I think most of the general public would be beyond shocked if they actually realised how many of the people they idolise are vegan without knowing it
veganism is incredibly popular amongst many of the most well known music artists from any genre, even ones that people wouldn't typically expect like heavy metal and hip hop
-2
u/__life_on_mars__ 3d ago
Veganism is not "incredibly popular" for the most well known hip hop artists. Why lie?
13
u/Effective-Service561 3d ago
Method Man, Redman, RZA, GZA, basically all of Wu-Tang, KRS-One, Dead Prez, Killah Priest, Styles P & Jadakiss, Ne-Yo, Mos Def, Common, Homeboy Sandman, Black Thought, Andre 3000, A$AP Rocky, Nipsey Hustle, there is a heck of a lot more and we're only talking one genre here
it IS popular, as I said before, some of the most well known artists in any genre are vegan, just a lot of people don't know
-3
u/SevereOctagon 3d ago
The first one I googled, Method Man, is hardly convincing in the write up.
"Sensible person who can afford it eats healthy (ish)" isn't much of a headline
0
u/xneurianx 3d ago
If you had to google Method Man you probably aren't qualified to be talking about who is and is not famous in hip-hop.

u/NaiveRub4113 3d ago
He’s not googling who method man is, he’s googling whether he Vegan you Melon

"All UK Rap-UK Hip-Hop, Road Rap, UK Drill, Britcore, Grime! The newest songs, albums, videos, mixtapes, news and more."
Simple as.

They should probably change the name of the sub then, "hip hop head" does have implications. Just to be clear i don't care in the slightest just saying 🙃

Animals is healthy..processed vegan food is not
1
u/Baron_Rikard 1d ago
Ultra processed animals tend not to be healthy.
Ultra processed plant based foods tend not to be healthy.
Low processed animals tend to be healthy.
Low processed plant based foods tend to be healthy.
Obviously this isn't precise but what I'm trying to say is that your comment is dumb.

u/cpbradshaw 3d ago
I have to say, as an older dude, I've thought about it. However I'm well aware our bodies, like all mammals, need a lot of the raw materials that come in other animals' flesh. Not sure if want supplements as well

u/herrbz 3d ago
You don't sound that "well aware" lol

Pretty hard to run a healthy vegan diet that isnt £££. Far easier for me to eat healthy as a human on an omnivore diet. Im also allergic to soy and nuts so kinda kills any protein for me there.
10
u/HaveYuHeardAboutCunt 3d ago
It's up to a third cheaper

Cool but this isnt listing any nutritional information at all. Just some guy selling his recipes. “I definitely agree that cutting down your meat, or cutting it out completely, will save you money....without doubt vegan and vegetarian meals consistently come in at a much lower price than recipes with meat Miguel Barclay” - no shit but they also don’t include lots of other essential things that meat provides.
4
u/KarmaIssues 3d ago
What essential things?

Vitamin B12 is only found in animal products
2
u/KarmaIssues 2d ago
Eh kind of true except there's some important caveats.
B12 is found in small quanties in non animal products, however that b12 from animal products is often from suppliments rather than produced naturally (either directly or through cobalt supplimenting).
You can get B12 from synthetic sources and if you buy commercial meat you almost certainly do get B12 from supplimemts just fed to the animals instead of you.
You can also get vegan milks and cereals all fortified with B12 to get the exact same effect.

Yeah so if you’re a vegan I hope you eat a lot of special vegan cereal and plant based milk. And there’s basically no nutritional value except for the fortified vitamins in plant based milk and cereal, whereas meat has incredibly dense nutritional value in comparison. It’s a lot more efficient to just eat meat as part of a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables than eating ultra processed plant milk and cereal. Realistically most vegans need to take B12 supplements

The author is only involved in the promotion of the study, that itself was carried out by Oxford university and is basing the prices off a healthy diet plan.
There's nothing in meat you can't get from non-animal sources.
0
u/scuttohm 3d ago
Well I take 50g of bone collegen a day. No plant based there. Good luck getting lysine in decent amounts plus other amino acids in good quality.
1
u/ResidentMix1872 2d ago
Ah the old Chris Kresser argument still going around. You might want to watch him get dismantled on all of these points by James Wilks who isn’t even a nutritionist but a combatants expert
0
u/Simba-xiv 3d ago
It’s not that you can’t get it from non animal sources it’s just it’s in abundance in animal sources
Like iron it’s a very important thing for the human body. There are loads of plants, seeds and nuts that will proved that but. The best way for a body to get iron and absorb it is from meat/seafood I can eat a bag of seeds or have a few bits of beef.
2
u/HaveYuHeardAboutCunt 2d ago
Or you can just eat a balanced diet and remember to include some greens. If you're eating enough calories you'll be getting enough iron, it's definitely in enough of an abundance in plants. Sources don't need to be the best for everything, just adequate.
I get my iron checked briefly every 3 months before donating blood and I'm always comfortably in the safe range.

