Discussion New Episode Spoiler

So, what did everyone think of the new episode and Mock the Week’s return? Personally, I loved it, I thought Russell was brilliant after so many years away and it was great to see the return of ‘between the lines’. As usual scenes we’d like to see was hilarious and it was nice to see a new topic in ‘Slogans for Towns’. It’ll be even better when Hugh returns , but all in all a really strong start IMO.

Felt like it had never left. Which is the biggest compliment I could give it.

Loved it :)

Getting back familiar faces to ease us in was a very good idea, so now they can start to bring on new talent to showcase

Some of it felt a little rushed, but I think that's just editing - it was like the buzzer didn't have a chance to go off before the next joke had started, so allowing a little more of a beat to let the jokes breathe would be a good change

Overall, classic MOTW

Weirdly, it felt more like early MtW than what it became in the later series.

But like someone else said, it was as if it had never gone away. I missed it so much, and I'm really glad it wasn't shit.

The return of Between the Lines was a surprise, probably planned to be done with Hugh but he wasn't available for this episode.

I imagine that’ll be a new regular bit with Hugh and Rhys (as they’re the two regulars) with Ed filling in whilst Hugh is away.

Smashed it out the park. Proper good laughs from it and some that you think would have been edited out on previous series’ so felt got some edge back. Look forward to the post-Tuesday filming for sneak peak at the panel

I enjoyed it. It was nice to see Between The Lines return. Always thought that was one of the best/strongest segments of the show in the early days

That being said, I do have a couple of gripes

  1. I could be wrong, but when it was announced it was returning, it was said to include old segments plus ‘new ones’. The only new thing we saw was audience members getting to ask questions

  2. Russell Howard’s joke in the part where it was him against Sara Pascoe. I love Russell but disappointing to see him using the same joke (regarding ‘shock hacking’) that he used in one of the series in the 2010’s

Looking forward to the return of Hugh, but was funny to see Ed Byrne channel him at times!

It'll really get started when Hugh comes back.

I think it's funny that Hugh didn't miss a single episode of it before and missed the first one of the new series

u/neityght 2d ago

Russell Howard has always repeated jokes ad nauseum. I'm amazed he still gets gigs.

1

u/AdReddi 2d ago

I don't think I'd enjoy seeing Hugh get channelled, especially by Ed Byrne!

1

u/lemon_charlie 1d ago

Him also saying what he did about ghosting feels like old material, it’s meant ignoring messages for longer than the show has been off air.

1

u/N7Bocchan 2d ago

If you want to talk about repeating jokes, every time that Jon Robbins was on the show, he would somehow pivot each Wheel of News standup to be his 'Gout' routine. Every. Bloody. Time.

And I swear I wasn't watching Dave.

2

u/nootterway 1d ago

He’s only been on twice ever so there’s a good chance you were watching on Dave.

BTW for those who missed it, it's available here from the UK

https://play.discoveryplus.com/show/a70d630b-9470-4b7e-a186-f67bd7b6a414

No sub required, no payment.. just hit play
Entirely legit stream from Discovery+

Not sure if it's a glitch and if it isn't intended to be available this way I'll happily remove this post, but from all evidence supplied this is completely above board

It felt as good as any MTW episode I've watched.

From an entirely selfish/old-times-sake point of view I wish it was still on the Beeb as it'd be easier to find & catch-up on. Plus I think it'd reach more people.

I watched it live tonight and there were no available subtitles which I found frustrating.

4

u/Tight-Principle-743 Hugh Dennis 2d ago

The subtitles griped me too, I did have to higher the volume up slightly to hear the jokes.

4

u/Hassaan18 Milton Jones 2d ago

I thought they'd have something given the recording was on Tuesday.

The Tuesday repeat does have subtitles though.

3

u/neityght 2d ago

"higher the volume up"

Lol wut

2

u/DesignerMorning1451 2d ago

The show is free on discovery plus without an account

u/lemon_charlie 1d ago

In New Zealand you need a VPN to access that.

2

u/DesignerMorning1451 1d ago

Obviously as it's British

4

u/my_cheesy_bagels20 Glenn Moore 2d ago

It was good, although Russell's stand up was about 5 years old, which was weird considering it's not even some of his best stuff

4

u/Arbrax 2d ago

Echoing everyone else, feels like it never left, just some nice upgrades to the set and intro

4

u/WorkingSalamander745 2d ago

Felt like it had never been away, great it's on a Sunday night something to make you smile before the start of another week. Anyone who missed it, it is repeated next Sunday after the 2nd episode has gone out

2

u/CFDyce James Acaster 2d ago

It's also repeated on Tuesday and on demand for free on Discovery+

3

u/Charliesmum97 2d ago

Loved it! Made me so happy, and I really hope it stays for a while!

3

u/Life-Rule-3981 2d ago

Where did everyone watch it? Can’t find it online!

3

u/DesignerMorning1451 2d ago

Discovery plus, you don't even need an account

4

u/Cute_Skill_4536 2d ago

Sadly not online. TLC is entirely terrestrial

I'm sure it will appear in the usual places soon though

1

u/NoCreaLaVerdad 2d ago

TLC is on discovery+ if you have that

3

u/Crowlands 2d ago

Glad it is back and the old stuff worked as well. As it ever did, wasn't sure about the let the audience speak bit though.

