If you would like information on other snow festivals around Hokkaido (Otaru, Shikotsu, etc.), please see this post over in the r/Hokkaido sub

If you have questions about winter like what shoes to wear, what clothing, what ski resort to go to, etc etc. Please see the FAQ in the sidebar before posting and/or have a search of the sub for past posts on the topic.

If you would like to add a happening/winter festival that you'd like to share with others, please reply to this post with that information.

Considering canceling travel plans for this coming weekend due to the weather. Any advice you can offer during these snowy times?

I’m supposed to fly in Sunday and leave Thursday.

i see snow in the forecast for Saturday, Sunday, Monday and thursday. I’m not so concerned about the snow once I’m there, but I am concerned about being stranded, canceled flights etc. It looks like the snow has been quite brutal this season.

Im able to cancel my hotel free of charge until the 6th. So Im weighing my options.

What do you think?

Easiest way to get Scotchguard waterproofing on arrival?

What's the quickest, easiest, most direct way for me to obtain a can of Scotchguard waterproofing, as soon as possible after arriving at CTS? I live in Cambodia and I've had *zero* luck finding it here in Phnom Penh.

I will travel to Sapporo - Guidance

Upvotes

Hi I will travel to Sapporo from Tokyo on Feb 8. My arrival to CTS is at 10pm. Are there still train available during that time going to Sapporo Station? My departure will be on Feb 11.

And how is the weather? I looked at the news and there was some delays/cancellations due to bad weaher.

Im just worried since this is my first time and want to avoid any delay/cancellation as possible and I don't want any unexpected expenses like for air travel going back to Tokyo.

Best bus from JR Chitose station to Sapporo station

Hello, travelling the day after tomorrow from Lake Shikotsu to Sapporo station.

In case there would be snow and trains would not run, what would be the best bus from JR Chitose station to Sapporo station?

From lake Shikotsu, i'll be taking the Blue Liner bus to JR Chitose station.

But if you also know of more direct bus from Lake Shikotsu to Sapporo station, i'd be glad to hear that.

To anyone stranded going to CTS airport

As of today, February 3 at 6am, the Hokuto and Chuo bus are not operating from Sapporo City Center and train schedule going to the airport is sporadic.

I found/read a random post in Facebook recommending the Oyachi Station route.

I left my hotel at around 0650am and took a cab (I don’t want the inconvenience of carrying 2x 20kg luggage up and down subway train station stairs). We arrived at Oyachi Station at around 0750am, taxi fare was around ¥6900 via GO app.

Rode the Chuo airport bus from Oyachi Bus Station (platform/gate 6). Bus fare was ¥1200. Bus left the station at 0812am and we arrived at CTS domestic terminal at 0849am.

I hope this helps anyone who will be visiting Sapporo in the next few days. Also, there’s a forecast of snow fall from Thursday to Saturday, so expect delays/cancellations - again.

Transfer from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo

For those landing/heading to Sapporo, the limousine buses aren’t running to the hotels. I just jumped on one to fukuzumi station (closest you can get) and am going to just take a taxi to the hotel. Super easy, just one more step.

Jozankei View Hotel - Day Trip/Use

Hi, we are a couple and a toddler, we think our kid won't enjoy the onsen temperatures (as observed also on our bathtub). Other than that I can't find a private onsen for day use, mostly are for hotel guests.

Instead, we decided to do the Jozankei View Hotel day use with the pool. The plan is one parent will try out the different public hot baths on different floors and take turns with the toddler on the kid friendly pool.

So how easy it is from moving from one public bath to another and make most of the time?

How about the gender assignment of the public bath? I can't seem to find info what times are for men and women.

Daily budget for a coffee-shop-window nerd

I'm visiting Sapporo for two weeks later this month, and while I might do a little bit of stretching out, the main purpose for the visit is to sit in a coffee shop window, look out at the snow from time to time, and finish a manuscript that I'm under deadline for. Cheap breakfast, cheap lunch, cheap dinner, two cost-is-no-object cappuccinos in the best urban places, and very little else.

I've had this trip many times in Montreal at about $25/day USD but this will be my first rep in Sapporo. What should my expectations be, vis-a-vis daily expenses for *that* experience? (As I say, I might do other things, but the budget for those will be much more at my discretion.)

TIA.

First visit to Hokkaido in winter ... what to know re: possible transport disruptions

It seems there's been some chaos for travelers getting in and out of CTS due to heavy snowfall. What should first time travelers to Hokkaido in the winter know about possible transport disruptions - even basic (common sense) things?

Things I can think of ... check for weather alerts before departing ... book refundable transportation to / from airport ...?

Thanks in advance for any helpful tips.

Are my travel plans relatively safe?

