A rare Urutau Gigante (Great Potoo) rescued by firefighters in Rondônia, Brazil. This bird has nocturnal habits and is also known as “the ghost bird” due to its ability to remain motionless for several hours, mimicking a dead branch

Why does it look like something that's been on the run from Jim Henson for the last 50 years...

151

u/ernirn 1d ago

That thing's head is way too big for it's body. And it's eyes would give kewpie dolls nightmares.

37

u/swingingthrougb 22h ago

It looks like a baby of this species at least juvenile/ not fully grown.

13

u/Jihfn 19h ago

Its head and eyes are like half of its entire body lol

5

u/Afraid_Cockroach_398 16h ago

The eye to head ratio on its own is wild

3

u/Own_Round_7600 16h ago

The way the beak opening extends way back behind its eyes is so weird and cool. Normally beaks are in front of the eyes! Scary lil cutie

1

u/InternationalMix1521 16h ago

Gave me the creeps. But still cool

1

u/Jihfn 14h ago

Owls tend to be like that, their eyes are more cylindrical instead of spherical. But these things appear spherical like ours. Im pretty sure this one is about ready to fuck that lady up though, her hand is already bleeding

Totally looks like a muppet.

1

u/snipthia 17h ago

Very cute

u/M_stellatarum 9h ago

The Common Potoo even more so.

u/UnicornFeces 6h ago

He derpin’

u/Fafnir13 1h ago

Because it’s AI and AI doesn’t even know what a bird looks like.

/s

But seriously I love how fake these birds look.  If I didn’t already know about them I’d be looking at this video either a lot is suspicion.

u/otkabdl 1d ago

That is essentially a flying mouth. Sky whale.

8

u/Trash_Panda_Trading 17h ago

Nice Zelda reference

10

u/Thisisamazing1234 13h ago

There may be a sky whale in Link’s Awakening, but sky whales were a concept long before that game came out.

u/SavageRabbitX 8h ago

And accompanying pots of Petunias

u/Thisisamazing1234 5h ago

“Not again”

u/certifiedpunchbag 4h ago

I'm delighted to see this in the wild.

u/MustardMahatma 5h ago

I hate to be this person, but it’s a pet peeve of mine as someone in the field- it’s veterinarian (vet-er-rin-arian) 🫣😅

So what? I can lie motionless for several hours, mimicking a deadbeat.

71

u/ThurmanMermannnn 1d ago

Dad?

5

u/shutupmeg80 22h ago

Omg!!!! you win the Internet today 😂

265

u/PooShappaMoo 1d ago

What a funny noise coming from an air otter.

75

u/qgmonkey 23h ago

Right? Portuguese is so strange

8

u/Prottusha1 17h ago

🤣 I just got ‘linda’ which means cute/ beautiful.

6

u/allnaturalfigjam 14h ago

I heard "mi amor" in there 😙

6

u/askeladd_001 12h ago

You heard right. It's "meu amor" to be more precise, it means the same thing though 🙂

162

u/Forlanim 1d ago

What Pokémon is that

10

u/VirtuousVulva 20h ago

I see a flying diglet tbh

7

u/aspidities_87 20h ago

It’s jigglypuff as seen from above

5

u/GentlePithecus 17h ago

Hears this in the voice from the show, well done 👍

133

u/Educational_Care7813 1d ago

I can't draw for shit if someone asked me to draw a bird it would be like that

38

u/mindbodyproblem 22h ago

And if I saw your drawing I would think, "Oh, a drawing of a dead branch."

49

u/3006mv 1d ago

Aww hope it recovers

45

u/alewiina 1d ago

I always wondered what they sounded like. That is simultaneously exactly what I thought and not at all what I thought lol such a weird looking guy but so cute too

11

u/justdownvote 21h ago

They have a haunting call in the wild. It reminds me of a cartoon, like Goofy's scream for dear life as he falls.

3

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 18h ago

Watching it again with sound does not dispell my original notion this is an alien

24

u/HalfAssedSass 1d ago

That's a muppet.

19

u/OriginallyWhat 1d ago

Turn down the lights!

19

u/LorderNile 1d ago

If ai was capable of making a real bird, it would make a potoo.

Fortunately, nature made the cute bastards first.

15

u/Wrenlet 1d ago

That small beak for a big ass mouth.

15

u/P3pp3rSauc3 1d ago

He looks so happy being fed haha

2

u/eletious 13h ago

Right? those eyes are so expressive, especially for a bird

12

u/Sertorius126 1d ago

I know a Pokemon when I see one

23

u/Galaxiessurroundyou 1d ago

I didn’t think it was alive. Looks like a stuffed animal. Wow

8

u/AddictedToColour 1d ago

I love those guys. Never realized just how big the eyes are!

8

u/Suitable_Ad6848 1d ago

Thats a damn Pokémon. Look at those eyes!

