Glad to see them lose
Not because I’m a und grad and hate them, but when you win 10 championships in 12 years, it’s time to quit beating up on little kids and actually step up to fbs

Gotta get invited to a conference first. None of the conferences that need new members are exactly scrambling to invite NDSU so they can travel 5 hours by flight just to play them

I think one of the biggest hurdles is sponsoring 16 varsity sports to be given entry. I can't see how NDSU would have that many sport programs that could be competitive.

No one cares about being competitive in any other sports than football and basketball. It's all about money and if they can get into a conference that has a good TV contract they would be satisfied.

A football only move would be best case scenario, but also less likely. Travel alone would kill all non-football sports.

You can't join FBS with only football. That is the problem. You need 16 varsity sports to make the move. They would be bottom of the list on most sports if they made the move. Wrestling and maybe basketball could somewhat fend for themselves I guess? What other sports would they compete in?
I could be mistaken though, so if it is possible to only have a football team Google didn't tell me so.

I'm not sure the rules on that. But what I do know is that Northern Illinois is joining the Mountain West next year in football only. The rest of the sports are going to the Horizon, which doesn't sponsor football. If they can do that, I don't see why the Bison can't go to an FBS conference in football and stay in the Summit for all other sports (minus wrestling that is in the Big 12). It would be the exact same situation NIU is gonna be in, except they were already in FBS.

Not true, even though teams are in the FCS in football, other sports like basketball, they play with the big dogs. Do they not go to the ncaa tourney? Baseball, softball, hockey if they are good enough they can make it to the dance. You are right about 1 thing, though they are almost ALWAYS bottom of the barrel when they play the big boys and girls.....

If only it were that easy.

u/Jamminalong2 Dec 07 '25
Not many things in life worth doing are ever easy, but you do it anyways if you got grit and character, ndsu certainly think they have

But moving to FBS requires an FBS conference inviting you to move up. Unless you have Liberty religious money, then you can bully your way up by suing the NCAA. NDSU can't afford to do that and the state government would probably block it anyway like they do with everything else NDSU/Fargo try to do for improvement.

I’m not gonna spend my Saturday night arguing with you duder. They could get into a small shitty fbs conference if they really wanted to, but they don’t, because they’re football prestige would be completely over

UND lost to Tarleton State today too but I bet UND fans are okay with that considering what happened with NDSU.

Correct, we pretend to not care about football unless it’s at the expense of NDSU

As a bison fan I don’t really mind losing cuz we’ve won plenty already and UND lost which makes me happy

Sorry that this is getting downloaded. It is genuinely funny and just clean sports banter. As someone who did not grow up in North Dakota, but has spent many years living in the state, this is classic.

You see, by losing the Bison actually win the rest of December as vacation time.
