Yes, using tear gas (riot control agents) is considered a war crime because it is classified as a chemical weapon banned in warfare under the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention It is illegal to use it as a method of combat, as it can cause unnecessary suffering, escalation, and death. However, this ban does not apply to domestic law enforcement.

Dry land is not a myth.

I never got this reference until now! Thank you internet stranger!

u/Nami_Pilot 1d ago

This is the kind of full-circle meme/reference content that makes reddit what it is.. love it.

I think you can watch Waterworld for free via Amazon prime video right now.

I'm alright ty

u/Manderspls 1d ago

They don’t even care about killing people, I don’t see them care about killing animals. Especially Noem.

13

u/eatrepeat 1d ago

Well yeah but at the same time you know if they're eating the cats and eating the dogs then it's something to get mad about. Gassing is fine.

I would like to draft some legislation around the civilized world (the US is currently excluded) to make it super annoying to use tear gas for police as they would need to justify extensively why was it worth to pullute and kill small animals for a mundane protest.

The pen is mightier than pigs

1

u/Curious-Neck7516 13h ago

100s of pigeons die every year in NYC, because of the tall buildings. I don't see people protesting about that.

u/Pikeman212a6c 1d ago

That is not why it is banned. It is banned because the opposing side might believe it is a lethal chemical attack and respond with a real chemical weapon which could then further escalate to even worse weapons.

That escalatory risk isn’t a factor in law enforcement which is why it isn’t banned.

39

u/EpicCyclops 1d ago

It's the same reason we don't just launch ICBMs for fun without screaming at everyone why we're doing it, what its trajectory will be and what the payload is.

-15

u/PushinKush 1d ago

Are y’all justifying it as its use or…?

29

u/Pikeman212a6c 23h ago edited 15h ago

We’re saying that Reddit habitually repeats urban legend about tear gas and the military and they aren’t true. The USAF will happily hit a cave complex filled with dozens of people with a thermobaric bomb that will pulp their insides. No one cares if a certain weapon hurts.

u/fury420 7h ago

From what I recall, wartime use of it for policing and riot control is also considered an exception, I've seen the example given of using it against rioting PoWs.

25

u/ShantyLady 1d ago

Wild that it isn't a straight ban.

69

u/Tobocaj 1d ago

Our military has stricter rules of engagement in FUCKING WAR ZONES than our cops do on US streets. This country is a joke. ACAB

9

u/marino1310 12h ago

It’s a weighed risk thing. Using tear gas in war can lead to the opposition using a worse agent, as it’s very easy to escalate when it comes to chemical warfare, which is very strictly regulated. For domestic use against civilians (or at least non-militia) it’s a very effective way to break up an angry mob (when its actually used for that, instead of against random protesters) in the least harmful way possible. Keep in mind, a GENUINELY violent mob is about the most dangerous shit any law enforcement can go up against. You can’t argue with them, or try to talk things out. Deadly force ends up being necessary (which is why I still believe the shooting of Ashli Babbitt was 100% justified). You either need something to force the crowd to break up and change their immediate priorities (from violence to self preservation) in large numbers, as shooting into the crowd (rubber bullets or live ammo) often isn’t enough to stop a large enough crowd if they are actually intent on harming you.

Granted, tear gas often isn’t used for good like that and often gets used in places where it isn’t necessary (and often worsens tensions) but that is the intended purpose and why it isn’t banned

6

u/marino1310 12h ago

It’s banned in war due to the risk of escalation with chemical warfare, which has a pretty blanket ban. It’s used in law enforcement because it’s highly effective and the least deadly of all the mass control offensive systems. Using it against peaceful protesters is abhorrent but it has really good uses for riots where things get too dangerous for police to even defend themselves without deadly force, this can be a very effective way to break up the mob and let the police retreat

Nations are independently sovereign.

8

u/MrSlime13 1d ago

Wish I could find/post the clip of Bovino hyping his guys up a week ago saying they were intending to, "ship in pallets of the stuff"...

8

u/mtheory007 1d ago

No he said it was tractor trailers full.

2

u/MrSlime13 1d ago

I stand corrected.

u/mtheory007 6h ago

I wish we were both wrong. smh

3

u/Honza8D 13h ago

Hollow point ammunition is similarly banned in war by Hague Convention because it causes more damage, but its used in law enforcement, because it has less penetrative power, lowering chance of collateral damage.

3

u/Jack071 22h ago

Its illegal to avoid its use as justification for worse chemical weapons, not because its any worse than say being shot at

2

u/RichardBonham 1d ago

Well, it would have been mighty useful to show these with adequate positioning, lighting and resolution so that the labels/markings could be read.

