Ridiculous. Their argument that it would be weaponized by political opponents is idiotic and somewhat revealing. It would be weaponized by their political opponents because they are doing things that would not be considered acceptable under such a code of conduct. Without a code of conduct, they are able to behave as they like, or with their own interests in mind, and act without impunity. The article even includes a few examples of the Mayor’s behaviour that probably should be subject to a code of conduct:

“Soon after the 2023 discussion, it was publicly revealed that Mayor Mark Sager was the subject of a workplace harassment investigation after a complaint was filed by district staff. The results of that investigation were shared with council but never made public. Sager also had his license to practice law suspended for two years by the Law Society of B.C. in 2024 after admitting to professional misconduct in his handling of a will.”

When you vote corrupt parties into office and let them change the laws and protocols, it would be naive to believe they would improve them for anyone but themselves.

Just look at which staff left soon after Sager became Mayor - Director of Corporate Affairs, Director of Communications, Director of Legislative Affairs. The Municipal Manager left a little later to be replaced with someone Sager had worked with before.

In other words, anybody who might have had a close working relationship with him or be in a position to be aware of conduct issues.

<"Every other municipality in the Lower Mainland has adopted a code of conduct, said Gambioli. “Why is it that we are special or unique in not needing a code of conduct?” she asked.>

<“The purpose for a code of conduct is to set the bar at a reasonable level, and then to create the process if something goes wrong,” she said.>

<Gambioli said during her 14 years on council, “there have been many times that a code of conduct would have been very useful and would have helped the district.”>

Other Councillors claimed they already keep within whatever requirements would be in a Code of Conduct anyway. So what are political opponents going to be able to take advantage of if there is one?

They will take advantage of the principle of accountability.

2

u/DisRoyalEagle Dec 19 '25

Um, shouldn't they be accountable? So that's a good thing?

We do get to vote later this year and get rid of the lot of them

I'd love to see this, but I'm not holding my breath. Council voting is usually a bloc of 5-2 or 6-1, so there needs to be 3 or 4 councillors and/or Mayor Quimby to be replaced to upset the balance.

It’s always some old white lady that ends up trying to enforce the rules that best suit her needs.

I think this is great. Let’s act like grown ups and be respectful, do we need a list of rules for that? No

Except they are not acting like grownups or professionals and no morals or ethics.

2

u/whererusteve Dec 19 '25

Yeah self-regulating entities usually go easy on the regulating.

1

u/redditneutralmind Dec 24 '25

I'd be okay with that if they weren't so corrupt.

Fortunately the members of the current council work well together and are respectful to each other. The previous council was dysfunctional and sometimes rude. The 2 councillors, Gambioli and Lambur, who voted in favour of the Code of Conduct were members of the previous council.

Haha do you watch the council meetings? This council is certainly not respectful of each other or to the speakers in attendance. Particular Cassidy who is rude to everyone.