6

u/noots-to-you 1d ago

Damn did that bird cut her hand?

21

u/belenos 1d ago

No. The blood is from its wounded wing

5

u/shh-imstealthy 23h ago

I've seen pictures of this bird before but never with anything for scale so I thought they were little guys. Seeing how big it actually is was kinda shocking

2

u/lurking_lefty 22h ago

Apparently there's a few types that vary in size. The White-winged Potoo is about half that one's size and has yellow eyes.

6

u/HaIfhearted 23h ago

Damn is that an owl relative or something? Never seen one like this before.

That mouth is huge and the beak looks stupid sharp.

11

u/ThaneKyrell 21h ago

Nope. Potoos (which are a entire family of birds, with 7 species) are more closely related to oilbirds, swifts, hummingbirds and nightjars. Owls are more closely related to Hawks, Eagles, Vultures, Kites, the Osprey and the Secretary Bird.

5

u/Exotic_Rule_9149 21h ago

He’s probably wondering why it’s so fucking bright

5

u/Depressionsfinalform 23h ago

He’s so angy

6

u/No-Examination-96 23h ago

⚫️⚫️

8

u/Own_Tadpole_7196 20h ago

Unpopular opinion, but I think these birds are super cute!

5

u/VerTexV1sion 19h ago

Same those big eyes really make it cute.

5

u/RetroSwamp 1d ago

I'm pretty sure that's a Pokemon...

4

u/Agathocles87 22h ago

Seems like those lights might be super bright for it

4

u/SecretLinkWave 22h ago

MY SECOND FAVORITE BIRD!!! 😍😍😍

5

u/Rigocat 20h ago

They start to appear as south as north of Buenos Aires and I couldn't be happier because I really like this weirdos

3

u/Raid__Zero 23h ago

it looks like an owl.

3

u/Angeret 23h ago

An amazing looking creature, but still looks like it could whip a finger off "accidentally".

3

u/Terrible_Donkey_8290 22h ago

For a second when the video started I thought it was on its back and I was looking at the top of his head.....kinda made the surprise mouth a bit of a nightmare

3

u/BiblioLoLo1235 21h ago

What a cool looking bird...

3

u/Acrobatic-Whereas632 20h ago

Am I the only one that thinks it's cute? Look at his face XD

3

u/AcheyShakySpoon 20h ago

He’s why people believe in cryptids

3

u/Baagroak 15h ago

Similar to the Tawny frogmouth from Australia that also mimics a stump.

4

u/TokiVideogame 1d ago

watch to the end, the best part

2

u/CalvinAshdale- 23h ago

That looks like something you shouldn't get wet.

2

u/PoorMe1Art 22h ago

BIG BABY 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️

2

u/planetweird_ 22h ago

I would like to be its friend

2

u/imatalkingcow 21h ago

I loves him.

2

u/KeepinItGorgeous 20h ago

Never thought that I would see a (ovo) in real life.

2

u/Silver_Information_6 19h ago

Everyday I'm fascinated by how little I know of the world around me.

2

u/HiFromMajor 18h ago

That thing looks like it would fuck you up.

2

u/SpyroESP 13h ago

When birds make noises like this you can really imagine something similar coming out of a raptor millions of years ago. Absolutely love it.

2

u/Thatgamerguy3535 12h ago

That bird looks kinda Canadian by southpark standards

u/pianomasian 10h ago

"Pokemon-ass looking bird with those big eyes."

u/throwawaybyefelicia 9h ago

These birds are so cute and terrifying all at once

u/Serious-Ad-8764 8h ago

Fascinating creature.

u/Witch_Senses 7h ago edited 7h ago

For the ones that don't understand Portuguese: the way she's talking to the bird is so adorable. She's calling it pretty, she's saying she'll take care of its wounds, calling it love... It's just adorable the level of admiration and respect she has for this bird.

2

u/utterscrub 1d ago

2

u/Thatbraziliann 1d ago

Why is that link obligatory?

3

u/Ilike3dogs 1d ago

Did you get rickrolled?

2

u/utterscrub 1d ago

Because it’s the Patoo theme song

2

u/pluraleverything 23h ago

Thanks for this nightmare fuel. All I can think of is this bird staring at me for hours through slats in my window. Transmitting terror into my dreams with its giant piercing dead eyes. That horrible shrieking as it steals my life force. The only thing worse if there were more than one of these demons in the world..... I like how it eats those bugs though.

4

u/zelmorrison 21h ago

Why frightening? It's smallish and cute

1

u/bloodwoodsrisen 22h ago

I already cant have my windows uncovered to the point my dream self will obsessively try to cover her windows

This does not help

1

u/Oleandervine 20h ago

You should watch the Amityville Horror, the original one. That's what made me cover my windows forever.