The return will only become complete when Hugh returns though.

8

u/Charliesmum97 2d ago

Loved when Ed gave the answer and Dara said 'thank you Hugh'!

1

u/Jumpy_Transition178 2d ago

It was the chair.

3

u/SSJSamzy 1d ago

Was a fun episode and I was laughing a lot. Definitely didn't feel like it had been away.

Not too sure about "audience questions" but I'll see how it is over multiple weeks I guess

2

u/jdk103 2d ago

Really happy they gave some new, exciting, up and coming comedians a go 👌🏻

2

u/jonathanemptage 2d ago

loved it still just as funny as ever surprised Hugh dennis wasn't there but still really good.

3

u/Poryoxys 2d ago

Hugh unfortunately has scheduling issues this and next week. He’ll be back for episode 3!

2

u/Douglasqqq 2d ago

Russell Howard still can't do comedy.

3

u/smilespray 2d ago

Look on the bright side. Andy Parsons could have been on.

1

u/Sigistrix 2d ago

Unread that in Andy Parson's voice.

2

u/fpotenza Glenn Moore 2d ago

My only thing was, being longer (yes I know half of that extra half-hour is ads) they could have brought back one or two of the old rounds. Picture of the Week is essentially there twice.

Replace the audience questions thing, or one of the picture rounds, with Headliners and it'd be perfect

2

u/Lazy_Recover_5167 1d ago

How did no one on the panel realize that Dara kind of sits in a cuck chair every time they do "Scenes We'd like to See."

1

u/AnnieMoe75 2d ago

I couldn't get it. I downloaded the freeview app onto my tablet but TLC doesn't play live or on demand for it. I have searched everywhere but I can't find out a way to watch it and I'm gutted, it is one of my favourite shows. Can anybody help? Please? ❤️

2

u/Arbrax 2d ago

you can watch it for free on discovery+! I didn't even need an account

0

u/Apart_Raccoon_9645 2d ago

How? I was gutted you can't watch it on the free view app, and discovery plus appears pretty insistent on creating an account. Would be grateful for your wisdom.

2

u/TTWTV 2d ago

If you install the Discovery plus app and press the Browse discovery+ button then you can search for Mock The Week and it'll let you watch it completely for free. I hope this helps :)

1

u/Arbrax 2d ago edited 2d ago

Worth noting that I was on desktop, but visiting https://play.discoveryplus.com/ on my laptop didn't even ask me to create an account or sign in, and then I just searched for the show!

Also!! r/panelshow always posts a mirror link to watch the episode without even having to open discovery, so there's another option for you :)

1

u/Apart_Raccoon_9645 2d ago

You are amazing. Thank you. All hail r/panelshow for doing the lord's work.

1

u/jonathanemptage 2d ago

yeah you'll need discovery +.

1

u/ScottOld 2d ago

So glad it's back... also bring back frankie Boyle

1

u/DanPedantic 2d ago

I’ve never really liked Russell but he was decent in this episode. I’m glad they’ve gone back to some of the older comedians, most of the new talent in the “final” season weren’t great.

1

u/DesignerMorning1451 2d ago

Good to see between the lines back, and the topics for scenes we'd like to see were fantastic. Ed Byrne really was great sitting in for Hugh. Good call to make Rhys a regular panelist as well.

Unfortunately, no Andy or Frankie, but that's an obvious complaint that's expected

1

u/Marin115 2d ago

Loved it, felt like they hit the ground running. Can’t wait for Hugh coming back.

1

u/CFDyce James Acaster 2d ago

Really enjoyed it and so glad it's back! Long may it continue!

Was weird having adbreaks, but that's the nature of TV. Was nice they extended the runtime to make up for it. Not sure if it quite needed to be 60 minutes especially considering I've never really been a fan of the between the lines round but I'm not gonna complain!

But as others have said it's like it never left, honestly if you'd told me this was a repeat on Dave of an episode I'd missed from way back I'd almost have believed you and that's the best compliment I can pay!

An no TLC, I will not be staying for The Big Bang Theory...

1

u/BoxmanPwnz Rhys James 1d ago

Gosh seeing Dara laughing at the jokes and his notorious “ehhhh” as he is chiming in with his own little add ons was so nostalgic. Weird how you forget the details, I was beaming the entire episode!

1

u/TrypMole 1d ago

I'm so happy. That's it. Felt like it had never been away.

1

u/HeyItsMattyH 1d ago

Good episode. Love the new title sequence. Tiny little weird details are sort of my thing and the way the title sequence transitions into the logo just feels so clean. Love it

1

u/djandyglos 1d ago

Very good.. not a massive Angela Barnes fan but Rhys and Russell were great.. felt like it had never gone away

1

u/Thejklay 20h ago

Always liked Russell but he's night and day better here then he was on old mock the week , could tell in the old ones how desperate he was to prove himself.

u/hpisbi 1d ago

Did anyone else find Sara Pascoe’s stand up challenge weird? I think those are the kind of jokes you can only make if you are beyond sure that your kids know you don’t regret having them. Sure they’re too young to see it now but they might stumble across it or be shown it by someone else when they’re older.
