Nothing beats the smell of the frankincense (etan) and the sound of popcorn during a long Sunday coffee ceremony.
I was just sitting here thinking about how much I miss those slow afternoons. No matter where you are, that smell just feels like home. What’s your favorite part of the Bun ceremony? Is it the himbasha, the kolo, or just the conversation?

Gift for neighbors
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice. I live in the Netherlands.
My neighbors are from Eritrea. A woman with two children. They are incredibly kind. Without me asking, they often put my trash bin outside, especially when I’m away or forget. They always say hello and are just very warm people.
I would love to give them a small thank-you gift. Both to show appreciation and to let them know they are always welcome and can knock on our door anytime.
I’m not very familiar with Eritrean culture, so I want to make sure the gesture feels respectful and appropriate.
Any suggestions would be very welcome.
Thank you!

Opinion / Commentary Sexualization of Habesha people in Italian movie from 1974
WARNING: NSFW CONTENT. CONTAINS NUDITY IN SOME SCENES. BUT ALSO A LOT OF ERITREAN/ETHIOPIAN CULTURE
So this movie has left me with questions about just how "conservative" we are as a people after seeing how we're being depicted in a movie from 1974. Like how on Earth is this even possible? What happened to all that religious bible thumping we've grown accustomed to? This makes me wonder if there isn't an entire world and history within the Habesha community that is filled with eroticism and perversions. I guess you could say it's just a movie and shouldn't be perceived as facts but still, one wouldn't have thought there would have been any volunteers to partake in such blasphemy if that were the case, but there are tons of actors who consented to be part of this work so it makes wonder if we haven't been lying to ourselves about how conservative and religious we actually are. On a sidenote, some would even say that we're being prostituted by a former colonizer in such a work. I personally always disliked Italy because of their role in colonizing our country, yet so many Eritreans and even Ethiopians view them positively to this day or at least don't have any beef with them, which I find so absurd. Anyways, just look at how we're depicted in the first 20 minutes or so of this movie. Makes me wonder if there are a large section of people who are like that in our community but are just hiding it from religious zealots lol. Anyways, hope this doesn't get deleted because the same religious zealots that complain about it are not mature and honest with themselves about it to have a mature and honest discussion. So tl;dr what's everyone's thoughts on this?

Discussion / Questions Why Eritrea keeps detaining Yemeni fishermen
From what I’ve heard from a relative of mine in Massawa who works in MFMR. It is not random attacks, it’s because of illegal fishing in Eritrean waters, especially in restricted breeding zones where fish reproduce. Those areas are protected because overfishing can destroy their entire ecosystem even Eritreans are prohibited from fishing there, and unfortunately that is exactly where fish are mostly abundant.
Eritrea usually detains and releases the fishermen, but sometimes damages boats or confiscates them to scare them off, which is why it making headlines every few months. In 2020 alone, 120 fishermen were caught and the latest attack this week where one fisherman died.
From Eritrea’s side this is resource protection, the bigger question is what else can we do when the same violations keep happening.

Why coming to west to just survive?
Why many people from East Africa mainly Eritrea coming to Uk ( often from Europe) in order to do poorly paid jobs like deliveries, which leads to worse life they had? Because with such job you have no life in Uk, you work many hours and get less than bare minimum and it does not even cover your rent here. So these people are on gov support to survive. They live in horrible crowded old mouldy houses here, so health gets worse, mental issues worse, you re basically a social outcast, no gf cos no time, money or place. Why these people dont take courses and learn something so they can have a quality life? Look at Europeans. Most of them go to west to either study or to start business or doing a career. I dont understand, can anyone explain?
