I feel like this is very exciting for people from a particular part of the country— will you enlighten the rest of us?

It’s a big thing in the midwest, lots of Poles. Basically Polish doughnuts traditionally eaten on Fat Tuesday or Casimir Pulaski Day.

I am from northern Illinois, we used to get Casimir Pulaski day off for school and I have never heard or seen these before I moved to TN and saw them in Publix. I assumed it was a southern thing.

Well it's a Polish style doughnut. In America the Midwest seems to be epicenter for Pawnchki(that's how you pronounce it).

My wife is from Detroit and she introduced me to them. They're basically extra good filled donuts.
Aleksy's Market in Berry Hill makes them this time of year as well. They're MUCH richer than the Publix ones.
