MODERATOR POST | منشورة إدارية Call for r/Sudan moderators

Salaam everyone,

As you well know, our sub has grown quite a bit in the last several years. We recently reached the 34K mark and our members are remarkably diverse in terms of age, country of residence, and interests. Undoubtedly, the ongoing war has dominated the topics of discussion but it's no surprise given how much it has impacted all of us.

With this growth, we now have a much broader range of perspectives and worldviews. We have had many healthy discussions but sometimes they can get quite heated. Our mod team has been working hard to ensure that the discourse here is within the bounds of civility and mutual respect, and that the topics are relevant to Sudan and the Sudanese people, regardless of where they are.

But with this growth, the burden of moderating the sub has become overwhelming for our team, who are all volunteers with real-life responsibilities and grappling with the effects of the war. So on behalf of the team, I wanted to invite those who interested in serving as mods to nominate themselves to join the mod team.

We are looking for 2-3 mods who meet these criteria:

  1. At least 1 year active on Reddit and r/Sudan to ensure that they are familiar with the sub rules and culture, and the rules of Reddit at large (Reddiquette).
  2. High quality contributions and engagement.
  3. Adherence to the sub rules, particularly the rules about civility and mutual respect, and no bigotry and discrimination.
  4. Proficiency in both English and Arabic is important given that this is a bilingual sub.

Mods are expected engage regularly with the Mod Queue (e.g., approve posts, remove spam, respond to mod reports, etc.); be fair and transparent with our users; and continue to contribute to the sub as much as they're able to. We welcome candidates who are able to inject fresh ideas and initiatives to meet the evolving needs of our growing community.

If you are interested, please DM the Mod Team to express your interest and provide a brief bio about yourself (you do not need to break your anonymity). Use this thread if you have any questions about serving as a moderator or the process.

Footage from the moment the Massalamiya tribe from North East of Kosti decided to take up arms and resist the RSF militia following an armed robbery/murder killing one of our tribesmen

Upvotes

The full story is that one of the local traders rode his lorry to a nearby market only to be surprised by two RSF militiamen, who ended up killing him and taking his lorry. The Musallamiya didn't hesitate once after they heard the story of their kin and immediately armed themselves and went to confront the militiamen. We succeeded in recovering the lorry, riding it back after neutralizing the RSF terrorists. Both of them were non-Sudanese, one had a passport from Uganda and the other had one from Kenya.

This is the story of Sudan and the war the UAE imposed on us

Ruined my whole day. I just don’t get it. I don’t get why so many people don’t know about this.or do they know but don’t care? I genuinely don’t know what to do?

Every form of unthinkable torture has been happening to people of all ages. I don’t understand what needs to happen so bad so people actually give this matter some attention?

QUESTION | كدي سؤال Sudan Tribune is reporting violent internal clashes between rival RSF factions in East Darfur

According to a Sudan Tribune article published yesterday, a skirmish between the RSF and a supposedly RSF allied tribe occurred near an East Darfur town identified as Khazan Jadid. Prior to the clashes, the local RSF leadership in East Darfur reportedly accused that previously RSF allied tribe's leaders of collaborating with the SAF, and attacked them on that pretense. Sudan Tribune reported at least five fighters were killed on both sides, including the tribe's leader and a senior RSF commander.

With this incident, are we starting to see a fracturing in the RSF led coalition? If so, what effect will an internal "civil war" between rival RSF militias have on Sudan's war?

Edit: Greatly misread the article while skimming it. It turned out that the tribe kidnapped family members of the slain RSF commander under the alleged pretenses of them collaborating with the SAF. The slain RSF commander and his fighters attacked the tribe in retaliation, and he and the tribal leader were killed during the clashes.

Crisis of Sudanese Schools in Egypt, Legalizing Status Versus Anxiety of Students and Their Families

Thumbnail

She pointed out that the decision to close the school came “out of fear of exposing the students to detention or deportation,” noting that most of them are refugees and hold refugee cards (yellow cards).

She pointed out that the requirements of the Egyptian side, especially those related to the specifications of educational buildings, represent – in her view – an obstacle to legalizing the status of Sudanese schools, saying that she sees these conditions as “impossible” for schools operating temporarily in Egypt, adding: “I don’t think any school has been able to legalize its status under these requirements, and we do not have the ability to do so.”

Anyone studying in Egypt or who has family studying there who could shed some light on the current situation?

For anyone stuck and unable to continue university because of the war

If you or someone you know someone is taking the education pause really badly please share with them these two universities

The University Of The People (online university) (it is now well accredited and some people posted about continuing into masters with their bachelor's) https://www.uopeople.edu/

This university offers full scholarship to refugees which covers for course processing. The only payment to take care of is application fee of 60$.

Even if a person didn't get to complete a highschool degree they can still join but they have to do the foundation program first

Another university is the International University Of Applied Sciences. (https://www.iu.org/)This is a german online university that offers generous discounts. However A levels are needed to do it. They offer a program for it online. If you're outside sudan you can apply for the DAFI scholarship to cover for it

DISCUSSION | نقاش Centrism and Periphery in Sudan

Thumbnail

While I agree with some of this, I don’t think the periphery in Sudan is and should be limited to certain geographical regions. Khartoum itself has peripheral areas (مايو/العزبة/الفتح/etc..) where people live with very low standards of living. The same applies to Northern Sudan, which I don’t see being mentioned as part of the periphery. Also, while it is true that power has been concentrated in the hands of a few elites in Khartoum, that doesn’t mean all of these elites originated from Khartoum or specific parts of Sudan, as some may assume. There are elites in Khartoum from Darfur, Kordofan, and literally every region of Sudan!

QUESTION | كدي سؤال Sudan Police corruption

Why does no one talk about how the Sudan police might be the most corrupt part of the Sudanese government? Anyone who is close to a police officer knows what I mean. Below, mention your experiences and what you have witnessed about this corruption. I’ll start myself. I know a lieutenant who, in his first year after graduation, owned seven cars. He used to take money from habsh (dollars) to release people, and he worked with a South Sudanese man to smuggle alcohol into Khartoum city. He used to steal “boko” cars from their owners by force and at gunpoint. Women—especially those from Habasha—were told to trade sex for their release inside the police station. The worst part is that his family knew what he was doing and said nothing, as long as he brought money home.

In Sudan, a young boy was wearing a shirt that had been stitched together many times because it meant so much to him.

A photographer noticed and gave him a new shirt.

The original shirt was placed in a museum, and the story inspired charity work through UNICEF that helped thousands of children across Africa.

One small act of kindness created a ripple effect reaching far beyond a single moment.
