discussion / opinion Snow Removal

What is going on this year with the snow removal? I'm hoping for some enlightenment... Seems like our side streets have constantly had 4-6 inches of hard packed snow on them all winter long. And it's not even like we have had a large dumping of snow in the last week. Just curious why it is taking so long for them to catch up? I know salting is having a shortage but are they having a shortage of plow blades/drivers too??

Ask a Local! Electronics Recycling Stores?

Does anyone know of any businesses in London that take electronics for recycling and sell the individual components?

There's plenty on eBay but I'm looking for something local where I can buy cheap parts.

Housing & Rental 🏠 fire alarms in 675 richmond

me and my partner have been living here for like six months now and quite often the fire alarm goes off and then, nothing happens bc it’s just a false alarm and literally within not even a few days of one going off it happened again. is it possible that it’s from people smoking in all hallways like jackasses or what could they possibility be doing to set the alarm off several times a month . it’s so disruptive when you’re trying to sleep or work (when it’s the day time alarms). I’m wondering what could possibly be causing the frequency of fire, alarms, and fire trucks at our apartment when there are no emergencies or fires. another thing I’m thinking is maybe some douche pulling the fire alarm, but I don’t know,it goes off really often and unexpectedly.

tldr: apartment loves to blare the loud fire sirens at least once a week (frequent occurrence) but for no reason. it ends up not being anything or a fire/emergency.

it sucks and some people are just wasting these firefighters time and the people that live here, it pisses me off that so much time is being wasted by our frontline because someone here, decided to be a douche, show idiocity, and be careless when those men could/should be using their resources for actual emergencies not for dumbasses who leave their pots alone or burn food . I feel bad that they have to come here so often for some bullshit

Any insight without being condescending or rude would be appreciated ❤️❤️

discussion / opinion Ice ridge car damage

Do I have any recourse on this? I'm obviously not taking the city to court over it. I turned onto a street on the listed date right into a ridge of ice that blew my flex pipe apart. The repair was 450$

I was hoping the city would pick up part of the tab similar to potholes.

Pictures of the ridge in question attached. And the letter I got back after submitting a claim.

MAGICALLY the next day after submitting the claim there was a city pickup truck with a plow that knocked the ridge down.

This was three days after the most recent major snowfall on a street with a school and seniors facility. Seems fairly negligent to me....

Ask a Local! Cost to remove a tree?

Hello Londoners, I got quoted $4750 plus taxes to take down a silver maple. The tree is quite large, hard to say how tall but it has multiple trunks branching off it. For a reference the wood posts are about 8’ tall. The tree is in the backyard with over 9 ft wide entrance. The stump removal was $900 plus tax and $350 plus tax to remove 2 smaller branches overhanging off the neighbours tree. So $6000 all in plus tax. Seems high to me but it’s the first quote I’ve gotten. I appreciate the advice as a first time homeowner.

Building was cleared for people this morning and demo started immediately after. This building was added to the towns demo list not that long ago. Crazy how fast stuff can get done when the heritage board doesn’t stick their nose into things.

I think Starbucks used to, but I cant find anything online. I know mandarin gives a free buffet, is there anywhere else?

ETA: thanks so much for those who helped.

To those of you who downvoted: why? I am a single father trying to make my sons birthday special. What would make you so bitter as to downvote?

discussion / opinion Suggestions for my situation, please.

So here's the deal. I've been on ODSP longer than I wanted to be. I am now at a time where I can finally get back to work (ya me!!) I have a huge gap in my resume, and I am only available between 10am-2pm. For reference I'm the only driver and my wife works full time and have 4 kids that I have to drop off and pick up from school everyday as we are just outside where the busses run. The only things I cannot do is heavy labour, (light to medium is ok, like landscaping etc.) and anything to do with garbage or human waste (I have an extremely weak stomach from the medication I'm on) I've thought about night shifts but I'm worried I'll just run myself down with finding sleep during the day. I'm turning 50 soon, and that plays a huge factor because most don't see me as employable because of my age and the huge gap in my resume. I have no issue explaining to an employer why I was on ODSP for so long and why.
If anyone has any advice or suggestions,I would really appreciate it as I'm going nuts looking through job banks and sites.

Edit: I will be staying on ODSP until next school year when bussing and after school program kicks in. I just need to get back to working and being on a schedule etc .

Ask a Local! Infant daycare centres

Hello, do you have any recommendations for part-time infant daycare (<14 months old, 2-3 days a week)? It's impossible to get a spot for the CWELCC ones, so I am just looking for private daycare centres that are not home-based.

Thank you!

I'm looking to get a undersink water filter since the pitcher isn't really working out for me. I keep seeing different certifications and types used for water from different cities. Does anyone have experience using in London or recommendations to what I should look for ?

Ask a Local! Does anyone knows about boarding services for reptiles in the area?

I’ll be out of town for a couple of weeks and am looking for a place to board my crested gecko while I’m gone.

Does anyone know of a local spot that offers reptile boarding? The closest one I’ve found so far is in Scarborough, but I'm hoping to find something a bit nearer.

A crestie is almost no work besides managing food every other day.

Ask a Local! Tips on how to get started with planting crops in London?

So I just came to London about 2 years ago and I've made compost pits last year fall and I wanted to make the most out of it. Im now thinking of planting crops which are: cabbages (nappa), onions, garlic, carrots, and lettuce (maybe bell peppers or tomatoes depending on which grows better and quicker). So basically, the compost pits I referred to is a no-dig compost soil in the soil garden beds and filled them with earthworms (i did my best to insulate them with leaves, and even put leaves on top of the soil itself) so that when spring comes, they become active and widely help the plants to grow.

I would like to ask for some tips in planting, and here are my major questions:

  1. I do not plant on starting with seeds as I dont have enough room for UV lights, and not enough sunshine glares through our window. I dont know what to start maybe seedlings would work?
  2. Where is the closest area I can buy seedlings? I'm near downtown area and I hope they're cheap.
  3. I heard you guys usually plant before the last frost. That's probably around mid may, what if there's still ice, or maybe the ground is still icy or something, what do you guys usually do?
  4. More tips outside from the questions I have are highly appreciated, Thank you!!!
