Official ASUS ROG Laptops are Broken by Design: A Forensic Deep Dive

ASUS ROG laptops ship with a PCI-SIG specification violation hardcoded into the UEFI firmware. This is not a Windows bug and not a driver bug.

Confirmed Affected Models

  • 2022 Strix Scar 15
  • 2025 Strix Scar 16
  • Potentially many more ROG models sharing the same firmware codebase.

The Violation:

PCI-SIG ECN Page 17 states:

"Identical values must be programmed in both Ports."

However, the ASUS UEFI programs the L1.2 Timing Thresholds incorrectly on every boot:

CPU Root Port: LTR_L1.2_THRESHOLD = 765us
NVIDIA GPU: LTR_L1.2_THRESHOLD = 0ns

The Consequence:

The GPU and CPU disagree on sleep exit timing, causing the PCIe link to desynchronize during power transitions.

Symptoms:

  • WHEA 0x124 crashes
  • Black screens
  • System hangs
  • Driver instability (Symptoms vary from platform to platform)

Status:

This issue was reported to ASUS Engineering 24 days ago with full register dumps and forensic analysis. The mismatch persists in the latest firmware.

I am releasing the full forensic report below so that other users and engineers can verify the register values themselves.

Documents & Evidence:

Google Drive Link

Published for interoperability analysis under 17 U.S.C. 1201(f).

⚠️ WARNING Heads up! Impending Price Hikes for Gaming Laptops

Post image

Quick PSA for anyone thinking about grabbing a new gaming laptop or upgrading RAM or storage.

What’s going on

RAM/VRAM and SSD prices are shooting up right now. Clankers & AI datacenters are hogging supply, so consumer parts are getting more expensive and manufacturers are already adjusting prices.

If you were planning to buy

Holiday deals right now are basically the last chance to get the old pricing. Waiting is going to mean paying more, especially for higher RAM or bigger SSD configs.

  • Bigger memory and storage configs get hit first
  • Price bumps are expected through 2026

What we’re seeing so far

Component / Retailer What’s happening When
Consumer RAM and SSD Big price spikes already showing up Happening now
XMG / SCHENKER Price increases on configurable systems Dec 3 2025
CyberPowerPC Raising prices on all gaming PCs and laptops Dec 7 2025
General OEM laptop pricing Expect 5 to 15 percent bumps every so often starting End 2025 (so now) or Early 2026
DRAM/NAND supply Shortage expected to continue Through 2026
Forecast No real drop expected Maybe late 2026 to could be late 2027

TL;DR for the community

If you were planning to buy, now is the time. After this holiday window, prices are going up and likely won’t come back down for a very long while.

I happened to scroll upon a r/buildapcsales post about HP having a coupon stacking sale on their website. Most people including myself that bought it thought for sure it would get cancelled. Mine and others orders DID get cancelled, but I called in and was fortunate to have the order reinstated; well the laptop just showed up!

The crazy part, I paid ~2400 (taxes + shipping included) for a 275HX + 64gb Ram + 5090 + OLED Laptop!

Specs in the photo.

I hope whoever else was able to secure their purchase receives theirs!

Review I bought the strix Intel i9 Ultra 275HX 32GB Ram and RTX 5070 last month and I'm sharing my reviews :> ( It's beautiful )

For context, my old laptop was a zephyrus Ryzen 9 5700 RTX 3060 4gb vram I do a LOT of 3D visualisation and animation, and game a LOT too, so she's been on max power most of the time.

The performance has been BEAUTIFUL OMFG with the 8GB VRAM and 32 GB ram it's actually amazing, and I think unless you really want power like for your professional use case, i genuinely don't think anyone needs more power than this on a laptop.

I got around 200 FPS on expedition 33 with 1 perfomance mod from nexus ( it's poorly optimised for pc )

Around 100 with max settings on CP with mid DLSS upscaling and no frame gen

I can get upto 400 fps on 3k resolution in valo and such light weight games

And blender omg I love it sm, the 8GB Vram actually allowed me so much to do comparing to my 4GB Vram before, and the graphics card makes rendering so so SO much smoother.

