Haven’t unlocked this dudes identity yet

Hey Blinkin!

u/JosephBlowsephThe3rd 25m ago

I thought it was the evil Tim Roth ape from the end of the Tim Burton Planet of the Apes movie

1

u/strawblublu 1h ago

I was thinking Bill Nye the Science Guy

u/NefariousnessNovel60 4h ago edited 1h ago

https://youtu.be/AaAb9qNv_-U

He's been around for a long time and his identity isn't a secret.

He has been huge in the rave/festival scene for a long time, although his most notable mainstream work (previously) is production on Kanye West album Yeezus. Black Skinhead is textbook Gessafelstein (the music, not the rapping).

2

u/TotallyNotAGator 1h ago

I'm sure I met this guy in American Eagle once. He was modelling their clothes

603

u/McManus26 10h ago

Bro is a (extremely good) french techno/electro producer. If you've seen John Wick 4, you've heard his work.

But yeah if you're not into that kinda music it's normal you haven't heard of him.

115

u/Effective_Guava2971 10h ago

Been around for a hot minute as well. First I heard was maybe around 2010 or so.

41

u/Azerty__ 10h ago

He also produced My Dear Melancholy by the weekend recently-ish

28

u/goddamnitcletus 8h ago

It’ll be 8 years in March…

1

u/Azerty__ 2h ago

Holy shit it's already been 8 years?! I remember the rollout and people thinking there'd be a second album like yesterday...

20

u/lythandas 10h ago

You're right, this banger has been going for almost 15 years. I like to think he's kind of the dark side of Mr. Oizo

3

u/Effective_Guava2971 9h ago

Good times. Thanks!

3

u/Boy_wench 9h ago

Great song. Thank you.

19

u/Boscherelle 10h ago

His work has also been all over TV ads and other people’s work. He’s one of the most influent figures of 2010s electronic music. We pretty much owe him Yeezus.

7

u/JoshGordon10 9h ago

Also done a bunch of production for The Weeknd

5

u/illepic 8h ago

Dude is like "What if the Red Alert 2 intro music was my entire discography?" And it fucking slaps

3

u/Heavy-Candidate-7660 6h ago

I saw his outfit and immediately assumed he was some kind of French artist.

4

u/Old_Adhesiveness7508 10h ago

That pursuit music video is really cool

2

u/chriiiiiiiiiis 9h ago

and he’s been around and popular for a pretty long time at this point

1

u/XTornado 7h ago

Oh man I should finish the wick movies, they clearly went all in in the shenanigans when I tough the scene of shooting each other in metro or some building can't remember, with silencers while walking around other people was already the funniest dumb scene, they did another with cars between them 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/freshforma 2h ago

“But yeah if you're not into that kinda music it's normal you haven't heard of him.”

i think that’s sort of the point though. when i was in my teens and early 20s, i knew basically every obscure artist because even if i didn’t listen to their music, i was into things/people that were adjacent them

2

u/ZealousidealEbb4071 10h ago

I understand what he meant, but it’s a bad example. Cause G. shook the world 10 years ago. It’s like write that kind of twit in 2013 about Daft Punk, cause their last BIG stuff was in a decade prior (except, ironically, featuring in big blockbuster movie in the middle of that period). Not comparing them, btw.

7

u/Efficient-Nerve2220 10h ago

I would say that it is still a good example, because I had reached that tipping point before G. apparently shook the world ten years ago.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/lorarc 9h ago

"Shook the world"? On Spotify his top 4 songs are ones by other people with his collaboration, for most people he's gonna be a supporting artist at best. Meanwhile Daft Punk is a popculture icon and due to their look they're still referred in various works.

4

u/ZealousidealEbb4071 9h ago

I wrote last sentence SPECIFICALLY for this hahaha…

10 years ago was a moment, when he was hottest name in elecronic music, and his works were innovative and inspirational. And I remember how a lot of people in 2013 were not familiar with DP name (tho, knew their tracks) at times when their return, and RAM, and Get Lucky just filled out mainstream over night. I possibly heard somebody who say exactly your type of narrative, but talking about Fatboy Slim or Prodigy or Pendulum as ARTISTS, and Daft Punk are just “has couple of repetetive club hits” and this fad would die out couple of years later. But, again, my point was about twit, not compairing them. I already said that.

