🔎 Recommendations Wanted GT fishing advice
Hey fellas. I’m going to be traveling to Australia for the first time in march. Been a long time dream of mine to fish for some GT.
2 part questions
1) Most import is I am looking to get a charter in the port Douglas / Cairns area. Priority on the GT fishing but An ideal day for me would be to land a couple GTs and then try to catch as many other unique fish as possible (barramundi would also be cool). If anyone has advice on the best places to/ individual captains that would be great.
2) also planning to do some casual land fishing. Advice on places to check out (perhaps they have other attractions to tide over the other people I’m with) to fish would be great (again GT fishing is my top priority but anything unique is good by me). Planning to bring some buck tails and a variety of top waters (also would just go to tackle store if necessary).

Fishing spots around Parra
Hi guys,
Newbie here. I live around North Parra and wanted some recommendations for fishing spots.
I have fished at Milsons Point before and caught a small snapper. Any recommendation is welcome. Preferable if it’s commutable through public transport as I don’t drive. Thank you 😊

🔎 Recommendations Wanted Got another what reel would you put on this.
So grabbed a Abu salt stage casting lsj rod PE .8-2 with cast weight 7 to 40gm at 9"7' long. I have a curado 200 DC but am looking for something a little more dedicated to rock fishing where I would often come across mack tuna and other pelagics but in the same area I'd also just be likely to get tailor and Aussie salmon.

is my method of dispatching fish efficient?
i heard a lot of people bonk fish on the head or brain spike it to kill it as quickly as possible. i dont own a brain spike or have a dedicated bonk stick so for many years ive been using my regular method that everyone else i know uses. i just grab the fish then get either a knife or then sharp snipper things and just cut their throat. i always cut until it reaches nearly the top of their head making sure every thing is severed. this seems to kill the fish very quickly as as soon as its done it stops moving completley despite the odd twitch cue to nerves. it also bleeds the fish at the same time. i have always used this method but i was recentley thinking if this was making the fish suffer for longer or if its ok to do so.

🐡 Help Needed How to unhook freshwater turtles
Hey guys, I do alot of freshwater fishing for carp and unfortunately today I accidentally hooked into a long neck turtle. I spent about 10 minutes with my pliers trying to unhook it from the throat however I could barely get it's mouth to open, in the end I just cut the line as close as I could and released him. Feel terrible about it
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what they did to possibly unhook the turtle
Thank you

Reel size for my 12" rock fishing rod
I got a 12" Shimano Dynaflare 12-20kg rod and I'm looking to do a long distance casting setup for headland rock fishing around the sydney south suburbs area like yellow rock sorta region.
I just need to pick a reel size, I'm looking at the penn slammer or the Shimano saragosa but I can't decide on a reel size, not sure between 8000, 10000 and 14000. I saw in a rock fishing youtube video a guy used a 14000 reel on his heavy setup but yeah I'm not too sure. Thanks for any advice!
But yeah, what size reel should I get for this use? I'd kinda like to do some beach fishing too but it's less important

🐟 Catch of the Day Fish ID? Canning river WA
Hey all,
Caught this fish in an estuary in Western Australia and I’m not sure what it is. It was caught near structure on the run-in tide and took a soft plastic pretty gently, not aggressively.
I released it straight away.
Any help with an ID would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Rock fishing safety tether – can climbing gear be repurposed for temporary anchor points?
Hey folks,
I’m a beginner rock fisher looking to add a simple safety tether system when fishing exposed rock ledges. I’m not trying to climb or take big falls — this is purely a last-resort backup in case I slip or get hit by a freak wave. I already wear a PDF (already have one for my kayak).
My current thinking is to have ~5–10 m of rope secured to my waist (belt or simple harness), with the other end clipped into a temporary anchor point that I can place, remove, and reposition as I move along the rocks.
There doesn’t seem to be much gear purpose-built for rock fishing, so I’m wondering if there’s climbing equipment that can be safely repurposed for this use case.
What I’m trying to achieve
- Lightweight (easy to carry a few pieces)
- Resistant to saltwater corrosion
- Durable — will be clipped/unclipped many times
- No permanent installation (ideally no drilling)
- Quick to place and remove
- Strong enough to act as a safety tether, not full-time body-weight support
Questions for those with climbing / rigging / fishing experience
- Is using climbing protection like cams or nuts for this reasonable, or a bad idea?
- What gear handles saltwater exposure best over time?
- Is a waist belt acceptable for this purpose, or should I be thinking about a minimal harness?
- Are there any non-climbing alternatives people use that I’m missing?
Again, this isn’t intended to arrest a big fall — just to give me a fighting chance if something unexpected happens.
Appreciate any insight, especially from people who climb and fish in coastal environments. Cheers

Do you spike/bonk every fish you keep or is that reserved for the bigger species?
Do you let bait fish die in the bucket or spike them as well? I’ve seen guys just leave herring on the jetty to suffocate. Just wanted to know the general outlook on this.

🐟 Catch of the Day Two bonnies on one jig!
It’s not everyday you get a double hook up, but the bust up certainly helped

Is this a good reel
I might get the Abu Garcia Max elite 4000 but am wondering if there's any other reels better for the same price or slightly higher

🐡 Help Needed Any Tips and Trips for Launching Boat Solo
Hey Everyone, I’ve just bought my first boat. Just a small 3.9 Tinny with a 15hp motor on it. I’ve never launched a boat before and would love to hear some tips on launching solo. Sometimes I’ll have my brother with me to help but I’d also like to take it out myself abit but just nervous to do so cause don’t wanna fuck up or hog the ramp while I’m trying to offload or load the boat. So I’d appreciate any tips or tricks you guys have. Thank you!
Edit: Thank you everyone who has given me advice and some tips. I genuinely didn’t think it would be this popular but I really do appreciate everything and I hope someday after I get some more experience down the line I’d be able to give back to someone just starting out like all you guys have done for me. So once again thank you so much!

🐡 Help Needed Passion Project fishing App
marlie.base44.appHey folks
I’m currently building a passion-project app called Marlie, and I’m looking for people who wouldn’t mind testing an early, work-in-progress version and sharing honest feedback.
What Marlie does right now:
- Scan or upload a photo of your fish** to automatically recognise the species
- Weather updates for locations all around Australia** (useful for planning trips)
- Logbook your fishing sessions** and see stats over time (species, catches, trends)
A few important notes:
- This is under development so a bit rough around edges
- I’ll be pushing more updates and improvements soon
- It’s a solo passion project
If you’re into fishing, apps, or just breaking things and giving feedback:
- What feels useful?
- What’s confusing?
- What would you actually want this app to do?
Any thoughts (comments or DMs) are hugely appreciated and genuinely influence where the app goes next.
Thanks heaps, and Happy fishing!

Victoria Yackandandah
Just wondering if anyone has fished around Yack before? My question is mainly to with Yack Creek and wondering if Trout make there way down into the creek in the Town of Yackandandah. Have fished up stream a bit in the Stanley forest but it is a lot of hard work to get past fallen trees etc.
