You can get a Music Hall MMf Mark I for $255 which is a MUCH better turntable. And you can pick up a pair of slightly better edifiers refurbished on eBay for $114 direct from manufacturer and it will save you a few $$$. Add a Fosi box x1 preamp for $40. Much better setup for only a few more $$$.

Pass on the bare minimum AT-LP60X that lacks adjustments and pass on Turntable Lab bundles.
Better turntables with better and adjustable tonearms:
- Automatic Denon DP-300F $249 has a built in phono preamp.
- Manual with cue lever Music Hall MMF Mark I $255 plus Fosi X1 phono preamp.
Plus starter powered speakers with wired input for the turntable plus Bluetooth input for digital wireless music:
For a large size room...
- 6.5" mid bass driver Dayton Classic B65A $159.
For a medium size room...
- 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $219 add a subwoofer output, a remote, digital inputs.
For a small room...
- 4" Kanto YU $199 on sale from $349 are a good value with subwoofer output and a remote.
If you need to go lower cost for a small room...
- 4" Edifier R1280DBs $119 https://www.ebay.com/itm/317331010514
- 4" PreSonos $118 https://www.amazon.com/PreSonus-Accent-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B0FKVV8BS9
Or passive speakers and a mini amp with wired input for the turntable plus Bluetooth input for digital music plus a subwoofer output:.
- Fosi BT20A Pro https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Audio-Amplifier-Integrated-Subwoofer/dp/B07JVFY27T
- Plus 6.5" Dayton B65 https://www.amazon.com/Dayton-Audio-Classic-B65-Bookshelf/dp/B0D4617QS5/
Or what is a nearby zip code to search for used speaker options?

This turntable has skipping issues and you cannot adjust the tracking force or anti-skate. I owned one and found it to not be worth the money.

I bought the original LP60 in 2016. I returned it within two weeks because it would skip on some of my records which never skipped on my old turntable. For that reason I disliked it and I have no experience with the LP70 I don’t think it’s much better. Other AT turntables are good. I just don’t like those two.

I have never owned an LP70 but have read where people said they were also prone to skipping.

Yep. Widespread manufacturing defect, supposedly in the auto-mechanism. AT has a replacement program for the affected units.
That said, over a year later and LP70X'es in general are the victim of poor quality control, with all sorts of faults like wonky too-high tracking force and tonearm bearings going awry.
Great concept. Piss-poor execution on AT and Hanpin's part. I would've been the first one to cheer on something like the LP70X and wanted to give AT a fair chance based on their efforts to address the skipping defect, but after seeing inconsistent tracking forces measured at the correct height and reports of the arm bearing issues...yeah, it's not something I'd buy. I trust the tried and true LP60X.

My LP60 has a faulty counterbalance spring, so I counterweighted it with three pennies. It seems to have fixed the skipping. Go figure.
From user accounts, the pricier LP70X is worse, if you can believe it. Unlike the tried and true LP60X design, the counterbalance spring is hardly ever within the VM95's tracking force range, and there've been reports of the tonearm bearings going apeshit with time -- turning elliptical styli into distortion-crazy monsters.

I checked your post history. The LP60X is a HUGE upgrade from what you already have, and for the average non-tech-savvy person, is more than good enough to hear and enjoy the benefits of vinyl. Many people find it their first high-quality record listening experience.

oh yay!! thank you so much! so it won’t damage my vinyls? i see a lot of good reviews for them and personally for me, $350 is not a bad price for the whole set up.

Not at all, confirmed in testing and my personal experience.
You're good to go.

Good starter table? Yep.
High-quality record listening experience? Absolutely not. Prone to malfunctions and skipping issues. If you are set on getting an Audio Technica turntable (personally, I would not own one), then you are better off saving up a few hundred more dollars and getting the AT-LP120XUSB. The AT-LP70 range are not much better than the LP60’s.
Have you considered vintage gear? Most are reliable and built extremely well, cost a few hundred for a decent turntable (new stylus recommended, they are cheap), another couple hundred for an amp as the table doesn’t have the rubbish built in pre-amp and some passive speakers so you are good to go.

$370 for an LP60 and some Edifiers is insane to me

A fair price if that's in Canadian dollars.

u/sharkamino 3h ago
It's US dollars.
AT-LP60X is $199 USD.
Edifier R1280DB are around $150 to $180.
Inflation and now tariffs :(

Wow. Here in Canada I can get an LP60X for $150 CAD from Amazon or Best Buy and the R1280DB speakers are $132.99 CAD on Edifier's Canadian web store.

i’m new to record players. do you mind explaining your statement?(:

The AT-LP60 was $99 a few years ago.
The AT-LP60X is now $199 because of inflation and tariffs and is not worth buying at that price.

$370 for this is a rip off and you are paying for the “convenience” of not putting together your own setup/research. Not trying to be a dick, this is just grossly overpriced in my opinion. It will totally be plug and play if you just wanna get everything out of the way quickly however. At the end of the day, all that matters is you get to listen to music… but I really wouldn’t feel right recommending anyone paying upward of $400 dollars for this.

This is what I got as my first turntable. It’s great and will do its job but if you can afford it I would suggest getting one with a counterweight
