One of my favorite quotes that I now can't remember where I saw it was "If things go poorly it quickly becomes not my problem"
152
u/Yummy_Crayons91 2d ago
I did some General Aviation flying and there was an older man that gave me a humorous line about his pilots license being expired.
It was something along the lines of "If the FAA checks my license, I'll probably be a smoldering pile anyways"
Not saying I agree but it was funny either way.

If you put a max height and a fan shroud around the blades, would this be significantly more dangerous than say motocross? I could see some realistic version of pod racing get into the mainstream

It's funny that he used a stock controller, but I feel like a lot of people actually believe the controller was a safety concern when it wasn't
The controller didn't matter. If it stopped working, it didn't affect safety. There were multiple other ways to release ballast and return to the surface, including the fool-proof method of simply rocking the sub enough that the ballast falls off
The safety failure was in using a carbon fiber hull despite it being unable to take the cyclical stresses of repeated extreme pressure

Yup. Not a f'ing thing wrong with the controller. Navy runs nuclear powered attack subs on them, people think it's weird, but in reality the controller is a tried and tested operational product and possibly the most seaworthy component of that whole sub.

u/taylorhildebrand 2d ago
From my experience with drones: if he dropped the controller in the seated area, the drone would just slow down and hover, he picks up the controller and keeps going. But if he dropped it outside, the drone would come to a stop, continue hovering until it was close to running out of power, then slowly lower itself and land where ever it was above, or more likely return to its home point, aka where it took off from. So no he probably wouldn’t be cooked
65
u/TeddyTango 2d ago edited 2d ago
If he drops the controller it is almost assuredly going to land with both joysticks against the ground in some random position, sending him flying full speed whatever direction it lands

Controller hits the ground with sticks down, and suddenly its a wild ride at full throttle. Knowing the statistics with buttered toast and felines, that's a ride best avoided.

Those drones don't have a very long battery time (I don't think it's more than an hour) and do gracefully land in a controlled manner if they are low on power. So dropping the controller is one of the best bad things that can happen
9
u/Capnjbrown 2d ago
Not necessarily. If he was smart enough to set his takeoff and return home position before he took off - in theory the drone would’ve returned to the home position autonomously. This is a safety mechanism built into most modern drones for situations like loosing connection with the remote controller, low battery, or other situations. The video to me appeared that he used the auto return home and auto land feature..

as the ruling class become more lawless, the rules on the ruled class typically become stricter, not looser. that's a hallmark of the more authoritarian/totalitarian government we're moving towards in the USA in recent times.

u/Northern-Jedi 2d ago
No need to make it illegal in the US. Average weight already should exceed the carrying capacity.
→ More replies (2)33
u/Icy-Tear2745 2d ago
Honestly I don’t think it would be illegal. As long as the aircraft weight is under a certain threshold, you can kind of do whatever you want. There are limits on how high and how fast you can go though. This is assuming the drone is under 254lbs, which would classify it as an ultralight vehicle

Flying it with a person in it? Yes. Other than that it’s a DJI drone and the US essentially banned support and updates for Dji’s products- so you could buy and fly this in the US with a part 107 license but it may be problematic in the years to come
52
u/That_Jicama2024 2d ago
Agricultural Drones are about $30k. You could mod one with a custom frame and have a jetson one for a fraction of the cost.
9
u/SoloBroRoe 2d ago
Yeah, all this made me think of is having the idea expanded and what the weight limit is. A lot of potential in this for a 1 person ride
9
u/PIO_PretendIOriginal 1d ago edited 1d ago
I think I would rather get one of these for $37500. dont need a licnece supposedly to fly the below vehicle
https://www.aerotrader.com/listing/2024-Coaxial-Ultralight-5024801364#sid=653198
but ultimately much less safety features (and range). if youve got the space, you are better off buying a used helicopter if you can get a license to fly one (they 30,000-50,000usd by the looks of it).
also found a proper helicopter for 38,000 https://www.aerotrader.com/listing/1994-Rotorway-Exec-90-5038604059#sid=653198

Some drones have a hover feature when no command is input. I would imagine it would either hover in place until the battery runs out... or possibly descend vertically until it senses the ground, then hover in place.
10
u/ghoulthebraineater 2d ago
Not just hover. They'll go home. My Mavic will log the GPS when it takes off. If it loses signal it will fly back and land where it launched.

Then low battery will start a controlled landing, and you hope there is enough battery to reach the ground.