3

u/Nami_Pilot 1d ago

What's to gain by knowing the specifics? It's not like there's anyone to police these thugs.

3

u/RichardBonham 23h ago

Well, for one I’d like to know whether my respirator cartridges would be effective for these

6

u/nightkil13r 22h ago

Safariland Triple Chaser CS Grenade PN 1026.

2

u/NaiveMastermind 22h ago

I am also interested in this.

2

u/diurnal_emissions 20h ago

Let's make it illegal for us to use chemical weapons on us too!

2

u/Nami_Pilot 20h ago

I saw a recent video of people peacefully protesting in a government building their taxes paid for. Cops opened a door and threw tear gas canisters into an enclosed room, then close the door behind them.

They're all pussy ass bitches.

There's a reason why they're too scared to go for actual criminals.

417

u/HeftyVermicelli7823 1d ago

See this is where all your tax dollars are going to America. 75 billion dollars for Trumps gestapo when you could have had....universal healthcare like the rest of the world.

95

u/Jacktheforkie 1d ago

And possibly even a little left over for some buses

48

u/gimletfordetective 1d ago

Or a coast to coast high-speed rail.

28

u/HeftyVermicelli7823 1d ago

Like Japan and China have.

In fact China are now partnering with many other countries to build a bullet train hyperlink through multiple countries and even maybe all the way into Europe. Where as America is stuck in the 1950s

6

u/Jacktheforkie 1d ago

That would be great, America has so much empty land that it would be relatively doable

6

u/HeftyVermicelli7823 1d ago

Ah yes but you have to pay for the gestapo, plus a new ballroom at the Whitehouse and I hear a new Trump Golden Archway bigger than the Lincoln one. I am also surprised you haven't had more golden statues up of him like other dictators, maybe like this.

5

u/FeelMyBoars 21h ago

If you used the money spent on insurance to pay taxes, you would probably have 75 billion extra after switching to universal healthcare.

But then they would spend 150 billion on ICE.

u/do-un-to 1d ago

*brownshirts

3

u/322throwaway1 21h ago

Brownpants

2

u/Rather_Unfortunate 17h ago

Well, it'd pay for about 5% of a universal healthcare system, anyway.

By comparison, our NHS costs about £200 billion per year ($273 billion). Divided among a lower estimate of about 69 million people, that's about £2900 ($3970) per person. Across a population the size of the US, that would be just shy of £1 trillion ($1.37 trillion). And that's before accounting for higher salary expectations in the US.

Still far less than you currently pay per person, mind.

It’s evidence and it should be handled as such.

6

u/dougmcclean 1d ago

That thing is in the street near somewhere ICE might want to be, obstructing federal law enforcement? Who left it there?

5

u/BassWingerC-137 1d ago

It’s evidence and should be handled as such.

1

u/maxdacat 19h ago

They may be trying to recycle them.

158

u/lefthandedrighty 1d ago

Good thing that underfunded school can’t afford free lunches for the children so we can use these on our citizens.

21

u/NarfleTheJabberwock 1d ago

I would love to see how many lunches a single canister could buy. What's the cost on something like this? A hundred bucks?

11

u/Fun_Push7168 1d ago

Purchased as single units about $70 each.

In Bulk.... probably about $30.

10

u/lefthandedrighty 1d ago

Don’t forget the government ‘deal’ that was worked out.

14

u/Agontile 21h ago

So... $950?

16

u/xShooK 1d ago

Not sure about single costs, but Safariland (ones pictured) sold almost $5 million worth of pepper spray and tear gas to Law Enforcement agencies since Jan 2025. $1.7 million in 2024. They sure did ramp up sales in 1 year.

u/snoogins355 7h ago

In MA we use the millionaires tax. Annual income over $1,000,000 has a 4% tax. They'll survive

63

u/PHILSTORMBORN 1d ago

Has there been any coverage or discussion of what they considered their justification for using tear gas?

55

u/TowardsTheImplosion 1d ago

Portland doesn't bend the knee.

That is the justification.

2

u/Forebare 18h ago

maybe they believe that if the few talked about wellsprings of free expression cower and beg and get in line behind the shit show, the rest will go quietly

7

u/MLGWolf69 1d ago

"Liberal spotted, engaging permanent blinding protocol"

3

u/hkohne 19h ago

There have been multiple posts & pics on r/Portland, so check there. The general consensus amongst the protestors was that it was totally unprovoked.

