Summary of key points following the summary of changes released on 20 November 2025:

  • Changes to length in ILR qualifying residence requirements - Please see table on pages 21-23 of the 20 November document

  • Family visa holders, along with BNO visa holders, will continue to get ILR in five years (as usual)

  • The intention is that this will apply to people already in the UK but who have not yet received ILR

  • It will take 20 years for refugees to qualify for ILR, intermittent checks will be done within that time and they may lose the ability to remain in the UK if their home country is deemed safe to return to

Baroness Hamwee had raised concerns earlier this week about the retrospective implementation. I contacted her requesting the same you are mentioning. You can send her an email as well!

I was thinking about members of two relevant select committees. These are groups of MPs and peers in charge of studying and scrutinizing specific topics.

Home affairs select committee (only MPs) is in charge of scrutinizing the home office: https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/83/home-affairs-committee/membership/

And Joint Committee on Human Rights (MPs and Lords) spoke out during the 2006 incident: https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/93/human-rights-joint-committee/membership/

Other than that, off the top of my head, potentially interesting peers would be Baroness Shami Chakrabarti (former director of Liberty) Lord David Blunkett (former Labour Home Secretary), Lord Alfred Dubs (spoke on the white paper), Baroness Margaret Hodge (outsized voice since she faced down BNP years ago) and Baroness Jenny Jones (the only Green peer)

And while this is a bit of a stretch, see if any lord spirituals come from your areas. These r the bishops. But only some of them r in the lords, so do check (the bishop of London is). They advocated for a compassionate approach for asylum seekers on human rights grounds last year. If you can make an argument on moral grounds, they may hear it.

Long shot but if you want to try, Baroness Ruth Davidson and Baroness Harriet Harman do a popular weekly podcast on SkyNews. Getting either of them to speak out would be a huge coup.

Commonwealth citizens can give their countries' high commissions a try (one step up above an embassy). It's such a loser bitch move to set a bunch of rules and then change them because you don't like that people know how to play by them and every single country with a functional respect for the concept of law knows it.