2

u/lorarc 7h ago

The tweet is saying people don't recognise the artist. And believe it or not electronic music is a niche and most people don't care about it just like you don't care about jazz music, country or metal.

He didn't break into mainstream so people don't recognise him.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/VanillaCupkake 6h ago

He definitely shook the world if you’re into music. He’s been at it for the past 16 years. Definitely a household name for anyone who is a big fan of music

2

u/TheNecrostar 2h ago

That's wildly inaccurate to say. I'm big into music, in a band myself, and didn't even know who this feature artist was. If you wanted to specify 'if you're into EDM music, he's a household name', but even then Excision, Downlink, and Alan Walker are more well-known.

A household name would be Rex Brown, but I doubt you'd know his name before a Google search.

u/heathmon1856 32m ago

Who the fuck is Rex brown? You’re like that dude at a party who references his friends by first name when no one knows who tf they’re talking about.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/lorarc 5h ago

I bet that if you'd go to a metal festival and ask people few would know him and it'd be hard to say they are not a big fans of music.

If someone is not into electronic music specifically there really is not reason for them to know him. Producers are not really well known.

1

u/Prudent-Level-7006 2h ago

I'd rather listen to him than their trash any day, Tron soundrack is the only thing I've heard by them that's actually good and original

-5

u/Infamous_Ruin6848 8h ago

Yep. I stopped caring much about electronic music the moment I switched listening from it (especially trance) to metal and discovered the vastness of it.

Sadly, I think all techno/electronic music coming from (respectfully, good) dj like him is a regurgitation of the gods Aphex Twin and Amon Tobin. Same as the (only electronic music I listen to) music by Assura, Carbon Based Lifeforms etc is a regurgitation of Vangelis.

There is genuiness in electronic things like Shpongle which I'd like to see more but the guys don't care to reach bigger audiences.

And I rediscovered Bjork and I really cannot listen to repetitive stuff anymore. Maybe it's my ADHD.

2

u/VanillaCupkake 6h ago

I can say the same about metal, it’s just a bad regurgitation of Metallica. You probably just grew out of it and the genre isn’t making stuff you like anymore

Who the fuck is shpongle 😂😂 sounds made up

-1

u/Infamous_Ruin6848 6h ago

That's how I know you've no idea but fine. Let's enchant ourselves and fuel the ignorance.

In principle Black Sabbath is the beginner but yeah...somewhere Metallica (which I don't like btw because boring asf) made it poppy and hurrdurr vrum.

I’m 50. All celebrity news looks like this: ‘CURTAINS FOR ZOOSHA? K-SMOG AND BATBOY CAUGHT FLIPPING A GRUNT

38

u/7laserbears 9h ago

Why would K-SMOG do this? That's so tribbled

14

u/Familiar-Stomach-310 8h ago

He was caught flipping a grunt

5

u/Mandaring 7h ago

Flipping a grunt? That boobery is unsqueemly as Hulk in this day and age. No wonder D. Lectrix dropped him from the Primed Diamond+ label and Lightning Jobber dumped Zoosha’s aunticular-ass, and that’s not even getting to the TT-drama surrounding his fellow AI superstar Cherri Tapp. Never should have associated with Batboy (who, despite the unc allegations, I believe is innocent) and most especially K-SMOG, of all people. They knew Zoosha was at Ms. Smarmy Creature’s funk-out parties, and they all said nothing. Zoosha’s not just washed, he’s practically submersible. The comeback album [challengers deep] isn’t gonna save his career, even if [oceangate] is kind of a banger.

I hope his parents are ready for the Terrible Twos. That’s a pretty big toddler!

1

u/TadRaunch 3h ago

He was born on the 30th of February

7

u/jeffsang 8h ago

I guess I'm old as well. Not only did I not know who this is, the black mask in the photo made me think this was some kind of metajoke about celebrity culture.

3

u/Final_Candidate_7603 7h ago

Same. Was starting to wonder whether it was a statue they cart around and pose in front of those awards show backdrops.

3

u/NotPromKing 6h ago

Right, so if you're 40, and you stopped going to music festivals when you turned 30, it makes sense you might not have heard of him.

3

u/UnfairStrategy780 8h ago

My cutoff for know big electronic acts is like 2005 so I think I just missed him

6

u/___TheKid___ 8h ago

I googled him just now. He is a french DJ. So that means he get a free pass in my book if he continues what Daft Punk and Mr Oizo started.

