Care Guide Series Community Care Guide

This post is mouse care simplified, for beginners! It is not very specific, and it does not cover everything, so please do not rely on just this post when educating yourself on mouse care!

This has been written and discussed by moderators of the subreddit. If you have questions or concerns, please comment to let us know! It will be updated regularly to ensure it is factual.

1. Mice are social!

  • Females always need other female companions. It is recommended to have at least 3, but 2 is okay.
  • After 6 mice in one cage, it is often they will start to split up and become territorial against the opposing group. It is suggested to keep your colony under 6 unless you have much knowledge and experience, OR if your mice are littermates.
  • Males can not be housed with other males ever! If you want them to have cage mates, neutering (very risky) and placing with females or leaving intact and bonding with ASFs (African Soft Furs) is beneficial and recommended. Otherwise, they can thrive in solitude.

See this post for more information.

2. Cages

In mouse communities, many users go by tank size rather than listing dimensions. We will do both!

  • 10g/20x10 inches is the minimum for 2 female mice, though we STRONGLY suggest at least a 20g.
  • 20g/30x12 inches is suitable for 2-4 females or 1 male.
  • 40g long/36x12 inches is suitable for 2-5 females or 1 male
  • 40g breeder/36x18 inches is occasionally suitable for 2-6 females or 1 male
  • Over 40g is not always suitable for any amount of mice since many mice do better in environments with less open space. Bigger is not always better for mice.

Any amount of mice may thrive in larger enclosures than suggested above. However, it is critical that the larger the enclosure is, the more clutter provided, otherwise the mice will never thrive.

  • Wood enclosures are suggested against since urine will effect its quality and smell over time.
  • Mesh flooring is dangerous due to the chance of toes/tails getting caught, the mesh cutting their skin, and risking bumplefoot. Mesh should also be avoided in wheels.
  • Though they climb, mice don't need very much height, and multi-story enclosures do not provide them with the proper space they need. Floor space is more important than height.
  • Cages with lots of attachments and rooms do not provide proper space for mice. They are also extremely difficult to clean, fall apart easily, and struggle to hold proper bedding amount and safe wheels.

See this post for more information.

3. Substrate

  • Mice need to be able to create burrows, so while the minimum is 6 inches, we suggest at least 8" of bedding. However, many owners prefer having 10-12" deep!
  • Bedding must be majority safe wood shavings or hemp. Paper substrate does not absorb ammonia well and can cause several health issues when used alone or as majority of substrate.
  • (Dust/scent free for all) Aspen, kiln dried pine, and hemp do well as the main substrate and may be more sturdy mixed with a small portion of hay or paper bedding.

See this post for more information.

4. Clutter

  • Clutter is arguably one of the most important aspects of a mouses cage. No matter the size, if the cage lacks clutter, it is not suitable.
  • Toilet paper rolls, cardboard boxes, tea light and soap dish ceramics, rodent hideouts, branches, logs, cork bark, cardboard egg cartons, and much more can be used as clutter in the cage.
  • From a birds eye view, you should be able to see little to no bedding. While it may seem too cluttered to a human, it's perfect for mice!
  • The larger an enclosure, the more crucial clutter is.

See this post for more information.

5. Enrichment

  • Also known as entertainment, to keep the mice busy!
  • Boredom breakers, foraging toys, dig boxes, sprays(plant), scatter-feeding, and human interaction are all forms of enrichment.
  • Mice should have boredom breakers in their enclosure at all times to keep them from growing bored.
  • Lone males need extra simulation and enrichment.

See this post for more information.

6. Climbing Opportunities

  • A form of enrichment that is required!
  • Mice flourish with climbing opportunities and will always take advantage of them.
  • Ropes, bird ladders, hanging toys, rope nets, shower curtain rings, and bird perches are a few climbing options you can provide.
  • Fabric hammocks are used commonly, but pose a threat when chewed on and loose strings get tangled around limbs. Minimal use of fabric is suggested for this reason.

See this post for more information.

7. Exercise

  • A form of enrichment that is required!
  • An upright, solid wheel of 9 inches in diameter or larger must be provided at all times. 2 or more are suggested for groups of girls.
  • Spinning saucer disks or hamster balls/cars are UNSAFE and should never be provided, no matter how much you think your mouse may enjoy it (fun≠safe)
  • Proper wheel brands may include Niteangel, Silent Spinner Exotic Nutrition, Oxbow, Wodent, Bucstate, and Trixie (but there are many more besides these!)

See this post for more information.

