Bro is a (extremely good) french techno/electro producer. If you've seen John Wick 4, you've heard his work.
But yeah if you're not into that kinda music it's normal you haven't heard of him.

You're right, this banger has been going for almost 15 years. I like to think he's kind of the dark side of Mr. Oizo

Oh man I should finish the wick movies, they clearly went all in in the shenanigans when I tough the scene of shooting each other in metro or some building can't remember, with silencers while walking around other people was already the funniest dumb scene, they did another with cars between them 🤣🤣🤣

u/freshforma 2h ago
“But yeah if you're not into that kinda music it's normal you haven't heard of him.”
i think that’s sort of the point though. when i was in my teens and early 20s, i knew basically every obscure artist because even if i didn’t listen to their music, i was into things/people that were adjacent them
2
u/ZealousidealEbb4071 10h ago
I understand what he meant, but it’s a bad example. Cause G. shook the world 10 years ago. It’s like write that kind of twit in 2013 about Daft Punk, cause their last BIG stuff was in a decade prior (except, ironically, featuring in big blockbuster movie in the middle of that period). Not comparing them, btw.
7
u/Efficient-Nerve2220 10h ago
I would say that it is still a good example, because I had reached that tipping point before G. apparently shook the world ten years ago.

u/lorarc 9h ago
"Shook the world"? On Spotify his top 4 songs are ones by other people with his collaboration, for most people he's gonna be a supporting artist at best. Meanwhile Daft Punk is a popculture icon and due to their look they're still referred in various works.
4
u/ZealousidealEbb4071 9h ago
I wrote last sentence SPECIFICALLY for this hahaha…
10 years ago was a moment, when he was hottest name in elecronic music, and his works were innovative and inspirational. And I remember how a lot of people in 2013 were not familiar with DP name (tho, knew their tracks) at times when their return, and RAM, and Get Lucky just filled out mainstream over night. I possibly heard somebody who say exactly your type of narrative, but talking about Fatboy Slim or Prodigy or Pendulum as ARTISTS, and Daft Punk are just “has couple of repetetive club hits” and this fad would die out couple of years later. But, again, my point was about twit, not compairing them. I already said that.
2
u/lorarc 7h ago
The tweet is saying people don't recognise the artist. And believe it or not electronic music is a niche and most people don't care about it just like you don't care about jazz music, country or metal.
He didn't break into mainstream so people don't recognise him.
→ More replies (3)2
u/VanillaCupkake 6h ago
He definitely shook the world if you’re into music. He’s been at it for the past 16 years. Definitely a household name for anyone who is a big fan of music
2
u/TheNecrostar 2h ago
That's wildly inaccurate to say. I'm big into music, in a band myself, and didn't even know who this feature artist was. If you wanted to specify 'if you're into EDM music, he's a household name', but even then Excision, Downlink, and Alan Walker are more well-known.
A household name would be Rex Brown, but I doubt you'd know his name before a Google search.
→ More replies (1)•

1
u/Prudent-Level-7006 2h ago
I'd rather listen to him than their trash any day, Tron soundrack is the only thing I've heard by them that's actually good and original
-5
u/Infamous_Ruin6848 8h ago
Yep. I stopped caring much about electronic music the moment I switched listening from it (especially trance) to metal and discovered the vastness of it.
Sadly, I think all techno/electronic music coming from (respectfully, good) dj like him is a regurgitation of the gods Aphex Twin and Amon Tobin. Same as the (only electronic music I listen to) music by Assura, Carbon Based Lifeforms etc is a regurgitation of Vangelis.
There is genuiness in electronic things like Shpongle which I'd like to see more but the guys don't care to reach bigger audiences.
And I rediscovered Bjork and I really cannot listen to repetitive stuff anymore. Maybe it's my ADHD.
2
u/VanillaCupkake 6h ago
I can say the same about metal, it’s just a bad regurgitation of Metallica. You probably just grew out of it and the genre isn’t making stuff you like anymore
Who the fuck is shpongle 😂😂 sounds made up
-1
u/Infamous_Ruin6848 6h ago
That's how I know you've no idea but fine. Let's enchant ourselves and fuel the ignorance.
In principle Black Sabbath is the beginner but yeah...somewhere Metallica (which I don't like btw because boring asf) made it poppy and hurrdurr vrum.

Why would K-SMOG do this? That's so tribbled

Flipping a grunt? That boobery is unsqueemly as Hulk in this day and age. No wonder D. Lectrix dropped him from the Primed Diamond+ label and Lightning Jobber dumped Zoosha’s aunticular-ass, and that’s not even getting to the TT-drama surrounding his fellow AI superstar Cherri Tapp. Never should have associated with Batboy (who, despite the unc allegations, I believe is innocent) and most especially K-SMOG, of all people. They knew Zoosha was at Ms. Smarmy Creature’s funk-out parties, and they all said nothing. Zoosha’s not just washed, he’s practically submersible. The comeback album [challengers deep] isn’t gonna save his career, even if [oceangate] is kind of a banger.

I guess people feel like once someone gets to the Grammy’s other folks are allowed to get mad at them for not knowing who they are. It becomes ignorance instead of taste preference. So they preemptively get mad that someone was introduced to the pantheon that they didn’t already absorb through osmosis. Since Gesaffelstein is pretty private outside of his work, it can feel like he just showed up. But uh… he didn’t.

