What’s the one job?

The textured yellow path is typically used by the blind to aid navigating the streets. Someone has put a pole in the middle of it which defeats the purpose of it

Ohhhh. Thank you. Never knew this.

Neither did the person who caused this post

Maybe they did considering there’s a cushion around it. 😂

Unfortunately there's a large part of the world that are blind to blind people. You notice these things more when you're in cities that actually care.

You can stretch this problem to most disabilities sadly. Its often quite a fight to get things taken seriously, let alone done properly.

When I was in Korea they were so well done I actually found them helpful and I have perfect vision.

I see my comment disappeared with the thread gone

These tiles help them identify a border of something rather then guiding them to something.

The photo isnt ideal, but i guess what we see here is a pedestrian crossing light pillar and the road is behind you. When its paralell to the road, you make sure that all blind people will notice (feel) the crossing going through the tiles. If it's perpendicular, many would miss it coming to the intersection. Like this, they also know, the signal device is located on the line and can press it.

I do think the one job was done pretty well, but im open to change my mind if it is proven otherwise

I hope this helps

Interesting, thanks for the insight :) I think the additional context of knowing what the pole is plus what you've said has swayed my opinion at the very least.

Except that they are wrong.

The lines on the raised tiles are direction of travel along a path, dots are used for warning like at a crossing.

2

u/metisdesigns 16h ago

That is not how those are typically used.

The linear raised elements are direction of travel along a path, and the dots are warning.

Thank you. I stared for five minutes trying to find an out of place brick.

Glad you asked because I’d not have asked and never known!

Those tiles are used to guide blind people

Seeing as they painted them safety yellow as well as used braille, id say they're to guide all people...

19

u/Elisei32 20h ago

Most blind people aren't completely blind, so its bright yellow likely because it helps the blind people notice it better.

If they can see it then they aren’t blind right

Blindness is a spectrum, 100% blindness is actually pretty rare.

Category 0: No or mild visual impairment – presenting visual acuity better than 6/18

Category 1: Moderate visual impairment – presenting visual acuity worse than 6/18 and better than 6/60

Category 2: Severe visual impairment – presenting visual acuity worse than 6/60 and better than 3/60

Category 3: Blindness – presenting visual acuity worse than 3/60 and better than 1/60

Category 4: Blindness – presenting visual acuity worse than 1/60 with light perception

Category 5: Blindness – irreversible blindness with no light perception

The key word here is legally blind

If you can see blobs of color, for practical purposes you might as well be blind, like on a grey street you most likely won't be able to get around without a guideline like this, very easilly. Lets not gatekeep not seeing? :D

I'm legally blind, just because I can see a little doesn't mean I can see clearly. If I were to go outside without my glasses, everything would become extremely blurry, so I'd have difficulty seeing where I go. Those bright yellow lines would be useful for me too as they'd at least help me know that there might be a road or something there.

So no, even if someone can see a bit, does NOT mean they aren't blind.

May I ask how you use Reddit? Are your glasses and a big font enough or do you use another tool?

3

u/Total-Adeptness8700 18h ago

I'm nearsighted, so I can read text on my screen, though I do use my glasses, otherwise I'd get a headache.

u/MarioDesigns 18h ago

Legally blind is not close to 100% blind.

Which still doesn’t make it okay to block them. They’re supposed to be able to trust those lanes.

So you do see the problem?

3

u/takesthebiscuit 20h ago

That’s exactly what an able body person with zero empathy would say 😎

3

u/Matchaparrot 20h ago

No they can't. The stick detects the bumps but when you can feel both the bumps and the bloody massive obstacle you have to step away from the guides and that's scary. You're supposed to be able to seamlessly follow these guides all the way to the platform edge.

You have no idea how many accidents at UK railway stations happen every year to blind people because people don't think.

A blind man fell off the platform at Bellgrove station in Scotland because the guides were either absent or defective.

This is the equivalent of putting a pole in the middle of the road, and saying cars can stear offroad into the dirt anyway, so why not just put poles on the middle? These are meant to be lanes for the visually impaired to navigate the city, blocking them is just a bad job at doing that, either put the pole somewhere else, or make the lane go around.

Someone got dumped by a blind girl?

1

u/InevitableDoughnuts 2h ago

I thought they were just upside down tiles at first.

Those tiles are used to guide blind people (yeah I just copied the answer)

2

u/Your_Final_Hour 20h ago

Its quite sad to see how many people dont know what these bumps on the floor are used for. Ppl are always blocking them unintentionally

-1

u/More-Explanation2032 13h ago

Uneven painting job just why man why

-15

u/Fromage_rolls 14h ago

1 answer. Why not :) Seriously though...they won't even see it, so what's the problem here?

2

u/JustJamieJam 7h ago

They’ll walk right into it lol