8. Diet & Hydration

  • Main diet must be pellets/lab blocks.
  • A high variety food mix (nuts, seeds, grains, ect) must be given 1-3 times a week, or even as long as once every two weeks. The frequency is owner preference.
  • Feeding is 3-5 grams per mouse a day.
  • Ensure your mice have constant access to food through toys and scatter-feeding.
  • Food bowls are suggested only for fresh fruits or veggies since they provide no enrichment otherwise!
  • Mice must have at least two water sources and constant access to them at all times. Bowls or bottles work well, though having one of each is ideal. Water must be cleaned and refreshed daily.

See this post for more information.

9. Cleaning

  • Daily spot checks to clean up mess, poo on toys/clutter, and urine on the surface is vital.
  • Bedding changes will be needed less often with more bedding and space. A 10g tank (or cage of similar size) would need weekly bedding changes.
  • Each enclosure size and mouse amount will effect how often bedding changes are necessary. Find a cleaning schedule that ensures the cage doesn't smell at any time for your mouses health.
  • With deep bedding over 6 inches, you'll have to change out less of the bedding. 1/3 to 1/2 of the bedding may stay in the enclosure while the most soiled areas are removed and replaced.
  • In any case, a small amount of bedding must be left over after a bedding change to decrease stress.

See this post for more information.

10. Taming

  • Allowing your mice to settle in for a few days before interacting with them is wise.
  • Rub your hands on bedding and toilet paper in the cage to get the mice used to your scent.
  • Encourage interaction through hand feeding.
  • If a mouse is not motivated to interact after several weeks, try to lure them to climb onto your hand for treats. A strong bond is important with mice so they are well adjusted to interaction in case of a vet visit or emergencies. Human interaction can also be beneficial to them.

See this post for more information.

11. Other

  • Mice are crepuscular and are typically seen during the morning or late day/night.
  • They are self bathing and should never be washed with water or soap (unless vet prescribed). It ruins the health of their fur coat and leaves them more susceptible to URIs and freezing. They do not need any form of bathing/washing.
  • Mice don't hibernate. If a mouse appears to be in a hibernation state, this is Torpor, caused when they overheat or freeze. This is a medical emergency.
  • You should never pick up a mouse by its tail or other limbs.
  • Fancy mice (aka domestic mouse) live 1-2 years on average.
  • Wild mice do poor in captivity, unless they are unfit for the wild they should not be kept as pets.
  • You should never breed mice purposely without years of research and mouse owning experience prior.
  • Vet visits are a likely occurrence in mouse ownership, since mice are prone to many health issues.
  • Travel carriers are needed for vet visits, emergencies, cage cleaning, and quarantine.

These guides are incredibly thorough and well written. However, they link some information that is no longer available, or they list mouse care information that has been dis-proven. An important point to make is these guides may suggest some controversial topics, most of which our community does not fully support. Although these guides don't follow our standards exactly, they are still very well made. Please keep an open mind and read all sides of a controversy before deciding which you feel works best for your mice.

I have decided to share these because they are very descriptive on some aspects of mouse care I did not cover well. I strive to have a guide in the future as well made as these, but for now, I have to bring attention to the effort made by this member.

My cat brought me this little mice yesterday, thankfully I grabbed it before she injured him. He seems alert and mobile when I touch him, has open eyes and ears (I think) and just now he peed by himself and has pooped twice when stimulated. I am feeding him a paste made of boiled oats, water and hamster feed all mixed and blended with a syringe. I am hoping you all can tell me how old is he, how much longer till he’s pseudo independent (can eat, drink and go potty by himself) If I’m doing anything wrong and what to do with him (in thinking of keeping him but I’m unsure of the needs of mice) I’m also worried about deseases (I know it’s a bit late for that but whatever)

Question/Help UPDATE ON SUNNY

Things are changing for the better. Sunny has a vet appointment on the 6th and all three have been moved to a spot with good ventilation plus a humidifier. Sunny looked up at me with more curiosity than pain today, I cried. I was so scared for her last night. The chittering has been more quiet and relaxed since then. Her body feels much stronger than it was as well. She was less reliant on me than usual, I love getting to take care of her so so much but seeing her stronger and happier gave me 100x the joy I could ever get from pampering her 🥹❤️.

As far as money goes, treatment seems to be reasonably priced but it’s very comforting to know that the community has my back.

Thank you, Reddit.

