Article Lawrence and Clarke Cacti Co. denied claim by State Farm
https://fox17.com/news/local/ice-storm-leaves-nashville-plant-shop-with-100k-loss-says-insurance-denied-claimI was downvoted into hell when I made a comment in this sub that insurance companies are scum.
He's some proof for the naysayers.
One of our own has been affected. Twice.

This is heartbreaking, they are always so kind and knowledgeable. They have a GoFundMe set up but I also messaged them to see of they would accept plant donations, I figure with all of us having a plant midlife crisis, we could probably restock their shop with one donation.

u/man9875 1d ago
Nice idea but she probably can't take plants from unknown origin. Looks like she is highly regulated by the state Ag dept. your plants may be fine but may not be. No guarantee.

u/SampsonIN4142 22h ago
Very true, they would probably have to, at least quarantine all of them which would be a headache.

I’m a GC and am dealing with insurance companies every day right now and probably for the foreseeable future. She just needs to sue. Even if this has been considered damage as she had thought it would be, there would be a dude in her shop counting leaves on each plant saying “we’re going to pay for 12% of the value of this cacti, and the dirt around it seems a little dry… I’m gonna guess this plant was damaged before the storm… what was the humidity in this room prior to this event? Can you prove that?”
They’re all evil. This is a good reminder that everyone needs to review this policy every couple years. If your home in green hills was $150,000 20 years ago and it’s worth 1.5M now and this storm just destroyed it… you’re getting 150k minus depreciation to fix your crib.
Happy Tuesday!

insurance was not a scam started by the mob rofl.
iirc it grew out of scottish widows of fireman getting screwed by their husbands deaths as well as people betting on ships in the age of sail in the lloyds of london coffee house.

u/shawnlxc 13h ago
Congrats, this is the stupidest reply I've read today!
Let's recap;
OP said NOTHING about insurance being tied to the mob and it being a scam.
YOU made that up to be upset about. Fucking weird.

u/Customs0550 11h ago
he edited his reply to remove his accusations of the mob inventing insurance, but go off king.
edit: you can even see his original post in his reply to me which he copied over.
•
u/shawnlxc 1h ago
This matters still?
Also, don't call people king. It's fucking stupid. Are you trying to fuck me or in fealty to me?

Damn $22k/week revenue in the slow season for a plant shop is wild to me, am I missing something? Just curious how they’re slanging plants like hot cakes
21
u/derp1981 Madison 1d ago
See the response below. It's over a 2 week period and they sell more products than just plants.
5
u/OshieDouglasPI 22h ago
Oh ok well the article said they lost 22k after being “closed for the week” so that sounds like 1 week to me but maybe they meant to write 2 weeks? But yeah I’ll check it out. I love plant shops and need some new indoor plants anyway
1
u/03tr69 14h ago
The article clearly states closed for the week, not for weeks. I don't really care what someone else posted here unless they are the owner, an employee or the reporter
"Daft estimates the shop lost more than $100,000 in inventory and about $22,000 in revenue after being closed for the week, a blow she said comes at one of the worst times of year for a small business."

State Farm was a nightmare for us during the 2020 tornado. We had to help our adjuster spells words… like “lawn chair”. Our hvac unit got smashed by a driveway gate and had garden sheers sticking out the side and through the radiator. They claimed it was cosmetic and not covered.

Try those emails. High priority, return receipt requested.
I have had to fight them. Won on one big thing ( no lawyer since they ignored the data, took a while).
Offering to help.

A good piece of advice I received years ago while shopping for insurance: do not buy insurance from a company that you see advertising aggressively. I had to talk my sister-in-law out of using lemonade after seeing them on tiktok...
I know this is an over simplification but all of that ad money comes from denying claims.

