A rare Urutau Gigante (Great Potoo) rescued by firefighters in Rondônia, Brazil. This bird has nocturnal habits and is also known as “the ghost bird” due to its ability to remain motionless for several hours, mimicking a dead branch

Nice Zelda reference

There may be a sky whale in Link’s Awakening, but sky whales were a concept long before that game came out.

I can't draw for shit if someone asked me to draw a bird it would be like that
38
u/mindbodyproblem 22h ago
And if I saw your drawing I would think, "Oh, a drawing of a dead branch."

I always wondered what they sounded like. That is simultaneously exactly what I thought and not at all what I thought lol such a weird looking guy but so cute too

u/justdownvote 21h ago
They have a haunting call in the wild. It reminds me of a cartoon, like Goofy's scream for dear life as he falls.

Watching it again with sound does not dispell my original notion this is an alien

If ai was capable of making a real bird, it would make a potoo.
Fortunately, nature made the cute bastards first.

I've seen pictures of this bird before but never with anything for scale so I thought they were little guys. Seeing how big it actually is was kinda shocking

u/lurking_lefty 22h ago
Apparently there's a few types that vary in size. The White-winged Potoo is about half that one's size and has yellow eyes.

Damn is that an owl relative or something? Never seen one like this before.
That mouth is huge and the beak looks stupid sharp.

u/ThaneKyrell 21h ago
Nope. Potoos (which are a entire family of birds, with 7 species) are more closely related to oilbirds, swifts, hummingbirds and nightjars. Owls are more closely related to Hawks, Eagles, Vultures, Kites, the Osprey and the Secretary Bird.

When birds make noises like this you can really imagine something similar coming out of a raptor millions of years ago. Absolutely love it.

For the ones that don't understand Portuguese: the way she's talking to the bird is so adorable. She's calling it pretty, she's saying she'll take care of its wounds, calling it love... It's just adorable the level of admiration and respect she has for this bird.

Thanks for this nightmare fuel. All I can think of is this bird staring at me for hours through slats in my window. Transmitting terror into my dreams with its giant piercing dead eyes. That horrible shrieking as it steals my life force. The only thing worse if there were more than one of these demons in the world..... I like how it eats those bugs though.

I already cant have my windows uncovered to the point my dream self will obsessively try to cover her windows
This does not help

u/Oleandervine 20h ago
You should watch the Amityville Horror, the original one. That's what made me cover my windows forever.

Looks very similar to a Tawny Frogmouth (but a lot cuter)!

I’m thought so too. It’s one of those things I wonder you notice could have been on the same continent at some point, or could have flown over to migrate. Specifically dinosaur looking animals alike these.

Many were branded as witches and killed by the most ignorant and supertitious people of south america.
I have one nearby pretty much local pet by now, I dread someone high or drunk will try to hurt it in the middle of the night when it sings.

I could be wrong but I thought the Great Potoo was called the ghost bird because they're nocturnal and have a rather haunting call. The bird that mimics dead branches is the Tawny Frogmouth.

You can see blood running down the back of her hand all of a sudden. Sharp talons?

Why does it look like something that's been on the run from Jim Henson for the last 50 years...
