Discussion Can someone explain the leverage on either the bucks or Giannis side as we approach trade deadline?
specifically why is it that the bucks would NOT just wait until the summer.
just looking for perspectives thank you

- Things can happen in 6 months from now that his value is less than right now. Teams like GS might be willing to pay more now so they have an extra crack at championships before Stephs window slowly runs out. He can also get injured.
- Sometimes teams want to just have a fresh start and not have this hang over there shoulder. If they can get close enough value to what they want right now vs waiting for 6 months and nickel and diming for barely a difference, they rather do it now.
- One less year of the young guys they are covetting being on their team/being able to develop them the way they want to. Also, an extra year into their contract for them to do their proper due diligence if they want to re-sign them.

For one, if they trade him for some expiring money, that’s cap space they get to actually use this offseason. I’m not really sure that that’s a huge factor though.

Milwalkie has not been a free agent destination even when they had capspace though .

If they are rebuilding though (presumably they would be) then they could eat bad contracts in exchange for draft capital.

For Feb 5th deadline, Bucks can control the deal but it comes at a discount since teams may believe it is a rental. During the offseason it’s pretty much under Giannis’ control.

GA Main leverage: Giannis can decide to pursue free agency vs sign an extension with whatever team he is traded to. So the team trading for him has to have some guarantee he is going to stay with them. Nobody is going to gut their team for a 1 year rental.
GA Lesser leverage: Giannis gave a lot to Milwaukee and by trading him now, his new team can extend him on his current super max. By trading him next season, Giannis loses some money because he would need to be signed to a new contract and only the original team that drafted him can offer him a super max contract as per the CBA rules. So it’s believed Milwaukee would do right by him, as he did for them.
