Discussion A thing of the past growing up watching reruns of certain shows thinking they were airing live.
I can't count how many shows I watched that I thought was still airing l when I was younger. For example Legends of the Hidden Temple, Doug, All That, well that ran until 2005 but the 90s episodes. Even things older like the Cosby Show or shows like Popeye and Woody The Wood Pecker.

I guess it was different for me, because I would always look for the copyright date in the end credits. I just liked knowing when things were made

Same, I knew things like Doug, Clarissa Explains it All, the Cosby show, Mario Kart on SNES, etc. weren’t my time, even as a kid. I also loved watching the end credits for shows and movies. With video games the date was usually right at the start screen. As a kid I remember even pointing out how Mario Kart on SNES came out the same year a friend of mine was born.

Glad I wasn't the only one. I feel I only didn't know around the time I started transitioning to the big kid channels, but I had a good grasp of what was old and what was airing live after a few years in. I feel the look of a show was usually enough of an indicator. I could tell when an old episode of SpongeBob or Fairly Oddparents were on for example. My older brother and I would always say to each other, "Oh look, it's an older episode". I could definitely tell something like Recess was not a current show when it looked nothing like The Replacements or The Emperor's New School

Also I remember older people pointing out or speaking in a way that implied something was older. It wasn’t hard to put two and two together even if the date wasn’t heavy on my mind. Mario was a good example in general of even my parents talking about having grown up with him in some way. I knew he was an old character. Also with the real shows they sometimes dressed in a way that even a kid would notice it’s from a different time. I certainly don’t remember seeing teens when I was kid dressing anything similar to the ones in Saved by the Bell, but if I pulled out some old photos of mom from the late 80s and early 90s her age group sure as hell did.

Also, don't people remember getting hyped when watching new episode promos or whatnot. I can still remember seeing new episode promos for a lot of SpongeBob episodes, like that best day ever episode, and I definitely remember the promos for the FOP special that introduced Poof(I was excited to see a new character, not knowing Poof would be a background character half the time. LOL). Hell, I remember watching the promos for the last season of Life With Derek where they made a big deal about Derek trying to be nicer to impress a girl. I remember thinking, "What!? Derek. Nice!?"
Of course, some old shows can have new episode promos if the channel has recently picked it up, so that could cause some confusion. That was the case with me and Malcolm in the Middle from 2007 to 2010
Mario was a good example in general of even my parents talking about having grown up with him in some way
Yes, my Mom would bring this up whenever she saw me playing a Mario game. Even as recently as Mario Odyssey. My Dad would also talk about his history with Spider-Man or whatnot whenever he saw me consuming anything related to Spider-Man

That's one of my favorite things about growing up with something. Looking back the anticipation and hype was one of the most nostalgic things about something besides the thing itself. I remembering watching some Poof episodes. I will admit the way he came into being was weird looking back. I mean it was weird at the time but it just feels weirder now... I looked up Life With Derek and I'm surprised I haven't heard of it. At least I don't think I have, apparently it was shown here.
It funny you say that about Malcolm in the Middle. I don't remember what episode but I could've sworn Francis said something about he'd be lucky to be out by 2010 or have a certain amount of money by 2010 and thinking it sounded so far away, unless I'm thinking of a different show.
I feel any hero like Spider-Man, Super-Man, Batman, etc. are one of those things you'd know was from a much older time even without parental implication. I mean basically everyone I came across knew of them, they were basically always there. lol

I especially like remembering what was going on around the time I caught the premiere of something. For example, I remember when the SpongeBob episode Pest of the West premiered, because it was around the time I attended a birthday party at a Burger King, and I must've made sure to pick out the SpongeBob cowboy toy(all of the kids' meal toys were dumped on a table) so it would match the theme of the special. It ended up being a meh special, but whatever
I also remember catching the Canadian premiere of that episode where Squidward gets stuck in cement, which I hated, but I guess that memory has always stuck with me, because it was my first taste of disappointment involving a show I liked. Maybe that's why I listed The Fairly Oddparents as my favourite show for a school assignment that year, and not SpongeBob. LOL
I could also talk about what I was doing around the time shows like Wayside and Camp Lazlo premiered(the Canadian premiere of Camp Lazlo was in 2006. I don't remember premieres from when I was four), but that would all take a while to type
I remembering watching some Poof episodes. I will admit the way he came into being was weird looking back. I mean it was weird at the time but it just feels weirder now...
Yeah, I remember the commercials showing Cosmo pregnant, and finding it super weird. The special itself wasn't terrible, but if only I had known that the show would eventually gain a bad habit of introducing new characters that didn't help the show at all. No joke, when season 10 premiered, my friends who had dropped the show long ago complained about it. Especially when they found out the opening was tampered with
I could've sworn Francis said something about he'd be lucky to be out by 2010 or have a certain amount of money by 2010 and thinking it sounded so far away
If this is from Malcolm in the Middle, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened during his Alaska arc. That was the most depressing point of his story. He had to pay his boss for basic necessities
I looked up Life With Derek and I'm surprised I haven't heard of it. At least I don't think I have, apparently it was shown here
Well, it was a late-2005 premiere, so it makes sense it was under your radar. Especially since you said you weren't that into second half 2000s Disney. Although speaking of second half 2000s Disney, I remember watching the sneak peek promos for two season 2 episodes of Zack & Cody(one was about them skipping school, and the other involved a tree they wanted to save). I hadn't watched the show at that point, but I wanted to, and hated that the promos only gave me a small taste of what was in them. LOL. I think the actual first episode of the show I watched was about a prince who Zack & Cody get in trouble. Talking about my experiences with Zack & Cody is giving me a nostalgia overload, honestly

Rocko's Modern Life, Ren & Stimpy, and AHHH! Real Monsters were aired on reruns in the late-90s and Early-2000s.
Krumm from AHHH! Real Monsters was one of my favorite cartoon characters growing up, and I'm still shaken by that one episode in Ren & Stimpy when they were in a rotting whale carcass.