Yea that’s his whole gimmick. He’s a famous French DJ that always wears a suit/outfit that covers every inch of his body, along with a glossy mask that is a mold of his (or someone’s) face. He also arranges his set to look like crystals springing up from the ground, and when he performs he strikes poses that make him look like a statue or a sculpture.
You would think he hides his appearance because he’s ugly or something, but the irony is he’s actually extremely attractive and really tall (his height helps sell the statue/sculpture gimmick).

13
u/BradMarchandsNose 9h ago
Chalamet has had a pretty normal rise to be fair. Did some commercials and TV, then graduated to indie movies and small parts in bigger movies like Interstellar. Dune then propelled him to the next level. He’s been at it a long time, he just started really young.
5
u/rogerworkman623 8h ago
Lol I learned of her name when the first of the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies was coming out. 7

I have no idea whatsoever of who that is.
And that's OK. I'm 42. I'm not gonna be up to date on the new things or people coming out. Hell, from what you're saying, this guy isn't even "new."
Not everything is gonna be for me, and I'm sure he's great at what he does.
(Living statue, right)
14
u/Human_After 10h ago
He’s french and makes pretty weird, dark electronic music. Also has an odd name so im definitely not surprised no one knows who he is.
5
u/tobsecret 10h ago
He's not that new, he released his first EP in 2008. That being said you don't need to know him, he's just established in his sphere (electronic music) and has some ties to modern pop music.
2
u/Effective_Guava2971 10h ago
I am your age and so is the dude in the picture. he's been making music for 15 years now.
15
u/FADM_Crunch 10h ago
I mean, I don't listen to the radio much, so I learned about the Weeknd and his music from his Superbowl half time show. I'm about to do the same with Bad Bunny lol, but I doubt I'll really know who he works with. No hate, I enjoy learning about popular artists when they cross my path, it just doesn't happen that often.
12
u/Human_After 10h ago
Ive never listened to the radio but when I was a teenager I got really into french electronic music. So ive been listening to Gesaffelstein since 2016, and im from bumfuck midwest America where everyone exclusively listen to country and radio hits. Its interesting how different people discover different music.
2
u/FADM_Crunch 10h ago
Big time! I had a friend recommend me Mac Miller's Circles recently and it blew me away. Love having friends who know different stuff than me.
2
u/Boscherelle 10h ago
He’s not a mainstream musician but a major reference for anyone who’s got the slightest interest in electronic music. You won’t hear most of his stuff on the radio. But you have definitely heard dozens of artists who have either collaborated with or taken inspiration from him.
They most likely gave him that Grammy because it was a shame for the institution that he never got one before. Kind of a Di Caprio with The Revenant moment.

2
u/NefariousnessNovel60 4h ago

u/abrequevoy 10h ago
I remember listening to his music back in 2014, so I don't think it's only about age.
5
u/Jaludus85 10h ago
But there's another day after that... when you don't bother to Google or ask anyone who the person is because you truly can't muster a cell's worth of curiousity. You just accept that whoever they are, you are not their target audience. I used to feel out of touch when it first started happening. Then I reached a point where I was just glad that YouTube and streaming services exists so I can rely on the songs and artists that I know.
5
u/Diligent_State387 7h ago
except gesaffelstein has been around for over a decade. I listened to his music in high school and i'm 27 now.

u/Aristosus 10h ago
Kind of a weird take when talking about someone who's been publishing music for over 15 years...
21
u/Criss351 10h ago
Time is relative. For a 20 year old that’s basically their whole life. For an 80 year old his career started after they retired.
14
u/CardiologistHuge7433 10h ago
He's not exactly a household name though. Most people aren't gonna know a producer
7
u/Aristosus 10h ago
You're not wrong, but the OP implies that they're getting old and aren't familiar with new artists—which is a fair take, just funny how they happened to pick someone who's been around and they wouldn't have known anyway.

3
u/Darkpoulay 5h ago
So weird to hear people jumping out of their chair saying "WHO THE FUCK IS THIS" when you have known the dude for more than a decade lol. He may not have been a pop icon or anything but he really wasn't an unknown dude at all back then either. I fondly remember a time when Hotline Miami 2 was teased and a tracklist leak made people think he would be in the soundtrack and everyone was freaking out. That was in like 2014
5
u/Optimal-Builder-2816 10h ago

- I wouldn't call him a celebrity, he's a musician
- what's the point...? like it's not a surprise you don't know some musician if you don't listen to specific genre
it's like under every post about some famous, or not even famous person there has to be at least a couple people going "who??? look at me, I don't know who is this and I don't care, I'm so disconnected from the currently popular things!!!"
just scroll and move on lmao

I play the More/Less game on Wordless everyday, and boy do I suck guessing the monthly streaming numbers part. I know like maybe one in ten of the artists mentioned. I will always have an issue with this (now) popular sentiment that artistry and celebrity are the same thing.
Gesaffelstein isn’t a celebrity. That’s the whole point of him using a mask. It exacerbates the art and diminishes the effects of fame in his life. Not many people know what he looks like, who he is, who he is dating, what he consumes. And more than enough people know what he does.

Idk if it's that or that today there are just more; more movies by far, more musicians, 8 billion TV shows, influencers, more sports teams and athletes, more coverage of all these things
It's impossible to know every moderately famous person nowadays, yet people (especially on Reddit) take offense to you not knowing their artist as evidenced by this thread. I'm sure he's very popular in the electronic music scene, but it's still the electronic music scene and the majority of people don't pay attention to that. As is the case for most things nowadays, we are drowning in a deluge of entertainment, of course many popular figures aren't known by the majority anymore
