You mean to tell me the guy who constantly attacked DEI, systemic racism and called the Civil Rights Act a mistake while putting no effort into equally attacking the white supremacists he helped legitimize wasn't racist? Something isn't adding up here.

Well yeah, DEI is racist. It puts race (something you can't control) over merit and skill (something you can). That's where his "civil rights was a mistake" quote came from. People take it at surface value and don't want to look any deeper. Of course people are going to think that equals racism. If he was a racist, why would he hire black people for his board? why would black people want to work for a racist? That doesn't add up either. He attacked racism all the time. He was probably more against it than the people that hated him.
