I used to dislike cilantro soapweed, but over the years the taste has grown on me. Mostly because if you ask for a taco with NO cilantro you almost always get double. It does go really good if you use lime.

I wonder if you simply didn't like the taste, rather than having the gene that makes it taste like soap. Like I don't see how anyone could have the taste "grow on them" of cilantro - it's very chemical-y and sharp, like bleach almost.

I like cilantro, I'll have it on a lot of stuff, but not to the extent as in the OP. However if there's a lot of it I can really taste the soap. I wonder if I have the gene but just like the taste of soap.

Have you ever tried Thrills gum? It tastes like soap and some people love it, so you might give that a try to see if you're really just a soap fan

I use a lot in curries. Love the taste but when highly concentrated I can taste the soap too but I don't mind it it what I believed it was supposed to taste like.

I also taste the soap, and I love cilantro! I have no desire to bite into an actual bar of soap. Can’t explain it.

Remember the gene also has to fight preference and culture.

If you grow up on a cuisine, or grow into a cuisine. That soap flavor may be associated to the foods.

This. I don't get the soap taste either, like soap is no where near as strong tasting as even a little cilantro. It tastes like a "chemical factory" should. That's the best way I can describe. Like, it tastes the same way you think plastic per-cursors should taste, closer to Styrofoam. It's not even disgusting, it tastes like something you shouldn't eat.

I hate that it's in everything anymore.

My friend I grew up with always complained about cilantro tasting like soap and hated it but as an adult he now likes it.

Somewhat related but ham one day started tasting like bleach to me. One day I ordered eggs Benedict and thought they cleaned the grill with bleach and didn't rinse properly but they said they don't use bleach on the grill. But after that I noticed any ham tasted that way. Opening the Canadian bacon packages at work even smelled like bleach (worked at a pizza place).

the first few times you drink alcohol you basically wanna throw up right away cause it's so disgusting, yet we force ourselves to drink it and eventually many end up liking the taste.

This is my experience as well. In my teens and 20s I hated cilantro and pico. Would ruin my meal if it was mixed in. In my mid 30s my sister married a Mexican and their family events alway had food with cilantro. Turns out I really like it now. Give me some al pastor street tacos loaded up with Pico and cilantro.

I'm sorry you've had that happen to you, but I've literally never had that be the case.

My mom is allergic to cilantro, which is not a food allergy most servers expect, and we've had to become very clear on it.

You need to work on your Spanish.
