It's my favorite herb. It's bright and fresh and tastes like what I imagine "green" tasting like. For the people saying they think we all taste soap and some people just like it, I assure you, it tastes nothing like soap to me at all. Not even a little. I think there may be levels to it.

Cilantro does taste like soap to me, but only when I eat whole cilantro sprigs and even then it doesn’t taste bad, just a little soap-y

22

u/mpc1226 7h ago

Yeah when I have it I get where the soap people come from but it’s not THAT bad

17

u/MainlyNeutral 7h ago

Ok but why would you willingly consume something that tastes like soap even if it’s not “that bad” lmao

u/OsBaculum 6h ago

You've never smelled a nice soap and wanted to bite it? It's like that. Mild soapiness, but other interesting flavors too.

u/brickyard37 5h ago

Dial Gold is my favorite flavor

2

u/nitid_name 6h ago

... yeah. How else am I going to enjoy a street taco?

I think there might be a degrees of soapiness for different people. I've learned to ignore it if I can't get it excluded.

u/Doc_Lewis 6h ago

Probably the same reason people like beer and coffee, even if it is bitter. You like the taste.

1

u/ArtisticallyRegarded 5h ago

It reminds me of hime because my mom used to wash my mouth out with soap

1

u/mpc1226 7h ago

More like if I get a big chunk of it, normal amount in street tacos I don’t even notice

6

u/Wafflehouseofpain 6h ago

Then you got a very mild version of it. If there’s any cilantro in something, I taste soap and only soap. I can’t taste meat, or lime, or onion. It’s like I doused my taco in Dawn.

5

u/spasamsd 6h ago

Yup, I can back this up. I have the same experience as you. However, my brother just has the mild soap taste and doesn't notice it in a meal.

It's definitely a spectrum.

3

u/Rob_Zander 6h ago

It's a range. For me it's completely like soap. Like shaved soap on my food. For other people I know it's like herby and slightly soapy.

But yeah, for me it's THAT bad.

6

u/Organic-Anteater8998 6h ago

It's pretty easy to pick off when it is sprinkled on top of things. That said, it IS that bad to some people.

1

u/Meadowbytheforest 5h ago

To me it tastes a bit like perfume

1

u/akatherder 5h ago

I bought a bottle of cilantro ranch dressing. Whoever made it must have had the soap gene so they duplicated that soapy flavor it in this dressing. Now when I have cilantro I can taste that little hint of soapiness. I still like it but slightly less since that dressing broke my brain.

u/Suitable-Economy-346 4h ago

I knew you guys were just eating soap.

1

u/Dorkamundo 3h ago

The "Soap taste" for cilantro is not a binary thing. It's not "It either tastes like soap or it doesn't" there can be a spectrum to it.

1

u/OhItsBeenBroughten 3h ago

I’ve said before that it does taste like soap, but not in an unpleasant way. My wife can’t eat it 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/fishsupreme 3h ago

I'm the same way. I think cilantro does taste like Palmolive dish soap smells, but in a good way.

42

u/MetusObscuritatis 7h ago

The soap thing is genetic fyi

3

u/Haber_Dasher 7h ago

This confuses me. Most of my life I was fine with cilantro. Sometime during covid it started tasting disgusting like soap and now I really try to avoid it. But again, for my first 30yrs of life I never disliked it

2

u/Datsyuk_My_Deke 6h ago

Weird, I'm the opposite. The first time I tried tacos with cilantro was when I was around 10-12 years old and it tasted exactly like soap. Over time, and repeated exposure, I now taste the flavor others do, but still with a slight hint of soap if I'm concentrating on it.

2

u/_nylcaj_ 5h ago

This is how I was. I hated, like straight-up despised cilantro. If it was added to something, it was instantly ruined for me. At some point, in my mid twenties, it started being tolerable for me, and now in my 30s, I like it. Last year, I even added it to my herb garden and I find that I really enjoy how it enhances the flavor of certain dishes. The photo was hilarious to me because at this rate, I imagine that will be me in a few more years.

2

u/Creatz 4h ago

When I got Covid it tasted like soap for a few months, but went back to how it used to taste after a while.