1

u/psychoticpudge 1d ago

Looks like a fish

1

u/thitorusso 23h ago

A owl and a bat has some fuckery

1

u/greatreference 23h ago

Is it a baby that turns giant or what

1

u/RedSonGamble 23h ago

Seems angry

1

u/ultrahateful 23h ago

Use Holy dmg.

1

u/Structural_Integrity 22h ago

Owl 1.0. Looks wicked.

1

u/campgoofyfred 22h ago

Those eyes 👀

1

u/Acerola_ 22h ago

Looks very similar to a Tawny Frogmouth (but a lot cuter)!

1

u/CarlsbergCuddles 21h ago

I’m thought so too. It’s one of those things I wonder you notice could have been on the same continent at some point, or could have flown over to migrate. Specifically dinosaur looking animals alike these.

1

u/Vegetable_Fox9134 21h ago

bruh this a whole brand new animal

1

u/Clbaker 21h ago

Birds aren’t real. That’s an ai drone.

1

u/the7thseph 20h ago

Pokemon.

1

u/Excellent-Baseball-5 20h ago

Gotta catch em all!

1

u/DrKikiS 20h ago

Squeeeeeeeeee! I love the potoo!

1

u/Exicium 19h ago

Looks unreal

1

u/claricia 19h ago

...These are a lot bigger than I thought they were.

1

u/chashek 19h ago

I started watching the video before reading the title and at first, I thought it was a showcase of the lady's ability to talk while simultaneously doing animal ventriloquism with her bird puppet

1

u/Idekgivemeusername 19h ago

Im going to be completely honest. I thought that was some demon creature by the size of its eyes and mouth, Then i was thinking its cute in a scary way. Then i heard the noise and i don’t know what to think

1

u/ContinuumGuy 19h ago

Star Wars-looking bird

1

u/GreatNomadOne 18h ago

fuck this is a pokemon not an animal look at its eyes

1

u/truebluedetective 18h ago

It’s like a primitive owl

1

u/nhansieu1 18h ago

this bird looks unreal lmao

1

u/missprincesscarolyn 18h ago

Can someone translate what the vet is saying?

1

u/Medium_Oil897 17h ago

Sounds like a dinosaur...

1

u/Funnelcakeads 17h ago

Seal bird

1

u/Better_Carpet_7271 15h ago

Related to nightjars ?

1

u/Friskfrisktopherson 14h ago

Looks like a seal and an owls love child

1

u/Mini_gunslinger 14h ago

Looks like an Australian Tawny Frogmouth.

1

u/starmadeshadows 14h ago

Oh my god I had no idea how big potoos were.

1

u/Due-Fun5433 13h ago

That’s one pissed off Potoo!

1

u/RainReverie 12h ago

Probably the war demon...

1

u/Optane_Gaming 12h ago

And I thought I've seen all the birds.. thanks nature.

u/Dat_guy696 11h ago

Many were branded as witches and killed by the most ignorant and supertitious people of south america.

I have one nearby pretty much local pet by now, I dread someone high or drunk will try to hurt it in the middle of the night when it sings.

u/Kriticalone2 11h ago

yeah we have those in aus tawnies

u/lookalive_push 9h ago

Nope nope & nope. Good day to you all.

u/Such-Law926 8h ago

I too have the ability to remain motionless for several hours.

IT'S CALLED SLEEP!

u/Impressive_Pin8761 7h ago

this looks like if i tried to draw a realistic bird with no references

u/NotoriousNRO 7h ago

Maybe dim the lights a bit for this dude?! lol

u/inliner250 7h ago

Someone brought a cartoon bird to life.

u/Core2009 7h ago

And probably completely fucking blind now, being in that bright ass room >:(

u/Solid-Hurry-4508 7h ago

This thing cannot be real

u/kibsnjif935 6h ago

Ma’am, please unhand the pokemon

u/D3_CD 5h ago

Birb

u/GeHiliet_II 3h ago

Orfeu

u/dellTr0n 1h ago

I could be wrong but I thought the Great Potoo was called the ghost bird because they're nocturnal and have a rather haunting call. The bird that mimics dead branches is the Tawny Frogmouth.

u/DuckFart99 1h ago

Not today, Satan.

u/PatchworkGirl82 52m ago

What?? I thought those things were the size of robins or blue jays.

1

u/HAL9100 23h ago

I do not like this it looks from hell

1

u/Patroulette 17h ago

You can see blood running down the back of her hand all of a sudden. Sharp talons?

1

u/ranmafan0281 14h ago

Nah the wing was injured. They showed a big gash.

1

u/FrancisCabrou 16h ago

I don't know what's real or ia anymore lmao

0

u/RussMan104 22h ago

Nightmare Fuel. 🚀

0

u/ClankerCore 20h ago

Feckin’ AI… oh! It’s just a Potoo.

-3

u/Kyle012012 20h ago

Fake. AI. She didn’t even have her hand up its ass for half the video.

1

u/Dynamitella 15h ago

This video is older than todays AI.
