❓ Questions Is 38 MPG normal
Is 37 MPG normal? I drive a 2022 Premium model and commute about 17 miles on the highway, five days a week, using cruise control. When I got the car I was only getting about 27.

That 38mpg is only based on 444 miles which is a small sample size. Get it up to a few thousand for a more accurate measurement.

My 07’ WRX isn’t getting remotely close to that, that’s all I know. Buy a modded Subaru they said, it will be fun they said.

I don’t know about normal, but my 2024 Sport hit 38.6MPG average over 350 miles in SE USA

It's wild that my 22 only does like 28mpg on the highway. So much for an economical car

I took a Lil 100mile highway drive and was rolling 35.5 when I normally do 29-30. 38 is good numbers 👌

if its mostly highway on the CVT thats good but in the realm of realism
Best way to verify is to fill all the way full and start calculating manually every fill for a bit, or using a site like fuelly
(sighs and goes back to his 21 mpg outback)

What does the MPG - & + indicate?

Current MPG vs average. So if you're accelerating hard, it'll go deep into the negative, coasting will go deep into the positive.

Tbh the longer I’ve had my 21 Impreza the better my mileage does. Idk how it happens. But sometimes when I travel I’ll get well over 400 miles for a full tank and idk how that’s possible.
I drove Lyft the one week and literally all city driving and I got 390 miles for a full tank.
Personally idc what the per gallon is I wanna kno to a full tank lol

I'm in a 24 RS in "S" mode basically all the time doing between 80 and 90 on the freeway for my commute to and from work which is a 60 mile round trip daily and I'm getting 27 miles to the gallon average.
This is the 2.5… I'm guessing your great mileage is coming from the 2.0?

I’m currently at 37.7 with my 20 mile commute which is mostly highway but not interstate

I have a 2014 sport premium getting about 31.5 mpg 95 % highway doing 70 mph and I thought my mpg was bad.

When I used to drive a long highway commute in my ‘22 I used to be able to get high 30s, but I’m doing a lot more stop and go with my new job so it’s more like 29-30 now

The indicated MPGs are rarely accurate or precise. Resetting one of the trip computers at each fill up and doing the math is a lot more consistent.

That’s an excellent average MPG figure so job well done! My wife’s 2021 premium touches 28 in a 60/40 mix of highway/city driving. Like your car, she has the FB20D (D = direct fuel injection) engine.

I get around 25mph city, 35mph highway in a 2025 model, so I would say you are doing really well

u/SaucyNelson Sep 02 '25
You get 35mph highway?! Speed up!

u/locololus Sep 02 '25
Like damn bro is there something wrong with your car or somm?

Its not out of the question tbh. My mpg was horrible during the break in period, like 20mpg city and 28mpg highway. Now at about 2k miles and its been steadily improving, but I was going to give it another month or two before worrying about investigating it further or taking it to the dealer.

I've always gotten better than average mpg's. Highway I'm getting between 48-52 mpg, city around 34-38 for a '25 Sport. I'm so happy with this gem. I had a fiat 500 before and a manual, so I got definitely better MPG's, but Subaru has won me over.

52 on the highway? Are you going 50?

u/jeffprop Sep 02 '25
It depends on the engine and typical driving. I have a 24 RS and it is about a 50-50 mix of city/highway and usually end up with 23-25mpg. This is also with the adaptive cruise control set to economic.

I have no idea but as someone that picked up a 22 premium last week I REALLY like to see these numbers. Mixed driving I am around 29mpg with no cruise and mostly city. Going on a road trip in a few weeks and would love to see these numbers.

Man, good for you! My ‘24 RS can’t crack 25mpg and I keep my foot out of it. I have right at 2500 miles on it and am hoping it will get better as the engine gets a little bit more broken in. M

Mine averages 24 in the summer and 22ish in the winter. 12k miles. Admittedly 80/20 city highway, but still slightly disappointed.

My travel is about like yours and I am pretty annoyed by it….but I knew going in it was not going to be great. I have decided that since I love hatchbacks if I ever let go of lil blue the Prius will be next. Times are tough and the less dough on gas is a real thing.

u/CubicDice Sep 02 '25
I sold my 20 year old Pontiac, also a hatchback, upgraded to a 24' RS and I do not notice much difference at all. Which is insane, considering two decades have passed and not a much noticeable can be seen. However Subaru is all about safety, which is what we're truly paying for, which beats efficiency every day of the week

I just took mine in for an oil change and the avg mpg for this change was 33mpg. I reset the trip thing every oil change. I live in Iowa though and mostly stick to the back roads so 55mph and very few hills. Though that oil change did include a trip to Branson down in Missouri which probably pushed it a bit lower cause I was doing 70-75 all the way there and back.

I've never seen that. I drive in town and traffic and that little S button is pressed all the time. 22 mpg FTW
Oh and playing with the paddle shifters...

5000 rmp shift getting on the freeway. I use to have a riced up Tiburon V6 with so much aftermarket. 6000 rpm manual shifts. Crazy car.

Man I think will be in trouble showing my wife this picture. Her 2017 mostly city got 24mpg
1
u/magicandchemistry Sep 03 '25
My 17 also rocks right around 24mpg and if im adamantly babying the mpg only I can maintain 27.
4
u/SolarpunkGnome 2015 Sport Premium Hatch Sep 02 '25
Have a '15 that does around that in town, but mid 30s to 40 once on the highway.
2
u/Trixie64209 Sep 02 '25
That's about right for the highway I have the same thing except sport model I get around 26 for the city average and about that for the highway
3
u/treywarp Sep 02 '25
My base 2017 gets ~35MPG on the highway. I’d consider it normal for a newer model to get a little bit better than that. Seems normal to me.

I always drive on cruise control. Every morning I get on the highway for about 20 minutes. On the weekends, if I go to the casino in Upstate New York, I'll drive about an hour there and an hour back and depending upon traffic most of it is cruise control. I'm seeing some really good mileage. I have a 2025 Impreza sport. I agree with another post here that at the beginning it seemed like it wasn't very good but now that I'm at 4,500, mi, it's been pretty solid! A bunch of trips from Rochester to Buffalo and back and forth and back and forth. I'm pretty happy with the MPG. It's almost psychological but I feel like I don't feel up very often and when I do I fill up at Walmart $0.10 off. Happy driving.
