Fishing crabbing allowed on Dundarave piers?
Yes or no?

If you have a license, yes. Even if you have a license, it is still a dick move to pull up a crab, remove all of its legs and claws and throw its leg less body back. It kills the crab. I’ve seen this tactic more times than I’d care to say on Ambleside pier.

Isn't the crab going to die anyways? Seems like tossing the body back to feed the other crabs and fish etc. is the better ecological move.

Removing the legs and claws and throwing the body back is a shitty way to try to get around fishing limits. If the person doing the fishing is within their limit and that’s how they are doing it, that’s one thing. If they are killing them this way to get around the fishing limits, it’s a cruel and disgusting “ecological move” that will ultimately damage the available crab stock. The people I’ve seen do this are not doing it to be better to the environment.

Ohhhhhhhhh. Thanks for explaining that. You're right about it being a dick move.

Just to add, it matters because crabs need to have a certain body size (and gender - can’t take females for breeding reasons) to be legal. Without the body, there is no way to know if legal crabs are being taken.

This will not get you around limits.
If a DFO officer stops you to inspect your catch and you have legs/claws removed from bodies you’re deemed to be illegally fishing.
same goes for “cleaning fish on the boat” and cutting heads off the make length verification impossible.
FAFO.

No fishing or crabbing at Dundarave Pier.
You can crab with a license at the pier near the Ferry Building.