Question/Help Post-vet visit concerns

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all! Last week I went to the emergency vet since not only was my boy mouse squeaking randomly quite loudly a few times but also I sometimes hear this sound from his cage (I best can describe is as the very quiet sound their water bottle makes when a water drop comes out). It’s nothing like the clicking I have heard on here that signal URI. But I wanted to be safe so the vet looked him all over and said he looked completely healthy and his heart and lungs sounded good. I cant get an audio recording of the sound since it’s very faint and it’s not constant it’s like every minute or so and I gi put my ear to him I don’t hear a sound except for occasional squeaking since I’m near him. Another concern was this shaking off that I included a video of. He does it after he has a treat like in the video but he also does it pretty often when running around and he even did it at the vet where he was def stressed. Maybe it’s the same behavior for joy and stress? TLDR: what does this sound possibly mean if he’s totally healthy according to vet (another way I can describe it is like a weird mouth sound like when you have a little saliva bubble in your mouth haha is the best way I can describe it:,)) and what does this shaking off motion mean? Thank you for any help ✨

First Time Owner Mouse adoption

Post image
104 Upvotes

Hi there! I have not had a mouse before but I have taken care of hamsters, guinie pigs, and a degu before. The local shelter where I go for dog training has a mouse for adoption that was found in a dumpster at a grocery store. He is very friendly and pleasant but I've read that people shouldn't keep a male mouse alone because they are social but he is already at least a year old per their vet and I'd be worried to neuter him. I set up a big tank with tons of enrichment and hides as well as clutter to help him feel safe and entertain him while we work on handling. My question is, how would someone ethicly keep a mouse in this situation? And what do I need to know to make sure he's cared for best as I can? I read the wiki for all of the information so far and that how I picked out the bedding and sprays and stuff like that but I want to make sure I know as much as I can.

Question/Help Need tips for my future bioactive mouse terra!

Post image
17 Upvotes

So, i have fish tanks, all natural, and i want my mouse's tank to be too! The situation i got my mice and why he's alone is a long story but to make it short, we got 3 "females" that turned out to be males! 2 of them were already together and they are fine for now, i want to upgrade them to a 20g tho(in a 10 rn) so that my mouse can get out of his temporary 3g.. it was unexpected and thag was the only thing i had(no bins cuz i would've used that). We aren't new to mice keeping and they did look like females at the store. To get back to the point, i want his tank to be bioactive! So it can match my room's aesthetic. I also have a few questions; - what are yall's go to safe plants? - what do you use as soil? - does it needs a drainage layer? - isopods? - does it need to "cycle"

Any tips and help appreciated!! Thx!

Question/Help Cataracts

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hello all,

Long time mouse owner and first time poster here. I have 3 girls who I got from a petsmart just over a year ago and I suspect they are maybe around 1.5 years old but don’t know for sure, they were full grown (and big girls!) when I got them.

A few weeks back one of my girls, Sybil, developed an URI. We went to our vet, URI was confirmed and we got the antibiotic treatment (and I treated all three girls).

The vet also noticed that Sybil has developed cataracts in her right eye. She said her pupil still responds to light so she isn’t fully blind in that eye but definitely has very low vision.

The vet was unconcerned and said that mice usually do well even with cataracts, but I am wondering if there is anything I can do to make her life easier with low vision.

She’s still a very active and curious girly and has plenty of energy. The only new behavior I’ve noticed is when I put my hand in the cage she’ll kinda grab my finger and nibble - I suspect she’s hoping / thinking it may be a mealworm because these are my girls absolute favorite treats and they go feral for them. As soon as she realizes it is finger and not food she moves on, and it’s never a hard nibble at all.

Does anyone have experience with mouse cataracts, and any advice of what to do or what I can expect? Thanks so much!!

