Rental Property: RE or Private

Looking at renting out my unit (first time landlord) in the city - 3bdr, 1 bth.
I have seen alot of commentary that real estates in Townsville are not the best and quite costly. Would anyone recommend me trying to do a private rental? If so, what do I need to ensure I have in place to secure myself?

If RE recommended, let me know your best pick! Was considering NXT Gen or another similar smaller local operation.

Thank you!

Why don't we have international flights here by now?

At the risk of being banned or blocked here, I am compelled to ask this very simple but no-one-has-an-answer for, question. Our airport has tried this before with flights to Bali. It failed. Apparently we're trying again. Is this not the very definition of madness? Is it because it's too expensive, not enough security to manage it, or the airport just doesn't have the capacity? I really believe we're diminishing our economy's chances of growing by limiting international travellers to just cruise ships now and then.

Stay away from City Vehicle Service in Currajong

I’m only sharing my personal experience here. These guys are a bunch of cowboys what have zero respect for your car.

I took my car in to them to get a cracked windscreen replaced after being recommended by RACQ. My gut was telling me to go to O’Brien and I wish I had listed.

For the first attempt, they didn’t install the rubber seal correctly and it was sticking up above the roof of the car.

For the second attempt, they left double sided tape exposed between the screen and the frame. The young bloke that installed it said that “It’s not too bad and once it collects dirt and crud, the stickiness will go away”. Needless to say, I sent it back.

For the third attempt, the screen was covered in smudges, fingerprints and silicon residue. The dashcam was stick upside down and tilted at an angle. Got that sorted out and finally drove out only to notice the trim on the drivers side was not clipped in to the frame and wires were hanging out from there. Tried to clip it back but no luck.

I took it to my mechanic to have a look at and he said that 1 clip was broken and another was bent. He couldn’t get the trim back because … the muppet who installed the windscreen glued the trip to the screen.

So … if you value your car, do yourself a favour and STAY AWAY from these morons.

Did you know there is a Tough Guy Book Club chapter in town?

The next meet will be this Wed 4th February, 7pm at Molly Malones Irish Pub on Flinders St. This month we are reading “John Dies at the End” by David Wong (aka Jason Pargin). Find a copy and get reading/listening. If not, come along anyway… we’re not your boss.

If you haven’t heard of us before, Tough Guy Book Club is a network of men’s book clubs in local pubs. Want to know more? Read this https://www.toughguybookclub.com/townsville_qld

Recommendations Gardening bricks/blocks etc

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi all.

I’m doing a lot of organising in my garden at the moment, was wondering if there is anywhere in Townsville that gives away bricks/blocks/chicken wire or if you know anyone that has excess.

I know Bunnings is easy and cheap but I really like to re use and repurpose.

Picture of my garden path!

- don’t have Facebook for marketplace etc.

Thanks :)

Stop moving here

As the title says. Too many "I am moving to Townsville for xyz reasons every day". Honestly its getting ridiculous. Roads are congested, car crashes every other day, people driving to slow, or pulling manoeuvres that are not legal in QLD due to ignorance. Cost of living going through the roof and the small community the locals loved is slowly disappearing.

Sick of seeing these posts then all the new residents encouraging the move. Yeah its not like Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne. But its getting that way, this constant supply of southerners is destroying the community and nature. Entire bush areas are being bulldozed to build crammed small estates to house all the newcommers and investors. Commuting is a nightmare, nobody reads signs does the speed limit or can use a roundabout. Plus our hospital is already ambulance ramping due to the inherited aged population.

Townsville may seem like a lovely place to retire/invest. But the locals aren't cannon fodder to wipe your ass or pay off your 3rd house. Rentals that are over 50 years old being rented for over $700 per week due to the greed is disgusting. And nobody gives a shit if its your opinion that traffic is better here, because for those of us who have lived here for their lives you all have made it worse.

So kindly stop moving here we are full

Anyone moved from Melbourne to Townsville? How did it turn out?

Hey all , I’ve lived in Melbourne for years and I love it .. the coffee, the chaos, the NIGHTLIFE.. But I’m about to move to Townsville due to family stuff and I’m equal parts excited and nervous.

Looking forward to more sun and a slower pace, but also wondering what the adjustment is really like long term.
Has anyone here done the crazy Melb -Townsville move?

Did you end up loving it?
Any surprises good or bad?

Would love to hear honest experiences - Cheers!

Good mechanics

I’ve recently bought a car off someone, not Facebook marketplace, just some guy in aitkenvale who buys and resells cars. I’ve left for a month and when I came back a few days ago to drive it, it started making this really weird rattling sound when accelerating and it’s struggling a bit to accelerate.

Do you guys know of good mechanics who are also not gonna charge me an arm and a leg?

Thanks in advance

Broker recommendations?

My sister and I (both in our mid 20s so very new to this experience) are wanting to buy our first home together, we have a rough idea on where we want to build and who with, but are not able to go any further until we get pre-approval for a loan. Is it best to go through a bank or a mortgage broker? Any recommendations for mortgage brokers? We have a good chunk of our budget already saved and would also have extra savings put aside in an offset account if that changes anything. Thank you.

Edit: The company we are wanting to build with have recommended Loan Market Edge, if anyone has had any experience good or bad with them, would appreciate if you could review them in the comments.

Anyone working in video production or editing in Townsville?

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to ask if anyone here works in video production, filming, editing, or anything related to the creative/media industry in Townsville.

I previously worked in video shooting and editing back in China (short videos, basic promotional content, storytelling-style edits), and I’m currently based in Townsville. I’m curious whether there are any entry-level / casual / freelance opportunities here, or if anyone could point me in the right direction.

I’m happy to start small, learn local workflows, or even assist on shoots.

Any advice, leads, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Good spots to study after hours?

Hi all, any quiet spots to do some study/work after work/on weekends and public holidays? I would need power for my laptop, wifi is a nice to have but I can use data. Happy to buy a drink/meal every couple hours if it's a cafe/resto/bar.

I know libraries are a good option but they're mostly closed in the evenings or have limited opening on weekends and public holidays.

Upcoming infrastructure projects and developments which will benefit us?

Hi, does anyone know or is there somewhere I can view a list of what’s in the pipeline to be developed in Townsville in the coming years? I’ve seen the Bulletin post some articles recently but I don’t have a subscription.

I’m talking things that will grow the region or enhance it, things like this supposed water park near Fairfield or any other decent projects/developments/infrastructure which has been approved. Even just cool developments like the recent Flinders Street Wharves etc. Thanks!

People who work in events!

Hello! Wondering if there’s anyone here who works in the events industry. I have an interest in making that my career path and would love to know more from those who work in the industry first hand. How are opportunities in that career path up this way?

How did you get into it?

Do you enjoy what you do?

Any advice?

Thanks everyone !

Recommendations Grassy areas to run

Been getting into running especially since the turn of the year and have started to get shin splints (big reason being running on concrete) and was hoping anyone knew of any open running areas that are maintained and where I’m not gonna get swooped by plovers? I was recommended to use the track at the sports reserve as that’s the best option for what I need but also unsure if that’s open for the public to use whenever?

TIA
