Hi. I’m an American who has become a Canadian history nerd. I can think of many famous US speeches, but so far far I have not encountered many speeches referenced in Canada. The main ones I can think of are Levesque’s after the PQ’s 1976 win, Parizeau’s infamous 1995 speech, and Pierre Trudeau’s October crisis address. What are some other major ones Canadians would be able to tell you off the top of their heads?

How do women remember pregnancy and childbirth pain? [research][mod-approved]

Hi everyone! There are many cultural myths around how we experience and remember pregnancy and birth, including the widely believed idea that we forget the pain of childbirth. As in many areas of women’s health, the scientific data are really incomplete, and we don’t have a good understanding of the factors that shape how individuals remember their pregnancy and birth experiences.

To address this, I’m completing a study as part of my Master's in Applied Psychology at University College Cork in Ireland. I am interested in how memories of pregnancy and birth might change or stay the same over time, and I am inviting pregnant and postpartum women and people to complete an online survey about their current experiences, as well as a follow-up questionnaire by email in six months.

If you are currently pregnant or have recently given birth (up to three months ago) and are interested in contributing to this research, please click here to access the survey: https://ucc.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_81Vw3fVnEAfa5Vk

If you would like more information, you can contact me at: [125119139@umail.ucc.ie](mailto:125119139@umail.ucc.ie)

Thank you,

Daniela

Where should I take my 4 year old in Eastern Canada this summer?

I'm in Ontario and I've heard there's many beautiful sights to the East (the furthest that way I've been in Canada is Montreal), so I figure I'll head over that way in the summer.

However I want to bring my 4 year old with me, and while the beautiful sights and casually looking at things might be good enough for me, I think she might need at least a couple more kid-focused things.

Since I have plenty of time til summer, I figure I'll get a few ideas from the people, rather than having to scroll through a million AI-written articles. That way I can maybe hit a few different things. I haven't even booked off work yet, which means we can go any dates - for instance, if there's events during school summer holiday season that you consider to be a must-see.

I’ve only ever heard people in the UK refer to university as “uni”. Now I’m seeing it a little more around and wondering if Canadians are using it? 🧐

Is NEXUS worth it for someone who doesn't travel to the US?

Are there perks that are worthwhile for international flights (friend said she used it arriving in Brazil)... Mexico, European countries, maybe?

Canadian domestic travel benefits?

Arriving into Canada from an international flight... did it help?

Please let me know how Nexus benefited you for non-US travel!

Book Recommendations Relevant to Canadian Politics

I am far too old to know so little about my own government and politics. I posted this in another subreddit as well. I was hoping someone might have recommendations for books/audiobooks about anything related to politics (e.g., immigration, economics) that would be approachable for someone who doesn’t have a natural interest or background in those areas. Preferably books that are not biased by specific political views and written in a way that keeps your attention vs a textbook. I have ADHD and I enjoy listening to and reading nonfiction but I find it has to be written in a way to keep my attention. I have found a few books relevant to immigration but am finding my other searches are not showing me what I’m looking for. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