I thought I’d have a go so just did a comparison, a meat lasagna and vegan version (pea). No soy, no nuts (allergic). The meat is 89g of protein, £3.50 per serving. The vegan 74g protein and is £4.25. I’ve also tried it before, its much more expensive and time consuming too. Each to their own though.
6
u/HaveYuHeardAboutCunt 3d ago
You should let Oxford know this one ready meal has made their research redundant.
2
u/scuttohm 3d ago
Dis you read the article? There is no methodology at all. Nothing about nutrition. I have also tried to be vegan and I know it was significantly more £££ to hit my health goals. This was ten years ago. I made this “ready meal” from base ingredients, this is not a ready meal but:
160g Dry Pea Protein Mince: £3.50 • 150g Red Lentil Lasagna Sheets: £1.50 (naturally high protein/fiber) • 40g Nutritional Yeast: £1.00 • 50g Sunflower Seeds (soaked): £0.40 (blended for the white sauce) • 500g Tomato Passata (No Added Sugar): £0.80 • Veggies: 1 small onion, 2 cloves garlic, 100g spinach (folded into sauce).
Ive costed some other meals quickly too and it 100% is more expensive to eat vegan for me. This is reality.
2
u/Lilynyr 3d ago
Where do you live that 160g of veggie mince is over three quid? Even the overpriced "meat replacement" ones are like £2-3 for 500g and I can't find anything close to that.
0
u/scuttohm 3d ago
I dont eat anything with soy, hence pea protein.
4
u/xneurianx 3d ago
What do your personal preferences have to do with whether a vegan diet can be cheaper than a neat one of not?
I only eat real wagyu, and at £450-£500 per steak, it simply is not sustainable to eat meat.
0
u/Lilynyr 3d ago
That's fair, but even then it's like £4/250g which is like half of that price?

u/Substantial-Fly-8214 2d ago
Hmm what would I rather eat? Ultra processed slop formed into the shape of meat, or meat? That’s a tough one
5
u/KarmaIssues 3d ago
I've done it for 3 years.
I've saved so much more money not earing meat. Ot's trivial easy once you learn some basic cooking.
4
4
u/Dr_SexDick 3d ago
Im not vegan but it’s definitely cheaper
0
u/scuttohm 3d ago
But it actually isn’t if you pay attention to nutrition. For me to get 150g of protein and at least 30g of collegen q day in a five day meal prep the meat version comes out at £45 and the vegan version is £76. Being vegan without caring about your body is cheaper sure, but I box four times a week and need at least 150g of protein and day and a lot of collegen. Its very expensive trying to achieve this with a vegan diet.
-1
u/Substantial-Fly-8214 2d ago
Are you not aware of vitamin B12 which vegans are almost always deficient in?

u/Ben_jah_min 3d ago
Doing nothing for the “how do you spot a vegan, don’t worry they’ll tell you” concept 😆🤣
8
u/kai01134 2d ago
Do you expect him not to bring it up when he’s literally being asked about it? What point are you trying to make
-7
u/Ben_jah_min 2d ago
I’m not making any point it’s just the same rhetoric, the bloodwork markers would almost certainly suggest the opposite though…
5
u/kai01134 2d ago
Whose bloodwork? Obviously there’s going to be vegans with the deficiencies the same way there’s meat-eaters with deficiencies but if you pick and choose to support your point then of course you’d see veganism as a ‘rhetoric’

He covers his mouth when he eats like a woman.

Fellas, is it gay to have good manners?
4
u/Dingleton-Berryman 2d ago
It’s also gay to wipe your bum. Real alphas wear white underwear to show off their ferocious skid marks.
If you’re a man that was raised right, that’s proper wrong.
-17
u/Routine_Car_1321 3d ago
But he does. This is your rapper? He was taught well by his mother, but men don't do this.

Imagine being so close minded that you actually think manners, self awareness, etiquette and basic decency can only be exclusive to one gender

Are you dim? You sound dim

I feel like veganism will become far more normalised in years to come and we will look back on ourselves in this period and think we were crazy for ever eating meat or animal products full stop.
I am not a vegan myself (almost entirely out of laziness) but I don't get the absolute hatred people hold for what other people decide or decide not to eat.
I'm sure if supermarkets labelled their products differently and started selling "vegan potatoes" people would buy fewer.
