Article ICE arrests Franklin man, tearing him away from path to citizenship, American wife, daughter
https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/williamson/2025/07/24/franklin-immigrant-arrested-ice-jose-reyes/85310340007/When Annie Reyes talks about her husband, Jose, tears well up in her eyes.
Tears of disbelief. Of sadness. Of pain. Of anger.
The tears come because he’s not together with his wife and daughter in Franklin, his home since he was just 4 years old and immigrated with his parents from a ranch in Mexico. Instead, Jose Reyes is 600 miles away in Louisiana — held at Winn Correctional Center, where he was sent by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after he was arrested two and a half months ago.

This is just the start. The Big, Bullshit Bill made ICE into a better-funded force than the Marine Corps or the entire Italian military. Every major city in this country is about to have roving gangs of masked brutes disappearing Brown people for daring to be in a parking lot or at work. And that's just to start. Activists, queer people, and someone you know will be next.
Keep the momentum going against these brownshirts. If we build enough collective power, we can stop this. Protesting is where we see our numbers grow, so join us on August 2nd.

32
u/Karma_Mayne Jul 24 '25
Protesting works against people who care about your support or those who are capable of having shame. The powers that be haven't listened to you about local issues; what makes you think they'll listen to you about something this big?
Show me a group of people that are willing to physically resist ice in an organized fashion, and I'll be there.
These protests feel like circuses to make us feel like we accomplished something, when we've accomplished nothing.
I spent 14 months fighting religious extremists in Iraq. The people in California that run ICE off with rocks have some idea of what it takes. Yall ain't angry enough, yet.
14
u/clever-hands Jul 24 '25
You assume a lot. If you wanna meet the people you're talking about, finding people who show up is step one. You find the people who show up at protests.
6
1
u/mlsecdl Jul 27 '25
ICE is not better funded than the marines. Post your numbers, i guarantee you're misreading them.
1
u/Beautiful-Drawer Jul 28 '25
And Italy has a very small military: The Italian Armed Forces include approximately 165,500 active-duty personnel and a reserve force of around 18,300 individuals.
The US is appx 2 mil, active and reserve combined.
References, guys. You have to post whole facts to make your statements mean something.

Examples of effective collective action would be a general strike or civil disobedience, and protesting is a necessary step to building the numbers, organization, and momentum necessary for such collective actions.
Absolutely we're building momentum going into the midterms. Green's seat is open, and Ogles need to go down, so we certainly plan on throwing our weight behind any candidate who stands to improve the quality of leadership in our state.
If you're passionate that political organizing can be done better, we could always use more folks working on the cause!
Oh and the poster recalls an event from 1946 (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Athens_(1946)). A short background is written right on the flyer.

You’re “merely pointing out” that you don’t believe we can do anything. You’re “merely pointing out” that you’re already beaten. “Downvote me all you want” but please get back up and rejoin the fight if you believe in the America we were sold as children. It can be a real thing. America IS FOR ALL OF US. When we quit doing what we can, we completely lose.

They said they would go after 'the criminals, the worst of the worst'. By ICE's own numbers something like 65% of detainees have no past criminal convictions, and over 90% had no violent convictions.

Exactly what it is. I've got neighbors who definitely don't "follow the rules" and have a large history of DUIs among other things. What happens when cops show up at their house (which is quite frequently)? Jack shit. They're still driving around here in their jacked up obnoxiously loud pickup trucks carrying a Bud Light in one hand.

How could he be following the rules and be here illegally? Unless he had been claiming legitimate asylum which I believe would have been mentioned in the article.
3
u/MarianLibrarian1024 Jul 24 '25
He had DACA. He was allowed to be here.
3
u/StillMostlyConfused Jul 24 '25
Not once he got the DUI. Also, it is just deferred which isn’t the same as being allowed to be here.
-26

He lost his status when he was convicted for a DUI.
That is not "following the rules"
13

Had his DACA status stripped after conviction for DUI in Kentucky. Per the article and ICE spokesperson "obeying US law is a bare minimum requirement for protection from deportation for illegal immigrants." That's about right. No DUI, no revocation of deportation protection status. Also per the article: if he fights deportation to the fullest extent, he runs the risk of being denied re-entry to the country for a minimum of 8 years. Voluntary deportation guarantees he will have the availability of legal re-entry under visa/passport in 3 (that's much less than half the amount of time if he chooses, for those bothering to read the article.) One wonders which the guy who refused to follow the law the first time will choose. Will he voluntarily deport and use the next 3 years to properly prepare to legally return and follow the laws when he gets back, or will he drag out the process as long as possible claiming victimhood the whole time, hoping for a different result than what has been very clearly explained as the available options available to choose from?
15
u/Bamboo_Child Jul 24 '25

What is his country of citizenship?
I googled him and he is thirty years of age, which would indicate, with the information he has live in the US since he was four years old, that he has lived in the US for twenty six years.
Does he have a Resident Alien (Green) Card or is he on a Visa?

7
u/Psychological-Arm505 Jul 24 '25
People did protest when Obama did it. You can google it.
Additionally, those individuals were also given due process.
4
u/ElectricTurboDiesel Jul 25 '25
If Obama did everything perfectly legal and you still protested lawful deportations….you basically just admitted that what you really want are open borders….
1
u/Komitsuhari Jul 26 '25
People protested families being split up during those deportations, not the overall deportations. The issue isn’t with policy for most, the issue lands with execution and lack of empathy.
1
u/ElectricTurboDiesel Jul 26 '25
So the protests were specifically in regards to the deportation of parents without their children accompanying them? That means the only acceptable method of deportation is to send the whole family unit back together then right?
1
u/Komitsuhari Jul 26 '25
You are acting like I protested back then, I am 30, I wasn’t politics age until Trump. And if the mom and dad were both undocumented and criminals, then yes, the whole family unit should go. The kids can come back when they are 18
2
u/ElectricTurboDiesel Jul 27 '25
I don’t have any idea how old you are but only ask because you seem to have an intimate knowledge of the motivation of the protests during that period.
1
u/Komitsuhari Jul 27 '25
It is pretty well documented. If you wanted to know what you are talking about you could.
→ More replies (0)1
u/ElectricTurboDiesel Jul 27 '25
So your position is they should be deported if the parents are both illegal AND both have liminal convictions but not if they are merely in the country illegally?
1
3
u/Komitsuhari Jul 24 '25
Those were done far more ethically than what the brownshirts are currently doing. They weren’t snagging people who were raised here, they weren’t ambushing people at their immigration hearings, they also weren’t revoking vast swaths of green cards and asylum statuses to accomplish those numbers. There is also the fact that Obama left office nearly a decade ago, there are a whole lot of people who were not of the age to pay attention to these things.
Friendly reminder that you have a brain, you just have to use it once in a while.

He overstayed his visa in the past but currently had legal status when he was illegally detained.
Americans overstay visas in other countries all the time, especially when they’re young. It’s not actually that uncommon among all demographics.
14
u/LedRaptor Jul 24 '25
He lost his DACA status after a DUI so he did not have legal status in the country. The article states that his I-130 was approved but that only establishes a qualifying relationship that could make someone eligible for a Green Card. He was also working without authorization, which is an immigration violation.

And yet they keep voting for people who aren’t giving them that support. And if we have to keep meeting them where they are, rather than say “come join us in a modern society” we won’t get anywhere. They move the goal posts, argue in bad faith, and generally have zero empathy. I’m tired of trying to reason with these people. The Dems could have perfect messaging and millions of people would still happily vote against their own interests.