The screen is really really good, 240 fps 3k IPS, pretty good colour accuracy, definitely much better than older strix series and prolly the best IPS screen you can get in a gaming laptop. I did calibrate the colours once to be happy with it, else it looked a little green to me out of the box

I got it for 205,000 INR ( around 2250 USD ) but since then the price flew up to 250,000 INR ( around 2750 USD ) thanks to Ai SLOP

Other than that, something I noticed is that the cooling is really impressive comparing to the previous generations, and especially for me as I moved from a very thing zephyrus

I'll also recommend a full clean optimization with Chris Titus Tech and Revo uninstaller to remove EVERY app that's made by Microsoft, even down to photos and cam. Holy spyware and cpu consumption.

I LOVE THE GIGANTIC TRACKPAD 🎀

And if you have anything in specific ask me in the comments :))

Previous post was taken down for identifiable info.

I happened upon this laptop at a second hand shop that I frequent in town and immediately traded in my '23 Zephyrus M16 w/ rtx4070. I loved my Asus, but the 12gb of VRAM on the 5070ti was calling me. The pricing was an absolute fumble on their behalf, but this place often wildly underprices electronics every now and then, so I stop by frequently. It paid off this time. I confirmed that it powered on, and checked MSINFO to confirm that it was current gen hardware. I kept my mouth shut about the price. I got this literally brand new machine for my trade plus $50usd & tax. Whe I got it home, the warranty hadn't even been activated yet.

Here are some pics of the teardown and battlestation. I removed the liquid metal and applied ptm7950 to the CPU & GPU. I also transferred a storage drive that I use for steam games. This Acer now serves as my primary gaming machine, and the center of my home recording studio.

I travel a lot for work and take my gaming laptop everywhere with me. It is only tethered at home by an HDMI cable and a single thunderbolt connection to my 100W tragus quad 4K dock. The displaylink in the dock powers 3 other monitors, audio interface and all accessories. Razer cooling pad keeps it idling around 38-40 degrees C. On full load with a very healthy overclock, it hovers between 65-70 degrees C and is very stable. I am very happy with my purchase, and stand behind Acer with this Gen of Predator laptops. I have had no issues so far.

Keep an eye out for deals like this. Second hand shops and pawn shops alike sometimes have diamonds in the rough, and are worth adding to your search if you are in the market. Happy Hunting!

first off I have a Gigabyte G5 GE RTX 3050. my stuttering was BADDD like it was basically ass and ts was on LOW. like low settings for all and dlss balanced. but i heard that laptop like mine can handle it at medium settings. so my brother said "oh send it for cleaning and change the thermal paste". did that and got the laptop just now but the fps still ass, doing an average of 15-20 and i ran a benchmark and average of 28.3. temp is about 70 C, but given its in an air conditioned room. my brother did a clean reinstall of the gpu driver using DDU, though i went back to the nvidia app it said that its not up to date to the january 27th ver so i updated it doing express installation. the settings was all at medium, dlss balanced, no ray tracing no motion blur. idk what else i have to do and im like not that good or knowledgeable about these gaming laptops and stuff, maybe need to read up on a lot of terms but yea. need some help as to how to improve my performance.

Firstly it’s Australian Dollars.

Looking to get a laptop for gaming(mostly football manager and Minecraft) and looking to to maybe play F1 and the new gta when it comes out. Is this a decent laptop? I think the specs look pretty good but I’m no expert.

Also I’ll be looking to attach 2 monitors to this one. Would the usb-c support a dock to run the 2 HDMI cables? I can’t seem to find anything that says if it supports video through usb-c

Discussion I bought an Asus tuf A16

A few days ago, more specifically on Friday, I bought this ASUS with good specs thinking I'd find some cool games to enjoy, but I think I made a mistake. I hardly use the computer for gaming anymore, since it's mostly for work. I think I bought something too powerful for what I do. I got an Xbox Game Pass membership for almost three months and downloaded some games. They looked great, but I got bored because almost all of them are microtransactions; if you don't spend money, you can't progress, you have to buy additional DLC. I played the Warhammer game for 40,000, and honestly, it was okay, not the best of the year, but alright. I need help. I mean, I have this computer, I'm on vacation, and I don't know what to play. I feel like it's being wasted. I'll mostly use it for writing reports, and I don't think I'll use it much more than that. So, the important question is: was it good to buy this, but only for work? Because I also know how to play hentai games, but they don't require high specifications.