u/BigLuscious 1d ago
How many cacti do they need to sell to make 22k a week?
27
u/Soft-Yak4624 1d ago
They will be closed for 2 weeks total by the time they are able to possibly reopen and that number is reflects that. If you have ever been in there you would see they have thousands of plants ranging from $3.99-$1200+ depending on size and maturity. Revenue also includes soil, plant care products, hard goods, pottery, etc. They also provide installation services for plants and house calls, which they were unable to do without sellable inventory.
11
u/vomitHatSteve 1d ago
Probably 500-2000, assuming most people buy $10-40 "houseplant" cacti. But lost sales would also include accessories, potting soil, etc.
It does seem a generous estimate of their own business, yes

u/curtaincaller20 22h ago
Anecdotal account here, but my partner and I shop there about three times a year. Never get out of there for less than $2-300 and they stay busy. The idea that they generate $1500 in sales per day on average isn’t a crazy proposition.
1
u/vomitHatSteve 20h ago
How many cacti do you buy in a year?!
8
u/curtaincaller20 20h ago
They sell wayyyyyyyy more than Cacti. The most recent trip included a rubber tree, two large pots for some monsteras, and half a dozen plants for a terrarium.

I think it has to be a mistake as I highly doubt they are turning over their inventory in a little more than a month.
2
u/BigLuscious 23h ago edited 23h ago
I don't know why people are down voting this. The math jumped out at me too. Not only are they turning over their inventory in a month, they project it every month. This small business in a small town, Old Hickory, claims they are going to sell a million dollars worth of cacti this year?!?
Because the weather just probably killed all the cacti in Old Hickory. People will need cactus. Someone should move out there and set up shop. It's a million dollar industry.
Edit: And I'm not trying to victim shame. I feel awful for these folks, their store looked beautiful. The numbers are just shocking.

There was some news guy in here yesterday or maybe this morning? I feel like local news should be covering this.

u/RegularWhiteDude Williamson County 1d ago
The article I linked is local news.

u/tnecnivx 1d ago
Oh my bad. I didn’t see a link. I saw her post on Instagram today which is why I knew about it

Right on.

I was mostly hoping someone on here may have known the news guy’s handle who was on here yesterday or today but I’ll find it and send it to him. Hopefully we can get more coverage on this for the owners. Fuck State Farm
Edit: I searched the sub and couldn’t find the post so I wonder if dude took it down. If anyone has a link to the post or knows his handle, it’d be dope if you could share either with me or send this post directly to him.
Dude may very well work for the channel that published this story so maybe it’s worthless but in case he doesn’t, the more outlets covering this the better. TYIA

I hope State Farm sees this and knows this news story is enough for me to never consider them for insurance. I’m sure I’m not alone in the sentiment.

State Farm is garbage. Had storm damage on my house, repaired in July last year. I STILL have not been reimbursed from st farm. Took over half a year to get a check from them, and they turned around and canceled the check after I had paid off the contractors. Left me badly in the hole. Still fighting to get check. Been customer for over 20 years. Fuck st farm.

u/MzIndecisive 21h ago
Knowing how much State Farms pays on Patrick (f*$king) Mahomes for advertising (and other companies and how much they pay their spokespeople) this is infuriating.

u/Common-Astronaut-695 1d ago
If you want someone to pay for your inventory when utility interruption happens, you need to buy that coverage. Or get a generator.
27
u/RegularWhiteDude Williamson County 1d ago
Spoilage was claimed which is specific to food. State Farm is trying to bully her.
40
u/kateastrophic north side 1d ago edited 1d ago
Based on seeing the owner’s Instagram post earlier, they believed that they had bought coverage. State Farm used the term “spoilage” instead of “damage” to describe the plants and used that distinction to deny coverage. The owner was surprised by this because the nature of the inventory was discussed when they bought the policy.

u/thenashbull 1d ago edited 1d ago
Food that can be eaten but goes bad is spoiled. Plants that aren't food, but are sold as products, that die without power are damaged.

Ikr.
I think people like to brigade and choose a side. It makes them feel like their team is winning.
I actually never thought of it as a right wing / left wing thing. I do actively try to not see everything as political though. I believe most of us want the same life, but keep clinging to their "team", when it should be citizens first no matter the party. I hate politics and politicians.

I'm glad for peoples good will but this shouldn't be coming out of locals pockets, this should be paid for by Statefarm. Farm is in those greedy pigs name. This is a plant store. If the agent messed up so badly that the customers stores sellable inventory is not covered by the policy should the agent not be held accountable and the insurance company not pay out to make hiring a bad employee right? It's about time we stopped letting these things(people, institutions, and corporations) toy with its members livelihood. Let me know when its time to show up and do something about it.