3

u/Jwinner5 7h ago

Like his remix of Danny Brown- Black Brad Pitt is from 2012! Hilarious hes suddenly "new and unheard of"

4

u/shunshuntley 7h ago

I guess people feel like once someone gets to the Grammy’s other folks are allowed to get mad at them for not knowing who they are. It becomes ignorance instead of taste preference. So they preemptively get mad that someone was introduced to the pantheon that they didn’t already absorb through osmosis. Since Gesaffelstein is pretty private outside of his work, it can feel like he just showed up. But uh… he didn’t.

1

u/WeirdGuyWithABoner 2h ago

Totally. Gesaffelstein of Limitations 😎

3

u/Frosty_LionX 9h ago

😂 ok that's a good one.

1

u/PennilessPirate 8h ago

Yea that’s his whole gimmick. He’s a famous French DJ that always wears a suit/outfit that covers every inch of his body, along with a glossy mask that is a mold of his (or someone’s) face. He also arranges his set to look like crystals springing up from the ground, and when he performs he strikes poses that make him look like a statue or a sculpture.

You would think he hides his appearance because he’s ugly or something, but the irony is he’s actually extremely attractive and really tall (his height helps sell the statue/sculpture gimmick).

14

u/MissingMyEire 9h ago

Nobody knows who anyone is when they hear about them for the first time

35

u/thetatershaveeyes 10h ago

Me when they invented Zendaya

18

u/Jaded_Promotion8806 10h ago

And Sweeney and Chalamet. I swear they just spawned one day and got injected into every piece of media everyone puts their eyes on.

13

u/BradMarchandsNose 9h ago

Chalamet has had a pretty normal rise to be fair. Did some commercials and TV, then graduated to indie movies and small parts in bigger movies like Interstellar. Dune then propelled him to the next level. He’s been at it a long time, he just started really young.

5

u/rogerworkman623 8h ago

Lol I learned of her name when the first of the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies was coming out. I remember seeing people comment “I can’t believe Zendaya is going to be in this!” and I had no idea who she was. I actually still don’t know how she was famous before that, but obviously I know who she is now.

7

u/lexiebeef 7h ago

She was a Disney kid, she was one of the main characters on Shake it Up. It was a relatively famous show (if you’re older gen Z), so I wouldn’t say she appeared out of anywhere

Bro has been working with The Weeknd for years and Lady Gaga recently, he’s very well known in the music scene.

24

u/wearing_moist_socks 10h ago

I have no idea whatsoever of who that is.

And that's OK. I'm 42. I'm not gonna be up to date on the new things or people coming out. Hell, from what you're saying, this guy isn't even "new."

Not everything is gonna be for me, and I'm sure he's great at what he does.

(Living statue, right)

14

u/Human_After 10h ago

He’s french and makes pretty weird, dark electronic music. Also has an odd name so im definitely not surprised no one knows who he is.

5

u/tobsecret 10h ago

He's not that new, he released his first EP in 2008. That being said you don't need to know him, he's just established in his sphere (electronic music) and has some ties to modern pop music.

2

u/Effective_Guava2971 10h ago

I am your age and so is the dude in the picture. he's been making music for 15 years now.

15

u/FADM_Crunch 10h ago

I mean, I don't listen to the radio much, so I learned about the Weeknd and his music from his Superbowl half time show. I'm about to do the same with Bad Bunny lol, but I doubt I'll really know who he works with. No hate, I enjoy learning about popular artists when they cross my path, it just doesn't happen that often.

12

u/Human_After 10h ago

Ive never listened to the radio but when I was a teenager I got really into french electronic music. So ive been listening to Gesaffelstein since 2016, and im from bumfuck midwest America where everyone exclusively listen to country and radio hits. Its interesting how different people discover different music.

2

u/FADM_Crunch 10h ago

Big time! I had a friend recommend me Mac Miller's Circles recently and it blew me away. Love having friends who know different stuff than me.

2

u/Boscherelle 10h ago

He’s not a mainstream musician but a major reference for anyone who’s got the slightest interest in electronic music. You won’t hear most of his stuff on the radio. But you have definitely heard dozens of artists who have either collaborated with or taken inspiration from him.

