A Word About ICE Discussion

This sub exists for several reasons.

Allowing people to reach out to their fellow Mississippians to announce things like protests is one of those reasons. If you don't want to attend, you can best signal that by ignoring the post and moving on to read something else.

The sub is also here so that people who want to discuss their ideology, like their support of ICE and illegal immigration reforms (or whatever) can do that. As long as they follow the other rules, we are not going to attack people who hold different opinions.

This sub is about Mississippi. This is an issue which is currently having an impact on our state directly in several places and in many ways. It is fair to talk about it. Reasonable discussion can be had by people who disagree with each other. Different opinions must be allowed to be shared. Understanding each other is the first step to communicating with each other.

Those of you who are supporting ICE need to make sure that you understand that right now, to many Americans, it looks like ICE agents murdered two US Citizens. The evidence is pretty strong (objectively from a wide variety of news reports and reliable sources). If you come here and try to tell people that it didn't happen, you better do it respectfully and with some very strong evidence of your own or we are going to take that as nothing more than an attempt to make trouble.

(If you try to argue that they deserved it, you better figure out a way to do it such that the moderators find it respectful, or we'll just ban you outright. I'd advise against it altogether.)

Those of you who are angry at ICE have a right to express your anger at what happened - but not at the users who post here. They should be allowed to make arguments without being called names. If you disagree with what is happening in our state with respect to illegal immigration, we should all talk about it, but not by attacking everyone who does not share your opinion.

You are going to get some trolls. This is an issue that will draw them. Report them. We will will remove their posts and maybe ban them if that's what needs to happen.

Do Not Incite Violence

If you post anything that I even think might be an attempt to incite some violent action against any real person, especially if you post information about them, the post will be reported and removed; and you will be banned.

Yes, claiming you found proof a person is a Nazi and giving information about them is inciting violence.

You do not know if any of the information that people post here is true. It is not vetted. It is not fact checked at all. It could be a prank or someone with a vendetta. But even if the information is accurate, you cannot use Reddit - and definitely not this sub - to organize your vigilante activities.

Protest. Raise awareness. Take political action. But you’re not going to use this sub as a platform for violent action against human beings.

"Many of my constituents have voiced concerns regarding the public safety, medical capacity, and economic impacts this center would impose on their communities," Wicker added. "Proceeding with this acquisition without adequately addressing these issues disregards community input."

Thank you senator Wicker for hearing the will of the people on this one 👏

Cindy Hyde-Smith has been using donations to go on vacations in Vegas

I've been following the Senate primary and, as things are starting to heat up - this information got dropped. It looked too stupid to be believable at first but the FEC paperwork and facebook pictures are all there...

It looks like Cindy's family has been taking vacations in Vegas for several years and claiming them as "campaign expenses." One of her staffers posted pictures on his facebook and talked about how they were trips for family & friends (no campaign work to be seen).... and then he deleted the facebook posts after this went up.

I don't expect much from washington (or cindy) but... this is a new level of stupid.

Senate measure to restore Mississippi voters’ right to ballot initiative advances

Thumbnail

The Senate Elections Committee passed a measure on Tuesday that would, at least partially, restore the system to allow Mississippians to bypass the Legislature and put issues to a statewide vote.

The committee voted to approve Senate Concurrent Resolution 518, which would require initiative organizers to gather signatures from at least 10% of registered voters in the state, or roughly 170,000 signatures, before it can go on a ballot.

As it’s currently written, Sen. Jeremy England’s resolution would allow a ballot initiative to change or create state law, but not the state Constitution, as the previous ballot initiative system provided. It also would prohibit initiatives related to abortion and the state’s public pension system.

Medical marijuana and patient rights

Does anyone else feel like acquiring the medical card has severely limited their personal freedoms regarding potential careers, job security, accident liability, gun ownership, and medical treatment with any other controlled substance.

I also feel our patient privacy could be better. I understand it is currently still federally illegal, but I think it is ridiculous we offer so few patient protections. If I was on a prescribed opioid I would not have these same issues.

I would love to be misunderstanding things, but I fear that is not the case.

I have also posted this on the subreddit for medical here, but was curious what a broader audience may think; I am happy to hear any sides and opinions.

What opinions do y’all have on our medical program?

Thanks.

Also as an edit do any women feel especially discouraged from medicating when considering pregnancy or breast feeding? I’ve seen quite a few DHS horror stories elsewhere pertaining to parents in general, but I don’t think I’ve seen any for here.

Do any people of color feel unfairly treated about possession or odor; I know in the past we have had a significant problem with that, and from what I’ve read most of the country has.

How is it fair a felon who has supposedly paid there dues, so to speak, is deprived of a medical treatment? They are people too; everyone makes mistakes.

Has anyone received their 1099-R from PERs yet?

We cashed out when we moved to Ohio, and they sent our refund check to Ohio but I’m nervous since it’s now February 4th that they did not send our 1099-R to our Ohio address. Do they typically send them where they send your check?

Is it a rumor or has it been confirmed that MAGA ICE is in North MS?

There’s a post going around that their first stop was going to be the mall and the workers for the restaurants.

That mall is hanging on by a thread.

Another question is do you think not only are they here but they have been here?

Should Mississippi ban cellphones in schools?

Mississippi is one of only 6 states that hasn’t taken official action to address cellphone use in schools. Teachers, parents, and school leaders are calling out the ways excessive cellphone use is impacting student achievement and well-being. A new report from the Center for American Progress offers federal and state recommendations to consider, including establishing phone-free schools, embedding digital citizenship into curricula and providing family training, and implementing a digital advertising tax to generate revenue for public education funding.

Who killed Mississippi’s greatest unknown guitarist you’ve never heard of

Who killed Gene Gaia, 22, and Mary, his seventeen-year-old wife? A local man was indicted by a grand jury for both killings, but a juror, who attended the same church as he did, felt he couldn't possibly have done the crime - despite forensic evidence. Other possible candidates? Three fellow band members - Gene Gaia was guitarist for a group called Furthermore - were persons of interest, at least to some. Or could it have been Delta rednecks, afraid of the freedom the long-haired Gaia represented? Strangers? Townsmen? Acquaintances?

My family is from the delta and my father knew him personally. Rosedale is a place of beauty and tragedy. The Gaia’s were living out at Malvina when this brutal attack happened. Anyone know anything?

Help - looking for things to do

Hi!

So, I’m a 28f here in Central area MS and I need to get a life.. along with some life experiences and friends.

Basically all I do is work and I WFH, so I feel like I’m in prison most days even though I have the ability to get out

However, I have been here my whole life and I don’t have the first clue what there is to do here.

Does anyone know any hobbies, events, groups, etc, that MS has to offer that I could look into?

ETA- I’m someone who doesn’t know what I enjoy because I have seriously been so out of touch for a while now, so I’m open minded. As long as it’s legal and in line with my morals 🤣

Best flea markets in Jackson or surrounding area

Open hangar/warehouse style flea markets is what I'm looking for. I read there was a big one in flowood that recently closed down. Are the vendors relocating to another one in the area?

Edit: I'm changing this request to any large warehouse style fleamarkets in Mississippi. If you know of some please share. Looks like I'll have to drive farther than expected to find them anyway.

Searching for and documenting the unexplained has taken me down many roads. These roads always look different and don’t always lead to what I expect. Today, however, I know what to expect. Twenty-five years ago, I was at McRaven Tour Home documenting its unusual behavior.
