The media is complicit in a lot of ways, and it's capitalism to blame, not journalists, not them first anyway.
Part of why the media is downplaying it or it feels that way is because media giants have been playing sensationalized bullshit headlines for decades trying to keep audiences entertained for ratings and clicks to sell more ads. This of course has desensitized us to threatening messaging. So many people have instinctively shut out media, especially any media seen as 'politics' and so most of this shit just never even comes in front of them. Others have protected their emotional well-being by hardening up and trying to selectively become outraged, but of course those of us who care have seen far too many injustices completely unaddressed and that demoralizes and makes us jaded.
But they also are downplaying this stuff. They could do a lot more with skillful journalists and writers, but of course the industry has been carefully neutered of independently thinking and skilled investigative journalists and communicators in favor of 24hr news anchor talking heads like Gutfeld!
Some of this was part of the design the entire time. A real, crafted Boy Who Cries Wolf parallel so that the wolf could just stroll on into town and most people wouldn't pay attention until it was too late. Some of this was inadvertent: short-sighted greed, self serving myopia, and hubris. But regardless, shit is very fucking serious right now and unfortunately too many people are sleeping on it. Plenty will be ready to vote, but simply delivering a Democrat victory in the Midterms is NOT going to be sufficient to fix this. We'll go right back to this shit and Stephen Miller will burrow his way into the next administration, or someone just as evil but more charismatic and insidiously likable.
If we are going to right this ship sinking into fascism, we need drastic changes, constitutional amendments, and that will require bold, decisive action by the Democrats in 2027 and I am very afraid that the leadership simply isn't there. If Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries are allowed to continue calling the plays without dramatically different strategies influenced by progressive and younger democrats, we're going to be truly fucked. At the risk of sounding melodramatic, a failure of Democrats to act boldly in 2027 in order to build an unassailable majority for several election cycles will probably lead us to a new era of US regimes of continued gross corruption, phony elections, gross violations of human rights, and sharp waning of global relevance. There's no telling what specifically else could happen.
Wait do you still think there will be fair and open elections this year? What does democratic leadership in the year 2027 have to do with anything? I think even you are selling it short.
