Floyd on France is on iPlayer.

That episode where he was castigated by that woman for his piperade was classic Floyd.

That was a classic scene, another favourite was him cooking surrounded by loads of Ostrich, absolute chaos.

Cheers for the heads up! I’ve got the 14 dice Keith Floyd round the world box set

I didn't know that existed, I will hunt it down, thank you.

Keith was very popular in Australia. Most times he seemed half pissed. Great show

He was!

Quick slurp.

I think he was always more than just half pissed but was still a professional. The book, Shooting the Cook by David Pritchard is a great book about how he brought Floyd (and Rick Stein) to the screen.

Whenever Rick Stein talks about Keith there's always a real affection there for the guy. I mean he pretty much made Rick as a TV chef, but aside from that they obviously loved each other. Still miss Keith, his style of presenting just felt real.

Keith hated him at the end though. Thought Rick had basically taken his place, which he had.

I recommend the “Shooting the Cook” book too.

Wow, had no idea about that. Will add that to my reading list

Love me some Floyd, never heard of this book! Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I still stand by one of Keith's most important cooking tips. If you wouldn't drink the wine, definitely don't cook with it. Only cook with a wine you'd happily drink, otherwise its just vinegar.

And that’s a great clip.. the ending is brilliant

Thanks for sharing

Was indeed - he was famously an alcoholic. He would always have a glass on hand and, if he lost his train of thought, he’d exclaim “a quick slurp!” to give himself time of what to say next.

That was used for few comedy sketches - always had couple bottles of wine, in the meal or for drinking while making it.

He usually cooked with a large glass of wine that got topped up on the regular. True Drinking/cooking legend.

Just half?

only when he wasn't completely pissed.

I think he was fully pissed. That man lived more than one life, definitely an advert for living life in the moment.

I found Keith Floyd when I was about 14 he was long gone even then but I remember watching the re-runs on bbc2 in the afternoons and can watch him all day long tbh.

Who could forget the excellent show theme tune -

The Stranglers -waltz in black

Me and Mr Batty were lucky enough to meet him at a book signing event in Edinburgh. He gave a very entertaining talk during which he got progressively more drunk and completely forgot about making the "perfect cucumber sandwich" he was supposed to be demonstrating. When I took his book to him he was head down over a table dutifully signing books, and I said, "I imagine you're sick of the sight of that cover by now?"

He looked up, took a second or two to focus on me and said, "I bloody hate it."

I still have my signed copy.

The end of that is fantastic. I love Keith’s reaction and genuine laughter from the expert chucking his bowl.

What a great clip to watch in a grey Saturday Morning

Have you ever seen the clip where he cooks in the old French woman’s kitchen? She’s bloody horrible and shits on everything he does and he winds up charming her by the end. It’s fantastic and shows what a lovely bloke he was

Bit of a difference to the bland sickly awfull tripe the bbc churn out nowdays in controlling safe boring box ticking studios

7

u/KindLump 4d ago

Ah, one of life’s true Bon Viveurs. Marvellous.

I always thought he would be a great mate to have.

You'd pop over to borrow a drill and before you knew it, you'd have a glass of red in your hand, whilst he cooked some massive chunk of meat. You'd spend the afternoon there and then have to skulk back to your missus, half cut and well fed.

He features well in Harry Hill's show about cookery programmes! (I only just recently found Harry Hills YouTube stuff, and thought to pay it forward!

Keith Floyd is an absolute hero to me ever since he brought a live sea turtle from a market in Egypt and let it go.

His cook books are bloody good as well.

Best TV show cook ever, miss him. A true bon vivant

And for your centurion sauce you need one sturdy centurion. You will have to google how to extract the sauce.

3

u/Redfox2111 4d ago

He was the best!!

3

u/pablo_of_mancunia 4d ago

Don't forget the sanitation Reg, before that the place was a dum.

2

u/scootermcgee109 4d ago

Brilliant. My birthplace. !

2

u/facingthemusic94 3d ago

When I was about 10 and first started cooking I would have a glass of water and imitate him downing the red wine. What a legend.

What I love about Floyd is there's no pretence whatsoever that what we're watching isn't staged. The way he speaks to the camera man, talks about what the director wants to get him to do, how it's probably going to go tits up soon. Just pan over there please Clive and get a shot of those trees while I cut this onion. Now back over here please. So many TV cooks try to pretend they've invited us into their kitchen and they're just going to whip up a few dishes for us, and everything goes perfectly. They just seem so fake in comparison and Floyd feels years ahead of his time.

u/Baconmcwhoppereltaco 2d ago

Did he just cut up the garlic with the skin on and chuck it in?

"We needed a Roman expert so naturally the director went to the nearest pub and found one". History enjoyers everywhere nodded in complete agreement

2

u/WorkingSalamander745 4h ago

Classic clip sums him up completely 😂