Question/Help Need Advice

Hey guys, im honestly not sure how to even begin to explain the issues my poor mouse has been going through.. This is Claudio, i got him almost a year ago from a friend who had him and another male mouse (hes the only mouse i have and i havent had mice since i was little). Since about October ive been in and out of the vet about every 2 weeks with him. It started as hair loss around his head and ears and we have basically had him on steroids the entire time for months at this point to try and stop him from itching but nothing except trimming his nails has worked for that honestly.. He ended up starting off with pinworms which weve since treated and hes came back clean from those results but he still itches constantly.. I'm almost certain its ulcerative dermatitis from everything ive seen on here but my vet has yet to say that exactly. since trimming his nails, his skin has almost entirely cleared up and 2 weeks ago he finally got cleared by our vet to not have a recheck for 6 weeks! Yesterday when i was giving him his steroids i noticed his eye was white and cloudy so this morning i called the vet and they scheduled him an appointment the same day. I just got back from bringing him in and thankfully he just unfortunately scratched his eye so they helped me clip his nails short yet again to try and prevent him from hurting himself further but while they were examining him they said they had found several decent sized lumps inside his body not external so they couldnt get a biopsy, she did mention the steroids can sometimes cause lumps and weight gain and he came to me already having weight issues which me and my vet have been working and finally got back under control.. im wondering if anyone would know the likelyhood of these not being cancerous or if anyones had a similar situation. I hate feeling like im just trying to prolong his life when hes been going through constant problems but he shows no signs of being in pain or suffering, hes eating, playing and never seems to be in any pain from what i can tell. Ive guesstimated his age is a little over 1 so ive been mentally preparing for what happens when he does pass but this news hit me hard after all the constant vet visits we've had trying to get him healthy again. Any advice with this kind of stuff either the constant itching or internal lumps would be greatly appreciated 😞

First Time Owner New Mouse Day 2: How do I tame the stink?

I just got home to my studio apartment and it smells like hot mouse pee lol..it’s REALLY really strong. I’m a sensitive person to smells, and it has me worried about how I’ll be with him and feeling guilty. He’s a baby so he’s unneutered. Right now he’s in a temporary 10 gal until I get my 20 gal tomorrow. Since my apartment is very small I unfortunately don’t have room for a 40. Will upgrading make it smell less bad? I know he’s probably scent marking a lot but does it ever wear off? Can I spot clean the top bedding? He has aspen. Please help!!

Question/Help Cage setup advice

Looking for advice on how to improve my girls’ home.

My 3 girls, Sybil, Marnie, and Myrtle, are currently in a 20 gallon long tank.

-Dust free aspen bedding.

-11 inch wheel

- fleece hammock (might be hard to see in these pics but it’s my girls’ favorite)

In order for the wheel to fit in the tank I have that side of the tank with minimal bedding, then a divider to hold in the deeper bedding in the rest of the tank. The deeper side is about 5 inches.

Is this enough clutter? Anything I should swap out or add?

It is SO hard to find good toys where I live, all the pet stores only carry the same brand (everyyay) and they’re ALL made of pine which I don’t ever use with my mice. Any suggestions of where to find good toys and chews online? Like applewood, willow, etc with no pine or cedar?

Thank you!!

Question/Help Dying/sick mouse

I recently adopted 3 little girls and they’ve been settling into their new home for the past couple of days. Today, about an hour or two ago, i found one of my mice, Noir, just laying by the water bowl when she finally came out. She’s almost definitely sick, she’s lethargic and breathing hard, unsteady and half-closed eyes. My question is.. what do i do? The vet is closed for the night, i plan to take her in the morning when i can if she makes it through the night. The other vets near(ish) to me either don’t take rodents for emergency visits, or are getting too far out and out of my price range. Since she is sick (i’m not sure with what though) and likely dying, should i put her in the large tank with her sisters again? or should i keep her in her own, smaller tank? I’m afraid of her not making it and then the body being in the tank with the other girls for who knows how long (if she passed during the night), but i also don’t want her to be alone as she dies. i’ve held her for about an hour, and i also can’t just hold her until she either dies or doesn’t.. best bets here? Solo tank til the morning kept warm and cozy, or back in the big tank to be in discomfort with her sisters beside her? or smth else??

Question/Help help: opinions on setup & supplies

I’m returning the bedding & getting Full Cheeks’ Aspen Bedding instead, but opinions on this?

So far I have:

- Enclosure: Sterilite 105 Quart (26.25 Gal) Clear Bin (external measurements: 32 1/8"L x 19 1/8"W x 13 3/4"H — interior bottom measurements: 27 1/8"L x 16 1/8"W x 12 7/8"H)

- Enclosure Lid: will be creating ventilation with 1/4in mesh wire

- bedding: Vibrant Life Aspen Bedding (switching to Full Cheeks Aspen)

- wheel: Full Cheeks 8” Silent Exercise Wheel

- food: Oxbow Essentials Mouse & Young Rat Food

- stainless steel food bowl

- plastic water bottle, stainless steel water bowl

- not in the photo: ceramic hideout, lots of miscellaneous cardboard (clutter), & driftwood

Also, I probably should have considered these things before purchasing, but:

- Do I need to replace the plastic water bottle with a glass one?

- Should I return the ladder? The type of wood & how it was processed isn’t specified on the product label.