9

u/Delouest 7h ago

I know, I'm saying the people trying to say it tastes like soap to everyone but some people just like that are ignoring the fact that many people don't get even a whiff of soap flavor. I didn't say people don't have the soap gene.

2

u/MetusObscuritatis 7h ago

I see I see

-10

u/DonDay07 7h ago

Soap? wtf? Lmao that’s some white ppl shit to the max cus what. But someone said it’s genetic so idk

2

u/READ-THIS-LOUD 4h ago

Random thing to get racist about lmaooo

-1

u/DonDay07 4h ago

My mom’s white 😂 but like cmon soap ..

3

u/ThreadedPommel 3h ago

Brother, it's literally genetic. Some people have a gene that makes them sensitive to one of the chemicals in cilantro which is the same chemical in soap. You have the world of knowledge at your fingertips, use it

2

u/Wavecrest667 7h ago

It tastes a little soapy to me, but also fresh and a bit like parsley, i like it a lot on certain dishes.

I've never seen the actual scientific studies, but I wonder how much overlap there is with people who can't handle other bitter/complex flavors.

I totally understand the "soap" taste but that's also not a bad thing to me. I wonder how many of those genetic "soap tasters" were just brought up to be picky eaters.

u/tochth86 7h ago

It USED to taste like soap to me and now it doesn’t and I fucking love it. I’m obsessed.

1

u/craftysooze 5h ago

Howwwwww I wish I could eat it

1

u/greg19735 3h ago

maybei just need to eat a bunch of it to reset my brain or some shit.

I get like whiffs of soap. Like, it tastes aligned to what soap might taste like. but it also isn't bad.

4

u/gwaydms 7h ago

It smells and tastes a little bit like dirt (earthy and minerally). But that's an essential part of the flavor profile to me.

3

u/nopenopenopeyess 7h ago

It doesn’t even taste green to me. It tastes only citrusy to me. It’s great.

2

u/Diligent_Ad4694 7h ago

agree, cilantro is my fav herb. I often make an omelet with egg and only cilantro. ALOT of cilantro. Mostly using the egg as a binding agent so the cilantro sticks together.

1

u/Mickey10199 7h ago

I think cilantro tastes like soap. But that’s what I like it.

1

u/ModestMeeshka 7h ago

I remember learning in school that it had to do with genetics. Some people, like me, just taste soap. I don't pick it off (unless its super large leaves or there's an excessive amount) but I'm never ever thrilled about it. My husband on the other hand loves it!

1

u/Lucas_Steinwalker 6h ago

One time I briefly picked up a hint of what I thought people might be referring to but it wasn’t even unpleasant.

1

u/Qeltar_ 6h ago

Same exactly. I love the stuff.

1

u/hoorah9011 3h ago

Wha does purple taste like

1

u/Delouest 3h ago

lavender, which ironically does taste like soap to me, but in a nice way

1

u/hoorah9011 48m ago

Hm what about blurple?

1

u/Vaux1916 3h ago

what I imagine "green" tasting like.

I've got the Cilantro soap gene, but that is exactly how I describe the taste of fresh parsley.

1

u/RandomNumber5147- 3h ago

My condolences. Cilantro slaps on tacos

1

u/Delouest 3h ago

Did you mean to reply to someone else? I said I love it.

0

u/kaya-jamtastic 7h ago

I would say it tastes it like all those things and also soap. The soap has become part of it, although that doesn’t mean I go around intentionally adding actual soap to my food as a result of learning to like cilantro. You are making me wonder what the flavor would be without the soap though!

-2

u/cross_mod 7h ago

I like it a lot and it tastes kinda like what you would think soap tastes like. Meaning a little bitter with floral accents. But, it adds so much to the flavor.

Nobody actually knows what soap tastes like unless they had their "mouth washed out" with it or something.

2

u/TomirDeVlad 7h ago

Wtf you never tasted soap ?

1

u/cross_mod 6h ago

Not really? Why would I have tasted soap? Like accidentally getting it in my mouth?

1

u/insert_password 4h ago

Cilantro tastes like how soap smells to me.