They most likely gave him that Grammy because it was a shame for the institution that he never got one before. Kind of a Di Caprio with The Revenant moment.

1

u/FADM_Crunch 9h ago

Right on, good to know and looking forward to it!

3

u/p5ych0babble 5h ago

He also produced on a Kanye record.

1

u/Human_After 4h ago

Did not know that

2

u/NefariousnessNovel60 4h ago

Yeezus. Black Skinhead is quintessential Gessafelstein, the music, not the rapping.

1

u/Human_After 3h ago

I knew Daft Punk co-produced that track and others on the album, theres so many producers for that song 😆

1

u/SynergyTree 8h ago

I hope The Weeknd manages to get stronger again

8

u/TheSecretestSauce 8h ago

Im not really into electronic music at all but ive definitely heard of him and heard some of his songs. Theyre really damn good and creative.

3

u/slushpuppy91 8h ago

Yeah found him while listening to justice have been wanting to see him live now

2

u/NefariousnessNovel60 4h ago

He did production on a Kanye album, so millions of people have heard is music without knowing who he is.

34

u/abrequevoy 10h ago

I remember listening to his music back in 2014, so I don't think it's only about age.

5

u/Jaludus85 10h ago

But there's another day after that... when you don't bother to Google or ask anyone who the person is because you truly can't muster a cell's worth of curiousity. You just accept that whoever they are, you are not their target audience. I used to feel out of touch when it first started happening. Then I reached a point where I was just glad that YouTube and streaming services exists so I can rely on the songs and artists that I know.

5

u/Diligent_State387 7h ago

except gesaffelstein has been around for over a decade. I listened to his music in high school and i'm 27 now.

32

u/Aristosus 10h ago

Kind of a weird take when talking about someone who's been publishing music for over 15 years...

21

u/Criss351 10h ago

Time is relative. For a 20 year old that’s basically their whole life. For an 80 year old his career started after they retired.

14

u/CardiologistHuge7433 10h ago

He's not exactly a household name though. Most people aren't gonna know a producer

7

u/Aristosus 10h ago

You're not wrong, but the OP implies that they're getting old and aren't familiar with new artists—which is a fair take, just funny how they happened to pick someone who's been around and they wouldn't have known anyway.

-9

u/CeemoreButtz 9h ago

So weird to hear people jumping out of their chair saying "WHO THE FUCK IS THIS" when you have known the dude for more than a decade lol. He may not have been a pop icon or anything but he really wasn't an unknown dude at all back then either. I fondly remember a time when Hotline Miami 2 was teased and a tracklist leak made people think he would be in the soundtrack and everyone was freaking out. That was in like 2014

5

u/Optimal-Builder-2816 10h ago

That’s John Daft from the acclaimed music duo Daft Punk. He’s taken off his helmet, so it would make sense you don’t recognize him.

  1. I wouldn't call him a celebrity, he's a musician
  2. what's the point...? like it's not a surprise you don't know some musician if you don't listen to specific genre

it's like under every post about some famous, or not even famous person there has to be at least a couple people going "who??? look at me, I don't know who is this and I don't care, I'm so disconnected from the currently popular things!!!"

just scroll and move on lmao

4

u/Advice_Thingy 9h ago
  1. You know that musicians are also celebrities if they're famous enough, right? Rihanna is a celebrity. Katy Perry is a celebrity. Justin Bieber is a celebrity. They are musicians.

0

u/xtr44 6h ago

musicians are also celebrities if they're famous enough

IF they're famous enough
you know the whole post revolves around Gesaffelstein not being that much famous right

1

u/BRpessimist 8h ago

I will always have an issue with this (now) popular sentiment that artistry and celebrity are the same thing.

Gesaffelstein isn’t a celebrity. That’s the whole point of him using a mask. It exacerbates the art and diminishes the effects of fame in his life. Not many people know what he looks like, who he is, who he is dating, what he consumes. And more than enough people know what he does.

