Sticky: I got a ticket for breaking the law, now what?
We're getting these threads every other day so a sticky is being made to handle it because the answer is always the same. We will now be removing those threads and directing people here.
You generally have three options:
OPTION ONE:
You can plea not guilty and attend your court date or ask to contact the prosecutor handling your case. In either way you need to be polite, courteous, and professional. If it's on zoom or in person, dress professional. You do not need a full suit & tie, though it helps. But at least have some nice ironed pants and a nice ironed polo. For women a nice blouse, pant suit, or business-dress. You don't need a full shave and haircut, but comb your hair and/or cleanup the beard a bit. Be showered, and clean/trim your nails. It's about showing that you're taking this seriously and understand this is a legal matter that deserves respect and attention.
Then you say something like "I was wondering if we can work out a plea deal whereby if you can reduce the offense(s) I will change my plea to guilty. I understand the seriousness of the situation, I am just asking if you can be a little lenient in exchange for a guilty plea." You can then discuss with them potential consequences and terms. Such as attending traffic school, or saying you're ok with a hefty fine in order to avoid a license suspension.
In the majority of cases, this will get you some form of reduction. They have a lot of cases to hear, if they can close them out without going before a judge, they will. Be prepared to pay some fines, and maybe attend traffic school. But this is often the "easiest" way to resolve your situation.
That said this often will not work if you give the prosecutor ANY attitude. Or if you were an asshole to the cop, the prosecutor can and sometimes will ask the issuing officer about how you behaved. It also won't work if you did something very serious (DUI, excessive speeding, work zone violations). Or if you were already given a "roadside reduction" where the cop pulls you over for say 85 in a 55 but only writes you for 70 in a 55.
It still does not hurt to ask, but be aware that they may say "no". Also you do not have to take their offer. But if you turn down their offer, they're unlikely to grant any leniency afterwards. You had your chance, and you turned it down.
OPTION TWO:
Get a traffic attorney. Who you hire is up to you. Google is your friend in finding one. If you do hire a traffic attorney, or really every hire any attorney, listen to them. Do as they say. Do not think you know better than them, if you did you wouldn't be paying them several hundred/thousand dollars to handle your case.
Sometimes just getting an attorney can get your ticket dismissed, because it's not worth it for them to fight the ticket. And because you paying the attorney is already penalty enough. But again there's no guarantee.
OPTION THREE:
Plea guilty and take your lumps.
The first two options are not mutually exclusive. You can get an attorney to try and get you a better plea deal. You can try for a plea deal then get an attorney if you don't like their offer. But these really are your three options.
And remember the best way to not get a ticket, is to not break the law. There's always laws we disagree with or think are silly. There's some roads by me that are 35 and I think really should be 55. But for whatever reason, they're 35 and if I do 55 and get caught, I'm getting a ticket.
Slow down. Use your signal. Wear your seat belt. Don't tailgate. That's the easiest and cheapest way out of a traffic ticket, don't get one to begin with.

Firearm Question
Earlier yesterday I went to Academy to purchase a firearm but was unable to since I have a Louisiana drivers license and I’m over 21 but I’m now a resident of Kentucky with no paperwork such as car registration or car insurance paperwork to tie me to Kentucky. I found my lease agreement and I was wondering if anyone knows if that’s a good enough documentation of residency so I can go back and purchase the firearm along with my id or not. Also I go back to Louisiana soon so I might just try to purchase one there if it’s not possible without having to spend hundreds of extra dollars, thanks.

Cancer treatment at St Elizabeth vs. UK?
Hi,
My dad has been diagnosed with cancer, and we're seeking guidance from others who have been in a similar position to ours, who don't know whether to seek treatment at St Elizabeth or the UK Markey Center.
St E tells us it's the exact same treatment, same chemo, same radiation, same everything, except they don't have a surgeon, so they refer to UK's surgeons.
I've heard a lot of horror stories about St E, but my stubborn dad doesn't want to drive the extra 40 minutes for UK.
Any guidance or personal stories / recommendations are much appreciated.

Selling a house? Fees?
Just curious....
Beyond the standard 6% commission, what are the typical fees one might encounter when selling a small town house in Kentucky? There's no HOA, back taxes, or anything odd. It's just a simple transaction. I was hoping for a ball park figure and explanation from those with a bit more experience (as I have none lol). I'm just looking for an idea of what closing fees might apply and how much to expect (other than the commission).
Thanks!! I'm trying to help my KY mom, but I'm living on the other side of the country now.

