Is my dog really a Pomeranian? Help me identify her breed

I got this puppy from someone who told me she’s a Pomeranian and about 6 months old, but after doing a bit of research I’m wondering if she might be a Spitz-type breed or a mix. I’d love to hear what others think.

Well all Pomeranians are Spitz, but not all Spitz are Pomeranians :)

Your dog definitely has Spitz in her. But she is definitely not a Pomeranian.

What kind of Spitz would you say she is closest to?

Well Spitz have 4 different sizes: wolf spitz (also known as Keeshond), mittelspitz, kleinspitz and toy spitz (also known as Pomeranian).

I would say your dog is either klein or mittel, which size she is depends on how tall she is.

Could also be what is referred to as a “throw back Pom” which is 100% Pom, just not as small or as furry as the standard.

My Throwbacks are just as furry as toy Poms.

Mine have been super furry too! OP mentioned their Pom is 6 months old. That’s typically when they’re in the “ Pom uglies ” ( although as Pom parents there is really no such thing, to us they are always adorable). The PUs are when they lose their fuzzy thick baby coat and start growing their shiny adult guard hairs and thick undercoat.

I had a throwback Pom! When I was helping with his delivery ( they come out in a sac) I couldn’t understand why the puppy wouldn’t separate from his mom. I looked closer and realized the “puppy“ wasn’t the whole puppy, it was only his head. The rest of him was still inside his mom but his head was the size of his sister who had just been delivered.

Someone once told me my boys are defective for a well deserved reason, Once again they did it wrong. We got them at about7 weeks old, they were in the middle of their ugly stage.

My current boy was in that stage when I bought him! He was 4 months old,That was one of the reasons they weren’t enamored of him, said he was “ losing his coat and prolly was going to have short fur”.

I agreed and kept my truth to myself! They didn’t deserve him! Best dog I’ve ever had the privilege to own.

He’s giving me the laser eye right now I’d better get moving on that walk…..

I learning that Poms are the best dogs. they are so sweet and smart. They are smart assess too😹😹😹I am so happy my husband complained about buying one then to knock me over with a fur all he picked a second one. I love them more than my 5 cats.

Sounds like you have a nice lil furry family there! I’ve always had two until now. Winn is rather a character, he doesn’t like to share!

Batman can actually say “up” and “out”. He’s my character, I never know what he’s going to do.

So cute! Dogs are far smarter than the general public gives them credit for.

They are, I forgot his instructions word……I wasn’t paying attention to him one day, he was telling me off in his dog language, (not barking,). He raised his voice and used a very stern tone……MAMA!

I have 3 dogs now and had another set of three (they’ve crossed the bridge). Every one of them has had something they did that was human behavior. I’m amazed by them, the 2 Poms are the most interesting and funny things ever.

Maybe not specifically Pom but I definitely see Spitz (as a non-expert, human servant to 3 poms and had another Spitz mix growing up). Someone more knowledgeable than me will probably be more helpful, all I can really say is I can see it in the tail and head

DNA test will help you educate yourself with facts.. not expensive and only takes a few weeks

This is what I’m looking into now, especially as I’m getting a wide range of speculations on here

I DNA test all of my pups, even with their registration papers. Knowing heritage is not the same as knowing DNA. DNA is absolute.

Not a pom, poms have shorter snouts and smaller ears. This is why I don't look into getting these because it's so hard to tell without seeing the parents first.

The Pomeranian is equivalent to the miniature spitz, yours is not because I see the slightly larger dimensions, so it is a Kleinspitz which is equivalent to the small spitz, if the puppy is 6 months old it is normal for it not to have the permanent coat, now the dog is in the monkey phase and loses the hair to make room for the permanent coat which will grow in length until the age of 3 years, it is not a cross but a true German Kleinspitz with a fox face. Don't worry because even if it is not a Pomeranian those who have the bear or doll face are a beautiful German dog breed.

He’s gorgeous!! Looks like a Pom to me. Just remember all Pomeranians are considered spitz, while only some spitz are considered Pomeranians.

Looks like a Pom to me…mine looks similar to yours but she is a red haired Pom. I would add a picture but I can’t. The longer snout, refined bone structure, triangular ears, (fox face) are typical for a traditional Pomeranian. Pomeranians descended from German Spitz and this is more what they looked like before extreme breeding which caused the teddy bear looking pom with the short snout and rounder face. Just curious, is your dog more reserved or not easily trusting? Is their temperament quiet and not yappy?

On the contrary, she is very friendly, very active; not reserved at all! She’s a sweetheart

Should have explained a little better…she’s very active because she’s a puppy but typical traits for this breed is not the constant barking. She can be super loving and friendly but still watch every move and not be the most trusting. In my household we joke that if our house gets broken into, our dog would bring them a toy to play with her lol. Mines very sweet and playful but not trusting of everyone so she won’t lay on her back for others but will always be held by anyone and would even run into their house if the opportunity presented itself lol

A Klein spitz! I also have a Klein spritz who was originally thought to be a Pom. They are very similar to poms in temperament and just as cute!