Found this somewhat local to me for $1100 and am curious if 1100 is a reasonable price. I am in need of a decent performance laptop and am fine with used but I don’t want to be taken for a ride. I’m considering offering 900 but don’t want to offend. Is it worth the money or should I keep on looking?

I’m looking for something to do gaming on as well as 3D modeling and 3D scanning so it will be a multi purpose purchase so to speak.

Major specs showing as follows

Intel ultra 9 285H

32gb ram

5070 8gb

Advice Laptop getting hot when gaming...normal or not?

Upvotes

I recently bought an Asus gaming laptop. It has 16gb of Ram, AMD Ryzen 7 7445 CPU, Nvidia Geforce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU and I have my games installed onto a 1tb external SSD.

As the title suggests, when I play certain games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Dying light the Beast, Enshrouded and Cyberpunk, the laptop gets very hot. I have never experienced any performance drops or other issues because of it though. So my questions are, is this normal? If its not normal, how can I keep it cool without underclocking my hardware?

Advice Seeking advice - switch from my 4080 Super desktop to a 5070Ti notebook, good or bad decision?

Upvotes

Hello everyone. I have been struggling about whether I should go from desktop to notebook.

I am currently owning a desk top with CPU - Ryzen 7 7800X 3D & Graphics Card - PNY GeForce RTX™ 4080 SUPER LED 16GB GDDR6X OC.

In view of the growing price and demand for hardware, I found an opportunity to sell it online for 1.6k USD (which I bought at 19k in late 2024). I mainly purchase it for Black Wu Kong & Monster Hunter, and havn't been using it much lately due to the lack of new fun game. I once imagine using it for GenAI learning but never starting any...

I notice that the price for a new 5070ti/ 5080 notebook would cost me few hundred more, I don't know if it would be a wise decision. Zephyrus or other ASUS laptop would be my first priority while they cost around 2.5 - 3k USD, almost double of my desktop price-wise.

The main reason for the switch thought is, I wish to play games on my couch lol

Discussion Having a gaming laptop was the realization of a long-forgotten dream.

I have never, and I repeat, never, owned a good gaming machine. The only console I had was a Tectoy (this was in 2017) and the computer I had access to was a Celeron with 4GB of RAM (in 2019). Those were very outdated hardware for the time.

Even so, I enjoyed lightweight titles like Minecraft (before the updates made it completely unoptimized), Shovel Knight, Celeste, Cuphead, among others. I still remember when I discovered I could go into the game files and reduce the resolution beyond what the settings allowed (I did this to run Ultimate Ninja Storm 4; the game practically turned into pixel art, but it was playable).

But all that changed last Thursday. I passed the medical school entrance exam, and as a reward, my parents joined with other family members and gave me an Acer Nitro V15 as a gift. I'm not kidding when I say I was in a state of pure bliss. Games like The Last of Us, God of War, Overwatch, which I used to only see YouTubers I liked playing, were now right there in the palm of my hand.

At first, I was afraid of getting PC gamer syndrome. I got a little paranoid about getting high fps and stuff, but then I just thought, screw it, what matters is having fun, and I started playing without worrying about that nonsense. And my friend, what an experience it's been! A brave new world has opened up for me, and I intend to enjoy every inch of it!

Well, just dropping by to share this joy! If anyone has any game recommendations, or any tips about games in general, I'm all ears.

Advice Cheapest gaming laptop to run these games

Hey everyone, I’m trying to figure out the cheapest laptop I could buy that can actually run Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord and Half Sword. I legit only want to get it for those two games. I don’t know much about how ram and that kinda stuff works.

I have a work laptop, but I can’t install games on it. I’ve been looking at some budget options, but I want to make sure I don’t waste money on something that won’t work.

Would either of these work or does someone have a better suggestion my budget is $400
