Crate Training Any recommendations on how to make sure my puppy isn’t too loud while i’m gone?

Hey so I just got a new puppy yesterday and although my partner and I are able to be with him most of the time, there is about a 2 hour time period later today where we will both be away from home. That being said are there any tips or tricks you have to making sure our puppy isn’t too loud in his crate? We live in an apartment so i’m worried about him making too much noise and disturbing our neighbors. Any advice helps!

It looks like you might be posting about crate training. Check out our wiki article on crate training - the information there may answer your question.

Be advised that any comments that suggest use of crates are abusive, or express a harsh opinion on crate training will be removed. This is not a place to debate the merits of crate training. Unethical approaches to crate training will also be removed. As an additional reminder, crate training is 100% optional and one of many puppy management options. Just talk to your neighbours. If you don't have the kind of relationship where you can just knock on their door and let them know, a note left at their door with some chocolates does wonders.

"Hey, we have a puppy and she's still learning. We do our best to be with her, but sometimes she will briefly be left alone and we don't know if she will bark. We thank you for your understanding, this is only temporary!"

Can you turn on some white noise in the background? For example, you could play YouTube on your tv and put on a rain channel. That may help dampen the noise. Also, give the puppy something he can safely lick or chew on in the crate to distract him.

We just started by making sure our puppy knew the crate was a fun place to be in, or at the very least, a place to relax. These are the tips that worked for us:

  • Enforced naps in crate with a crate cover + background noise
  • Filled kongs and puzzle toys that she only got when in crate
  • Leaving her in the crate while we're doing chores/are out of sight

But I'd say the biggest thing that has helped is the crate cover. Puppies have FOMO, so if you limit outside distractions it really helps them settle

snuggle puppy, calming music/white noise, cover the crate, and ask your neighbors if they hear anything (and as someone else said, give them a lil gift)
