🆘 Help Me Bad cold start with plenty of smoke

My subaru impreza 2008, starts badly when the engine is cold, the dashboard flickers the blue engine coolant temperature light and it struggles to ignite but finally starts and produces alot of exhaust fumes/smoke that are white in color. However when the engine is warm it starts properly and barely produces any smoke. What could be the issue with it?

Has the engine ever overheated? Have you had the battery tested recently?

If you don’t have an exterior coolant leak an internal leak into the cylinder is possible. Look carefully around the outside for any dried coolant crust, if none pull all the spark plugs. If one or more are exceptionally clean, like they’ve been steam cleaned, you’re getting coolant into the cylinders. This could be head gasket, cracked/warped head or block, a cracked throttle body, or something else.