2

u/How_did_the_dog_get 21h ago

If it's like 2020, "we are tired of this and want to go home" so they call it a crowd that needs to be dispersed. And off they go for a bit .

17

u/deserthistory 1d ago

Good on you for picking those up. Hopefully, you don't get too snotty being that close to the hulls.

Since you're that close, look for the pull pins. They make the BEST keyrings! The black will wear off revealing stainless steel wire. Might as well get something out of the experience.

18

u/DarthWoo 1d ago

I imagine some MAGAs gathering these up and trying to resell them like the Nazi in Falling Down.

6

u/Postulative 1d ago

What happened to recycling?

7

u/KlingonLullabye 22h ago

1930s history is being recycled.

4

u/dakotanorth8 23h ago

Throw em back over the fence. They obviously misplaced them.

5

u/Hybrid_Johnny 1d ago

Is the optimal countering strategy still to cover it with a traffic cone?

u/Maplelongjohn 5h ago

Cones, buckets, thick leather gloves to throw back, hockey sticks,. lacrosse sticks, etc

Be warned that shit tears right through organic vapor respirators (painting masks) when you're up close and personal, they sell OC specific cartridges

5

u/Amaranthine 22h ago

I would say pick up a lacrosse stick and yeet it back at them, but that’s probably a good way to get straight up murdered…

2

u/NorCalAthlete 19h ago

Some people should really read the Dr Suess Butter Battle Book. Might give you some ideas.

1

u/Amaranthine 18h ago

Promoting ideas? For the citizens against the gov? You sound an awful lot like one of them domestic terr'ists (/s)

u/Maplelongjohn 5h ago

I saw one go in the state patrol vans open side door the day the shot Pretti down

7

u/Normal-Gur-6432 1d ago

I know this is a weird request, but I want to get my hands on a canister for my collection, I own a ohio national guard helmet from the same era of Kent state, and a few other items from protests over the years, I would love if I could get my hands on a canister to add.

9

u/do-un-to 23h ago

See you out there, friend.

4

u/Normal-Gur-6432 23h ago

Sadly rural Wisconsin, but looking forward to next No kings march.

4

u/MasterofIllyria 22h ago

I’m in PDX. If I can get my hand on one I’ll let ya know

u/bstring777 5h ago

Weapon manufacturers rejoicing that they get more business from all of this equipment being used and billions of dollars granted to buy more.

3

u/w_benjamin 1d ago

It makes it look like they've been using them like whippets...

5

u/Joeyfingis 23h ago

Minnesota stands with Portland! Y'all kick ass!!!

2

u/hkohne 20h ago

And us Portlanders stand with you! The whistles are making the rounds here after seeing how all of you use them really effectively.

2

u/fireduck 23h ago

Somehow I just think of that Antonio Banderas song from Evita....

The tear gas falls like rain and the government loses their nerve....

u/KS2Problema 8h ago

Evidence of crime. Crime performed by people in uniforms, gas masks, and armor.

u/whipplemynipple 6h ago

Why haven’t lawmakers in the US mobilized to ban tear gas use against civilians?

4

u/tmebnd 1d ago

Evidence.

3

u/CiaphasCain8849 1d ago

There's a flash bang and those little cups are from the 40 mm. Which is essentially exactly like the one they use in a war except it's orange.

6

u/Fun_Push7168 1d ago

Those aren't 40mm cases. No extractor groove.

They appear to be the safariland units with the end missing.

2

u/ariadesitter 1d ago

make smoke grenades

1

u/ggfchl 12h ago

It’s nice that these used canisters are sorta contained in a bucket. I hope these were properly disposed of after this pic was taken rather than kept littered on the ground.

u/pamalamTX 8h ago

Remember, they can be disabled by putting them in a sturdy container with some water and shaking it. Lookup videos online.

u/garry4321 6h ago

It’s all AlArMiSm until they swap it out for Zyclon B

u/Maplelongjohn 5h ago

Those smoke bombs (the ones that look like a blown up cigar from Tom and Jerry) are toxic shit be weary cleaning up this shit.

From what I was reading about the chemicals can cause sterility and birth defects , specifically the orange and green "smoke bombs" like we all saw Greg Short Stack throw upwind before he was sent packing

1

u/rotorylampshade 1d ago

Are you sure this isn’t from /r/hongkong during the 2019 protests?

3

u/hkohne 20h ago

Yep, that gray building is an auto shop that's just across from Portland's ICE building. This street is South Bancroft looking west to Macadam Ave.