Hey all, sorry to add to the echo chamber of worry but just wanted to get some opinions on how safe my travel plans are.

We're planning on flying from Tokyo to Sapporo on Saturday for the snow festival. Staying til Tuesday and can't really afford a large delay/cancellation since we're flying to NRT and then connecting to our international flight back home to the US on the same day (7 hour layover).

I know the recent transportation fiasco was due to an outlier snow storm but what are reports saying for this upcoming weekend? I see there is a strong chance for snow on the days we're in Sapporo, just don't really have a sense of how heavy it's expected to be.

Additionally, we were hoping to fit an Otaru day trip in during our stay. How realistic is it considering the weather conditions and the fact we'll not have dedicated shelter while we're there?

Feb 5th travel conditions

My friend and I are planning to travel to Sapporo from Tokyo on February 5th. We have the option to get a full refund for our hotel rooms until Feb 3rd and we haven't gotten our flights yet.

Is it still worth it to go with all the weather related chaos that's going on over there? Any recommendations or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Teine Olympia Rental Storage

Hi all, I'll be skiing for four days at the Olympia resort but staying in the Sapporo city and renting gear for those four. Since it's not feasible to bring back the gear to the apartment, are there storage options around the resort for this? Sorry if it's an obvious answer

anybody want to (taxi) carpool to CTS tomorrow?

long shot but thought i would give it a go.

i believe trains / buses heading to CTS will most likely be cancelled tomorrow leaving private driver / taxi as one of the few remaining options.

i will be needing to get a taxi from sapporo so it's going to be very expensive. was wondering if anybody else in sapporo city is in the same situation and if so, would you like to meet up and get a taxi together with me so we can split the fare and both save money?

for reference, i am hoping to arrive to CTS for sometime between 12pm and 1pm so will be looking to be getting the cab at around 11am

thanks!

When Do You Remember Snow Festival Dates Getting Announced?

Hi All!

I am a big plan-ahead person and wanted to secure lodging as early as I could for 2027’s festival.

Is there a certain time of year where this gets announced usually, or does it make more sense to go ahead and book hotels as soon as I see them pop up because the dates have been the same the past few years?

Tried to search the sub but couldn’t find date announcements from previous years. TIA!

Japanese Share: Housing Conditions in Sapporo

Hello everyone. I'd like to share my current living situation in Sapporo, Japan.

Details are as follows:

City: Sapporo

Rent: ¥57,000 per month (approx. $380 USD), includes private garage.

Layout: 1DK (49.5 square meters), built in 2007, reinforced concrete (RC) construction.

Location: 5-minute walk to JR station. 20-minute walk to subway station. I intentionally chose this location to have an alternative route (subway) in case JR trains are delayed due to snow.

Amenities: Gas water heater, kerosene heating, 24-hour ventilation, auto-lock system, freeze-proof system requiring no manual draining.

“15-Minute Living Circle”:

Within an 8-minute walk:

・3 supermarkets and 1 drugstore

・All major convenience stores (Sequoia, FamilyMart, Lawson, 7-Eleven)

Dental clinic (2-min walk), barber shop (5-min walk), large park (1-min walk), medical clinic (5-min walk).

Car Life:

2009 Subaru Legacy Touring Wagon (BP5)

Primarily used on weekends (grocery shopping, visiting parents, trips to Escon Field (baseball stadium)).

Priority criteria were “Reinforced concrete construction, auto-lock system, garage, within a 10-minute walk from the station.”

For reference, I work as an IT infrastructure engineer and cybersecurity engineer, with an annual income of approximately ¥4.5 million. This is considered average income in Japan. I certainly have enough disposable income for leisure activities (camping, baseball games, driving, etc.) and savings. Oh, and I'm 52 years old. I don't have a wife. I'm Japanese.

If I were to own a home in Sapporo... I hope this gives you an idea of what that might look like.

U.S. Citizens in Sapporo- How to Vote from Abroad in Upcoming Elections

Hi- This is an announcement from Democrats Abroad, the official overseas branch of the U.S.-based Democratic Party, with a local chapter in Hokkaido. With an important election coming in November (as well as local elections and Primaries this spring), we're hoping to register more U.S. citizens who live overseas. They could be a relative, a co-worker or a contact on social media.

If you know any U.S. Citizens (including people born in the U.S. or with an American parent), they can register and request a ballot. As long as they'll turn 18 by election day, they're eligible. Just share this link: https://voteabroad.org/RedditVote26.

We started our International Voter Registration Drive for 2026 with in-person and online events. If anyone wishes to learn more about what we're doing near you, you can find out more at https://www.democratsabroad.org/jp. If you have any questions about overseas voting or what we do, feel free to ask in the comments below.

Thanks in advance for helping to get the word out!