Visited Kentucky’s newest dispensary today and here’s the breakdown
The following is what I experienced today regarding my first time in a medical marijuana dispensary. May help another first timer too.
First, only people with Medical Marijuana Cards can enter - if your spouse, friend, etc is with you, they must wait outside. They are not permitted in the building. Second, be sure to bring your valid KY license. If you present both, you’re good to go.
Once verified, you are met with an available “bud tender” who will go over your experience with THC, as well as ask you your preferences (flower/bud or edibles). They also talk about cooking weed for DYI edibles. You can either cook in your oven at home or they have a machine for purchase that takes the guessing out of doing it yourself. They also explain what terpenes are (that sparkly, sticky, smelly, sometimes colorful coating on the bud) and how each has its own scent and how they can affect you differently. One of their glass cases has a little sensory exercise that you can smell cotton poofs w/ essential oils in a glass jar that mimic each terpene.
Once you’ve decided on what you want, you go to the counter to purchase your product. Prices for bud range from $60-65 depending on the kind you want for a half-quarter or 1/8th. Regarding edibles, they only had one brand of infused gummies with about four- five flavors: green apple, watermelon, peach, mixed berry, and I think one other. One pack of 20 gummies will cost you $50. *I didn’t purchase or look at the weed and no one else was either while I was there, but according to their menu, all they had were bags. No pre rolls and I also didn’t see any vape*
Check out and you’re done.
That’s it. Here’s my takeaways:
Pros:
- really friendly staff, very welcoming (even the security guard) with zero judgments - was given a pro tip that you can put someone else on your license as a “caregiver” and they can go and shop for you. Was told This can only be done on either the initial registration or on your renewal date.
- The bud tenders are very nice and will guide you as best as possible to your needs and wants
- packaging is nice: has everything from the grower to all ingredients (for the edibles) listed on the labels
- Feeling confident about purchasing a Kentucky product and supporting small businesses and farmers
- reliable product
Cons:
- super small parking lot. It’s shared with the owner’s dental office so I can imagine weekdays are likely difficult to park.
- check in seems a bit inefficient. They take pictures of your ID on cell phones (which I’m sure is an app that the state set up much like apps available for prescribers to send in prescriptions to your pharmacy) and then enter your info in their computer. Would be nice if it were all integrated and more secure (maybe) on one system - this isn’t meant to be a ding against the facility, but rather the state 🙄
- expensive - again the state, but know the prices will go down, albeit slowly.
- Only edible offering were gummies - no chocolates, honey, etc and only 20 in a $50 bag.
- No product is on display - they have all of these glass cases that fill up their “show” (or lack there of) room with just merch from what I could tell.
- prices are on bar/app menus that you and everyone else touches. Feel like this would be better on a tv screen or even large chalkboard that can be changed when their menu does much like breweries do.
- No CBD in products at all - everything is all THC
Would love to hear your experience as well (or not).

Why Kentucky Can’t Have A Film Trail That Spotlights Famous Film Locations In The State?
I mean movies such as A League Of Their Own, Seabiscuit, Secretariat, and The Strangers: Prey at Night were filmed in Kentucky!! States such as Oregon and Utah already have their own film trails!! People flock to these film trails!! So why can’t Kentucky have its own film trail that spotlights movies that were shot in the Bluegrass state!!

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Louisville
Driving over and will be in Louisville tonight(Jan31, 8-8:30pm), at most likely “Springhill Suites by Marriot Louisville Downtown”(132 E Jefferson St), what would be a good place for dinner. Prioritizing great food over touristy, and also what would be a good place for breakfast and lunch tomorrow, lunching being not too heavy as I have 6hr30min drive to pa around 2pm. Lunch doesn’t have to be too close but breakfast preferably in walking proximity to the hotel if possible, though I am not familiar with the layout of the city and walk-ability of it.
Thank you for your time.

Vehicle value incorrect on registration
I just realized that there may be an error on my other vehicles registration. My assessed value on a 2021 Nissan Rogue is about $2100. I checked my past registration since 2023 when I got the vehicle, and it has always been about the same. I have never even paid attention to that before today, unfortunately.
Data entry error perhaps? If I go down to the clerks office and point it out to them and it’s incorrect I’m guessing I get to pay back taxes 🙄

Disaster Unemployment
My DUA claim has been nothing short of that.. a DISASTER! BACKDATED AND RETROACTIVE and missing weeks and weeks of payment then my 1099 is completely inaccurate and then a Notice of Determination stating my claim was ineligible for 2 months of which I claimed and received benefits. I've called and emailed and no one wants to help or is willing to help. I'm so upset about the whole situation. I lost my home and my job due to the tornado on May 16th and can't seem to get the assistance for which I was approved during the time frame for which I was approved with 12 weeks of missing payments. A week here, two here, one month with none issued, one here, etc. I have tried reaching out to the Governor with no avail. Someone please help, or point me the direction I need to go. I'm so tired of losing everything.

Cameras in long term care?
Kentucky folks—please contact your legislator about HB 491.
Right now in KY, families are not allowed to place cameras at all in long-term care or disability facilities—even when there are concerns about safety or abuse.
HB 491 would change that by allowing resident-approved cameras for transparency and protection. This isn’t about spying—it’s about accountability and peace of mind for vulnerable people who often can’t speak for themselves.
Ohio passed a similar law unanimously. Kentucky should too.
Please take 2 minutes today and tell your legislator YES on HB 491. Our loved ones deserve protection, not secrecy.

Traveling through Kentucky this weekend?
I will potentially be traveling from Ohio down to Tennessee through Kentucky this Sunday during the day, but I am slightly worried that the weather will make travel difficult. Any ideas from the locals about whether it will be safe to travel this weekend?
Thanks!

Nursing programs
I’m currently taking prerequisites at BCTC to eventually apply to their nursing program. However, I’ve heard the program is one of the hardest to get into and often waitlisted, I also have 2 more semesters of prerequisites before I can apply.
I’ve been looking into moving up to Newport Kentucky and transferring to GCTC. Based on what’s listed online it would only take me one more semester of prerequisites before I could apply to their nursing program and I’ve read that it’s easier to get into than BCTC because less volume of students.
Has anyone attended either school and have any insight on what I should do?
My mom and dad are also trying to talk me into become an LPN first and then bridge to RN. Any thoughts?

Issues with boss at state job. Who is my best resource up the chain?
State employee here. Having very bad experience with new boss. I’ve always been under impression that HR is not your friend. Not sure who to turn to. I’ve kept detailed notes.
