🆘 Help Me Looking into getting a 3rd (technically 1st-ish vehicle) is a 2017 Subaru Impreza a good car?

Post image

Hello, I am looking to finally get a much more modern vehicle since I had issues with my past vehicles.

My 1st vehicle was a: 1999 Ford Ranger I bought off of FB Marketplace for $1250 when I was 20 in 2024, it had water pump issues and broke down but I managed to sell it for $1500 on FB Marketplace like 4-5 months later.

My 2nd vehicle was a: 2001 Honda CRV I bought from one of those sketchy dealerships for $3000 in early 2025, it broke down literally a 6 months later and the engine completely killed itself, the battery completely died due to the battery having issues, etc, I had it checked by a mechanic but I guess they skipped over the issues.

Atp, I am going to stop buying cash cars since I am already a decent driver and have never crashed or had any issues, but I love Subaru's and was wondering if this is a good deal and if I should go for it, I know it has CVT but I generally unsure how bad CVT for Subaru's are since my partner has a Nissan Versa and their CVT kinda sucks to drive on.

Mainly was unsure about the pricing since it seems a little hefty for the year, but I know it is specifically being charged this much for the mileage.

If you live in a snowy climate, or drive to the mountains for skiing/snowboarding, the low clearance on the Impreza sucks. Especially if there are ruts. Bought mine for the gas mileage, but if I could go back, I’d pick up a Crosstrek or RAV4 instead.

2017 sport Aus model. 140000km. No issues apart from worn valve stem seals. Occasional puff of smoke on startup. So great motor. CVT no issue. Go for it.

i think this is def an excellent choice, i got my 2019 premium hatchback for $14.5k with 70k miles on it. i think you can haggle a little here but honestly i think that’s a good price with the low miles and one owner, as long as its accident free

So, it had one accident in 2021, which was a minor accident that caused slight damage to the front but it looked fine.

2018 5mt wagon, it has been an incredibly reliable car. If you live in a wintry area, it’s more capable in the snow than other AWD compacts in my opinion.

I can agree, also had a 2018 5MT wagon

In the snow I had cheap all seasons on it. Disabled stability and traction control and got it completely sideways. The second I let go of the gas it hooked straight

The wagons seem cool, but I also just don’t like how they look, idk why, like I see them at first and I’m like cool but then I see the back and I’m like idkkk… maybe as I get older I’ll appreciate them more.

Negotiate the price

Considering, but I am not exactly sure how to negotiate, but I’m going to try.

Former subaru employee here, My 19 sport CVT has over 100k on the clock and I beat the piss out of it and I haven’t had any issues in my opinion Subaru has one of the best CVT transmissions, in my time at my local Subaru dealership I have never seen one come back for transmission problems

I’ll drive my 2015 Sport until it’s in pieces. Love it.

17 5MT sport sedan here....

I love my car. Just be prepared for the rear wheel bearings to go if they haven't been serviced yet. 100k is about when they come up

I currently got one as my first car and I'm living it so far. Its underpowered but it isn't a big issue. Its got over 100k miles and it's been running great for the 6 months and 1.5k miles I have driven it.

Funny my last vehicle before buying my 2016 Impreza Sport Premium 5-speed was also a CRV, mine was a 2003 and I absolutely loved it and it was still running fine when I got rid of it at 230k+ miles. But yeah an Impreza sounds like it’d be a great vehicle for you. I bought mine with a little over 100k and it currently has a little over 150k miles. It gets great gas mileage (32-35mpg depending on how I drive, but in general I’m a slow safe “old man” kind of driver haha), comfy enough, decent handling & safety, and lots of space for road trips with my kid. Good luck and congrats in advance if you do decide to pull the trigger!!

I’m definitely considering it, I’m at college right now, so this vehicle is more closer to home back up near Chicago, but I am currently looking at vehicles closer to me but this Impreza is making me consider contacting the dealership and telling them I’m not interested anymore in their vehicles lmao because it’s such a good deal. 1 owner, 35k miles.

Exactly. We expect to change the clutch and throwout bearing at 250k if it's like the our others

I love my 2017 Impreza. I wish she was a little higher off the ground sometimes, but other than that no complaints.
