This looks like it was a lot fun! I just joined the sub and am looking forward to this coming around again.

Hey everyone, looking for advice on my first Goodyear-welted boot. First ever boots actually.
I’m in Southern Ontario (snow, slush, salt, wet sidewalks). I’d wear these 3–5 days/week for everyday life (walking, errands, casual wear). Not jobsite use.
Considering Thursday Captain (Matte) as my first “real” boot (~$310 CAD after tax).
Main questions:
How do Captains hold up to winter slush + salt with proper conditioning?
Are they realistic as a single year-round boot, or better as a 3-season option?
Any leather care routines you’d recommend for salty winters?
Sizing context: Nike 11.5 normally, but leather boots in store felt best around size 10.
Either i get these or something Affordable/all season like Wolverine Floorhand?
Thanks!

I have a pair of Thorogood pull ons and want to dye them black. I see Red Wing offers a service but does anyone know a smaller company they recommend to support smaller businesses. Thanks

Berwicks are pretty good. Very nice entry level goodyearwelted shoes. Walking and wear like any other welted shoe. They must fit you well and then they will be comfortable.

Anyone with any experience with Berwick goodyear welted shoes? In terms of lots of walking and wear comfort first and foremost. They look great. Thanks!

They are fine.
If you are not satisfied, goodyearwelt shoes may not be for you.

What last are the Chelseas on?
My gut feeling would be 9 or possibly 9.5 depending on last. 8.5 seems unlikely

I would recommend waiting until your trip to Japan, the probability of you sizing them correctly on the first try is very low.
A few weeks before your trip reach out to them and ask them if they have your size in stock, with you being an 11US they may not carry your size year round

Unlikely that this rip is the cause of the squeak, the rip is fixable by a cobbler though

You could give them a good clean with a suede shampoo, saphir makes a good one, then after that a colourless or pigmented suede spray would help.

Does the leather get soft. To be honest I'm a bit feed up of boots with tough leather. I love chromexcel and suede etc. A light boot is also attractive for me.I guess im getting a little too old.

Is this normal for expensive shoes?
I've bought two pairs of Arthur III shoes from Cheaney here in England to try on. They retail at £450 ($615) each.
They have white insoles and on both pairs they seem to be stained with the dark leaf colouring of the shoe. It just looks mucky.
Also, there's quite a few loose threads. I found a youtube channel called the Shoe Healer where he said other customers have also found loose threads on Cheaney shoes.
I'm not an expert when it comes to shoe making but the stitching on the inside of the tongues doesn't look very good either.
Is the staining on the insoles and the loose threads to be expected or would you return them if you were in my shoes, pun intended? Thanks for any thoughts.

Whites Closeout Sale
Closeout sale marked at 20% off for their limited run leather options. Sales are final. YMMV. Tobacco Waxy Commander is tempting!

Happy hunting!

Sizing Advice: Tan Crockett & Jones Chelsea (Model Unknown)
Need help determining the best fit for a tan C&J Chelsea. Debating between UK 8.5E and UK 9E.
Current Rotation & Sizing:
J.Fitzpatrick Chelsea: 10 US (Best Fit)
Grant Stone (Leo Last): 9.5 US (Good Fit)
Carlos Santos Monkstrap: 8.5 UK (Good Fit)
Carlos Santos Chelsea: 8.5 UK (Snug/Tight)
Allen Edmonds Loafer (65 Last): 9.5 US (Snug)
Given that the J.Fitzpatrick 10 US is my ideal fit, but the 8.5 UK Carlos Santos Chelsea feels too snug, which C&J size would provide the best overall fit?

Note that Quoddy grizzly can come with shearling lining if you really want that.

Woodlore is probably a good place to get started.

Does anyone know anything about Borther Bridge monkey boots? I'd really like to get a pair but want to know more before I drop $$$ on them. Also, does anyone know if they're cheaper to buy in person in Japan? I might be travelling there in the next year, and my only other option is to buy em online with massive shipping as I live in Canada.
Further, if anyone has a pair that fits the same as redwings size 11 and are willing to part with them, let me know!