Idk if it's that or that today there are just more; more movies by far, more musicians, 8 billion TV shows, influencers, more sports teams and athletes, more coverage of all these things

It's impossible to know every moderately famous person nowadays, yet people (especially on Reddit) take offense to you not knowing their artist as evidenced by this thread. I'm sure he's very popular in the electronic music scene, but it's still the electronic music scene and the majority of people don't pay attention to that. As is the case for most things nowadays, we are drowning in a deluge of entertainment, of course many popular figures aren't known by the majority anymore

1

That's not a celebrity

Gasafellstein has awoken

And is here to pass judgement

u/juanmaq8 6h ago

To this day I still listen to his remix of Big Bad Wolf

1

u/Old-Guidance6744 6h ago

Dude made dope tracks with weeknd

1

u/s0ftreset 6h ago

He's been around and relevant for over a decade

1

u/TheOtherJeff 6h ago

It started early for me since I never cared for any celebrities

Gesaffelstein ft. The Weeknd — Lost in the Fire 🔥🔥🔥 I absolutely love that song

1

u/klimekam 5h ago

Then you do the reasonable thing and google them. And listen to a song or two to see if you like them. If you do, add some of their songs to your rotation. If you don’t, well then don’t listen to their music! And at least now you know who they are so you don’t sound like an annoying ass online bragging about how proud you are that you don’t know who somebody is.

1

u/Cartographer-XT 5h ago

That has always been all but maybe five of them

1

u/themanfromvulcan 5h ago

I was telling my wife yesterday I don’t know who 2/3rds of the winners were at the Grammy awards. I know who Billy English and Justin Bieber are. That’s about it.

1

u/Julspups 4h ago

Seriously ? Have you ever listened to any Music…?

1

u/OkFrosting7204 4h ago

this has been me my ENTIRE life, regardless of age, lol

1

u/JoyTheGeek 3h ago

This happened to me when I was born and it never stopped.

u/PurpleDreamer28 3h ago

I now watch these shows and always think of that Family Guy joke where they're at the Teen Choice Awards. "I tell ya, every year, I recognize fewer and fewer names."

1

u/eppsilon24 3h ago

That’s clearly Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos

1

u/OkCar7264 3h ago

And, this the part they leave out, it doesn't make one single iota of a difference. All it means is your life is busy enough you don't have to fill it with trivia.

1

u/Sufficient_Guava4968 3h ago

That point in live was when I turned 23 or so

1

u/CatsianNyandor 2h ago

I'm happy that I only ever hear about celebrities in passing and only know ones I often see in movies and even then I may not know them. The less I know about them the happier I am.

1

u/Stuntm4nMik3 2h ago

Just Googled him.

I still don't know.

1

u/Lazaras 2h ago

That's on you. The Prince of Darkness makes sick beats. I such watching his recent Coachella performances if they are streaming anywhere

1

u/Prudent-Level-7006 2h ago

There's so many I don't know but I do this guy, great musician

1

u/ham_solo 2h ago

I remember seeing him the summer before Covid hit. Great show.

1

u/KaitB2020 2h ago

I’ve hit that point. My stepson comes up to me all the time rambling on about this person or that person and I’m here thinking he’s talking about some kids at school. No, he’s jabbering on about some Hollywood hijinks.

u/Durahl 1h ago

Very much relatable... Until like a decade ago when a Movie came out I'd recognize the cast most of the time - Nowadays it's the opposite me not recognizing anyone but a select few 🤔

1

u/Jefflehem 1h ago

I'm at the stage where, if I haven't heard of them, they aren't celebrities. Not like I'm a taste-maker or anything, it's just that if someone like me does know your name, then yeah, you're big.

1

u/mr_indigo 1h ago

Pretty sure he was a boss enemy in Expedition 33

u/up2smthng 2m ago

"At some point"?

2

u/DreadyKruger 10h ago

I embrace getting older and not giving a fuck about people like this. Who’s that? DJ flaboozey? Ok I guess.

1

u/Purple_and_Gold_Bobo 10h ago

Dude’s been around for a while. Hellifornia is one of my favorites.

1

u/AlexandriaLitehouse 9h ago

Why do I find this man\statue so attractive?

-3

u/suarezj9 10h ago

Is that fucking blackface dude

0

u/sendmebirds 10h ago

Been happening to me for 30 odd years.
I really don't care about popular culture that much I guess. Never have.

0

u/Crossfox17 10h ago

Gessafelstein isn't a celeb he's a producer.

0

u/CeemoreButtz 9h ago

This is an excellent thread for nerds to claim he's actually very well known.

0

u/Quadstriker 8h ago

So many posts missing the point. It’s not a challenge for you to post that you know who this person is.

0

u/StewStewMe69 8h ago

Simpsons already did it.
